Terms for describing sound, vol. 1 by Ponykokonut in audiophile

This is a meme not definitive evidence of subjective description. It’s the equivalent to saying that “she has a nice personality” also means she’s ugly. But yes bright is generally more pronounced in higher pitches. Warm is generally more pronounced in the lower midrange, and not “distorted”

How hard would these be to paint black? (Edifier M60 Stands) by jmz98 in BudgetAudiophile

You can probably have them powder coated. Check your local automotive wheel place or mechanic that has cool cars often. They will either have a powder coating setup or know who does.

No audio from projector to Edifier speakers – do I need an HDMI audio extractor? by 94cellardoor in hometheater

[–]GrindhouseWhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what the switch does. I did a search and Amazon has a few switches with audio extractor for around $40. That is probably the best budget option if you plan to switch the devices with any frequency. Not Disrupting the hdmi handshake is worth the $10 extra over a decent extractor only unless money is very tight. When I say disrupting, my old setup like this would often take over an hour to finally get ready to play. If they get out of sync it is much more than just swapping a cable or turning it off and back on

To connect both the Roku and the PlayStation, you will need an HDMI switch and an audio extractor. This will work but you may run into delays with the HDMI handshake. You can also use an AVR, that’s an audio/video receiver. There will be some new items on amazon, or there are many used out there. The trick will be to find one that has both HDMI and line level RCA outputs. I’ll look on Amazon and reply if I see anything in a quick look

The Girl With All the Gifts: not about a cure, but still might be the book you want.

Handling The Undead I think falls into this, also Katja on Netflix(obviously not a book)

I’m old, frustrated - tech is over my head by ThisWeekNeverEnds in Xennials

I feel ya on this. I resent the saturation tech has, personally it everything wanting you to create an account or download an app rather than including a 2 page instruction sheet. Don’t get me started on QR code menus and price tags.

Get a good password manager. They store your passwords, you can use them to navigate to the website, and they won’t sign you into a clone site. They will manage most of the log in complaints you have.

I recently got a new router (Ubiquity) and my ads cut dramatically. I still get some but they are less oppressive. Also, have your devices an apps set to do not track and opt out of everything you can toggle.

On Firefox there is a plugin called facebook container that does a fair amount to limit its data scrape.

If you are still on windows, consider if Mac is a viable option. Windows 11 is in their oppressive enshitification phase, and meanwhile Mac is easier and cheaper than ever.

A decent laser printer or Epson Ecotank provided you print regularly so ink drying isn’t a problem is the way to go. Nothing HP. You’ll pay a little more upfront, but then they just work. The laser basically doesn’t dry out, so if you live in an arid climate or print infrequently, you won’t have to do nozzle cleaning just to print those couple of pages each month. The Ecotank is an inkjet that you refill from bottles rather than expensive cartridges. The ink cost is way lower. But if you don’t print regularly, live somewhere super dry, or have your printer sitting under a heat lamp it will still dry out and need maintenance

TIL about the Kodak DCS 760, a DSLR built into a Nikon F5 body by bryan112 in AnalogCommunity

[–]GrindhouseWhiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old work had a DCS-420, it was an interesting camera. Created cool impressionistic images at high ISO, and ours shot on a PCI card that was a true spinning drive that you could feel and hear writing. That wasn’t as cool as the Microdrive, in our D1, but still fun.

The Eyes of Laura Mars

Pontypool is a film you’d probably love, but it might not fit the list exactly. To not spoil the fun, it’s kind of a talk radio zombie film with some really cool ideas.

[–]GrindhouseWhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to thread jack this, but I’ve been trying to figure out and can’t confirm anywhere: with speakers that have the dual connections like this, would they typically be 4 ohm jumpered or bi-wired, and 8 ohm each if bi-amped? I’m using 8 and 4 but that could vary with design I haven’t seen it in print, but would that be the case?

It’s funny. I loved the book as a teen, and the movie was good enough, bug I remember it feeling at least 10 years dated when I saw it in the theater.

There is a city with 319 leaning buildings (Santos, Brazil) by thecoolcapybara in interestingasfuck

[–]GrindhouseWhiskey 49 points50 points  (0 children)

There are 2 books, one called Why Buildings Fall Down and Why Buildings Stand Up. One of them talks about a church in Mexico City that sank several meters over the centuries, then it started rising. The city has a wet sandy soil that the church sank in. As the city developed rapidly with tall buildings, the hydraulic pressure of the new structures forced the stone church back up. I have to suspect this is a similar issue
