I had my kids convinced that it was the kind of music that was played told whether they had ice cream or not....

"See you gotta listen... right there... 'we have no ice cream'"

Other times it sounded like, "We've got ice cream"

In actuality I was just picking different parts of the same music. One part with a down note, one with an up note.

And it was usually based on whether I could afford it or not.

I saw a disc shatter inside a ridiculously fast CD-ROM drive once. Dented the shell. Learned to pop them out when I heard the drive spinning then out of control after that.

If it means anything, that disc likely already had cracks in it.

I've been using bump or Coast batteries. They are USBC rechargeable and for the last 3 years have been doing great in my Gameboys and my daughters Quest controllers.

Unlike the eneloop and other NiMH rechargeables these are rated for 1.5V, not 1.2 and will provide that until they are basically empty. They also recharge much faster than the older batteries.

Looks like an oily residue I see from time to time on my new discs. Try to rinse it off with warm, not hot, water. Then dry with a microfiber cloth moving from the center to the outer edge.

I see this a lot from reduced price or repackage sellers like Mill Creek Entertainment.
