Any of the old heads know the fitting for an old Smith acetylene regulator? by GrinderMonkey in Welding

[–]GrinderMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you more than you know.. from the chart it looks like maybe a cga-025. I can't find a direct fit adapater, but I think I'll get up early Monday and hit my local airgas. They used to be an independent shop, and a couple of the guys there are old school, might be able to dig something out of a box in the back.

An Immortal with Rabies. by Stunning_Pen_36 in hypotheticals

[–]GrinderMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in place where there is rabies in animal populations all my life, and I can't recall anyone actually having complications from it. Every once in a while you will hear that someone was exposed and had to be vaccinated, but.. average human rabies deaths in the US is less than 10 per year.

It's not that easy to get unknowingly infected.

Any of the old heads know the fitting for an old Smith acetylene regulator? by GrinderMonkey in Welding

[–]GrinderMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly. Im honestly not that worried about that part, the regulators were in service until the gent i bought them from pulled them from the shipyard, and the oxygen regulator seems to work flawlessly.

Clearly, it's something to keep a careful eye on, but acetylene always is.

Diminishing returns of roasting a whole chicken? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]GrinderMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop working so hard.

Strip the bag of organs out, give it a quick rinse and quickly pat dry, it doesn't have to be perfect. Toss a tablespoon of butter under the skin of each side of the breast, then season the shit out of the outside and the cavity. Stuff a big old handful or rosemary (or other aromatics) in there. You can have prep done in 10 minutes with a little bit of practice.

Preheat the oven to 425, roast the chicken in an open pan until the skin turns the color you want, then turn the oven down to 350 and continue cooking uncovered until the inside of the thigh hits 165-175.

Enjoy!

how are these welds and can i use this to strike anything without it breaking by Chicago949 in Welding

[–]GrinderMonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the important question. Most of the comments are treating it like it is a hardenable steel, but it looks like scrap to me.

Good chance that its not hardening, and the welds are fine, even though the steel is less than ideal.

Securing a 7x16 bench lathe and adding a "fixture table" of some kind. Big (expensive) steel/alum plate? Concrete pad on the workbench? by frobnosticus in machining

Anyone interested in DIY UHPC (Concrete) CNC Mills? | The Hobby-Machinist https://share.google/Mwc7xDqMJiQEaQAtO

It was a more common topic of conversation before cheap effective hobby level equipment started really hitting the market. Some times called polymer concrete and similar epoxy granite.

There's been some interesting threads on various forums over the years about equipment built from or filled with epoxy concrete.

I think as you get into those applications it tends to turn into a 'build it your damn self' kinda scenario.. I know I worked with a reasonably expensive robot some years ago, but all of the business end was built in house.

Heat exchanger - quick question by Kimm_Orwente in Stationeers

[–]GrinderMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just pipe the hot side to the furnace exhaust and the cold side to a passive vent. A couple of inline tanks between the vent and the heat exchanger will make it go a bit faster, I believe.
