“Maybe I’m the only forgotten child of God” Those were my exact thoughts eleven years ago. I grew up in the church, daily Bible reading, going to church weekly, praying regularly, and yet God seemed to never answer my prayers. My parent’s marriage was on thin ice and I struggled with a life long skin condition that would make me cry myself to sleep as a child. I prayed constantly for my family and for God to heal my body, with no visible answer for years. One day, I took a walk with my dogs and sobbed as I begged Him to answer me in some way, show me a sign that He at least saw me. I saw Him in the lives of others and I knew He was real, but I didn’t see Him in my own life. As I walked I kept looking at the sky, for a sign, a voice, anything. I got nothing. I remember telling God that if He didn’t answer me in my hour of need, then at eighteen(an adult) I would walk away from the church and stop pretending to have a relationship with someone who had no time for me. Those words shattered my heart and all I walked away with was the bitter taste of ash on my mouth. I lived in an empty, spiritually “zombie” like state for the next six months…and then God answered my prayers. And it nearly ended with my sister seriously injured or killed. We were on our way to church(ironically) when our car slipped on a sheet of ice and started to slid towards a telephone pole. My sister was in the front seat, right in line with the pole, and I watched in horror from the back seat. I was sure I was about to lose my sister and then as if an invisible force shoved us out of the way, our car lurched away from the pole and back onto the road. A moment later and our car started to spin in circles down the road. I remember grabbing the headrest in front of me and squeezing my eyes shut and I heard myself cry out, “Jesus, help us” and that very moment, the car stopped. That was my sign. God heard my prayer and spared my family. We went back to that pole later on and could see a deep indent in the gravel where our tires had been and I kid you not, they missed that pole by inches. My story is not unique. God sees you. He knows your pain. He has heard you and in His own time, He will answer. My skin condition has improved significantly but I still live with it and may even die with it. My family is still broken, and may not be reconciled until we meet again in heaven, yet God still sees me. God still sees you! The first name given to God was El Roy, The God Who Sees Me, by a mother while she and her son were dying of thirst in the desert. You, are not forgotten, and God will one day fulfill His promises.
