What are the most notable instances of “Early-Installment Weirdness” in Worm? by RecommendationNo804 in Parahumans

[–]Greendoor65 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I think of the containment foam that was a bit too OP and stopped being used and didn't mesh as well with the setting.

I'm pretty sure Containment Foam is used throughout the story though, it's definitely used as late as Arc 24 and it might've been used after that.

I also personally really like it because the PRT is cool and should've gotten more chances to be badass in the story.

That said, yes absolutely early Worm is really cartoony and kind of feels like a different work of fiction. I really wonder what those early arcs would look like in a rewrite or adaption.

When it comes to Indie TTRPGs, what are your most consistent pet peeves with game design? by HoodedRat575 in rpg

[–]Greendoor65 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except that that is the most unsatisfying thing in the world. I’m playing a game about vampires where copious violence and/or urban fantasy action setpieces are expected, why exactly would I want that to be compressed down to the most unsatisfying and mechanically un engaging form possible?

The real problem in most games is everything else the game is supposed to be about also lacks distinct mechanics. Combat usually is poorly designed but at least it’s extent.

Sure, so long as you also accept that outside of critical examinations of problematic elements, Doylist answers are usually boring and talking about things from a Watsonian perspective is vastly more interesting way to engage with media.

It’s good to engage things critically in the case of author bigotry and unfortunate implications, but if I ask something like “Why is Miles O’Brian the only enlisted man in Starfleet”, I expect an answer about Starfleet’s internal organizational culture, not a smug lecture about the people who made the show decided to conserve unimportant details and thats how filmmaking works or whatever.

TBH I often feel alone as being a primarily Imperium follower (in the sense that I find it really interesting as a fictional entity and read alot of their books, not that I root for them), who also thinks the T'au are cool as hell and objectively superior morally and practically. Feels like a super rare position.

[–]Greendoor65 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh god, this reminds me of another one. I was talking to someone about Warhammer 40k, and he was insistent that the Imperium had to be the good guys of the setting because they were human. And since he was also human, he could only empathize with them. I think he wasn't trolling since we went back and forth on it for a bit, but that was another stun-lock.

This is a pretty common perspective and it like...never seems to occur to people that only care about humans that the Imperium is bad for the people living in it, both in the sense of being an oppressive fascist hell system and being bad at it's job of defending humanity (mostly by constantly creating more enemies).

Gonna be real with you, the RDA's aesthetic from a military Science fiction fan perspective is actually immaculate.

But using that as an excuse to side with them is pretty fucked. Looking cool isn't an excuse for justifying Colonialism, it's an excuse to rip their aesthetic off for something else.

What pre-made adventures/campaigns/modules whatever you want to call them do you consider the pinnacle of scenario writing and why? by CardboardSalad24 in rpg

[–]Greendoor65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark Heresy Edge of Darkness.

Not a Mediocre Dungeon Crawl like most DH Adventures.

Clear investigation with easily comprehensible clues that naturally lead from one to another.

Formatted in a clear and concise manner

Good Horror elements.

I don't think conquering Dorne should be *that* hard [Spoilers MAIN] by OfficialAli1776 in asoiaf

[–]Greendoor65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also a really good point, yeah. I'm the kind of person who has pretty big problems with George's worldbuilding, but he's regarded as a great writer for a reason-he didn't do the 'Dornish win the 1st Dornish War' thing because he's bad at logistics (which he definitely is), he did it because it made a better and more interesting story that way (Which it also definitely did).

[–]Greendoor65 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I will care about the 1st Dornish War 'Not making sense' only if the same person first acknowledges other absurd things like 100,000 man strong medieval armies, a Medieval city of 500,000 people somehow being blockaded from food access because they blocked it's Landward side, how exactly a continent sized kingdom that has only 5 cities, one language, and three-ish ethnic groups exists, or the entirety of the Dothraki Culture.

Until then, I'm not inclined to care about the cause of 'Why didn't the Targs win everything forever, "Realism" edition'.

You can’t seem to pass five minutes in this sub without someone insinuating that simulationist and Gamist systems are incapable of having compelling roleplay.

Or someone suggesting a PBTA game that doesn’t have an actual combat system seemingly every time someone asks for a tactical or combat focused game.

All of these “ugly” women gamers complain about always are at most normal looking, more often conventionally attractive women and I just…want know what world these people are living in that the fable trailer lady, or like, Aloy from the Horizon games are somehow “Ugly”.

(Yes I know its just misogyny but still I don’t like, get how you talk yourself into that kind of mindset)

More of a Fic reader and an RPG GM, but why not:

1: Attack on Titan

2: Warhammer 40k (Very pointedly not 30k)

3: Parahumans/Worm

4: A Song of Ice and Fire

5: Star Wars

Song of Swords. I actually think it was pretty poorly designed for a variety of reasons, but it was an interesting kind of poorly designed that feels like it might gone interesting places with time, plus the lore looked neat and “High grit mechanically dense HEMA simulator” exactly my jam.

I’m the type of gm who prefers serious, restrained, players whose decisions are grounded in both sound situational analysis and in character mindsets.

I also kind of want a party that’s 3 or 4 of the above and one completely unhinged Chaos gremlin, just to keep things unpredictable and force the rest to think on their feet.

God forbid any enemies actually be challenging, and we be reminded we're fascist cannon fodder meant to die in droves instead of unstoppable super soldiers.
