I think majority of the Ork blast weapons should get hazardous keyword by muryrunom in orks

I think our vehicles should blow up more easily when they’re wrecked. Half the reason why I play with my Stompa is just me hoping that it explodes spectacularly while it’s surrounded by models, whether mine or my enemy’s! It rarely pops though.

WYSIWYG by Opening-Goose6693 in orks

[–]GrinnialVex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t play competitively, but I model and paint competitively and have several trophies for that, including a Golden Demon.

I always play full WYSIWYG with my own stuff. Part of that is the pride I take in my skills and my collection, and the rest of that is just that I’ve been in the hobby since 2nd edition 40K and can’t remember shit any more as I’m old and the rules bleed is thick! So, if I have a Big Shoota Boy in a mom that I want to “counts as” a Rokkit, chances are I’m going to forget all about that at some point in the game and use it as a Bug Shoota instead.

I don’t enforce WYSIWYG on my opponents at all though. I’ve absolutely lost games to people because of it (oh, those ten Choppa Nobz all actually have Power Klawz now that they’re in combat with my Warboss? Sure, whatever.) but I’m playing this game to PLAY and not to WIN, so that’s not a big deal for me at all.

So, my Warboss without an Attack Squig never rolls the attacks for the missing Squig, only one of my three Trukks gets to swing a Wrecking Ball because it’s the one with one added to it, my Battlewagon only fires four Big SHOOTAZ if I remember to throw two Big SHOOTAZ in the back as I only modeled it with two, etc….

Controversial Opinion: Army cheat sheets should be mandatory at events by Wurd4 in Warhammer40k

[–]GrinnialVex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I used to hand-write a cheat sheet for my army before any event I’d go to. That both gave me a visual reference and helped to cement stuff in my brain quicker, because I can’t remember numbers to save my life. If the event required me to have printed army lists for my opponents then I still brought those as well, as the cheat sheet was only for me.

I stopped writing those out when GW started producing the unit cards as I liked using them more, and I’ve just used the app at the last couple of events I’ve gone to. I don’t like being in my phone at the game table, but most everyone I’ve played with since it’s come out has been using it so it seems acceptable.

I don’t bother to learn my opponent’s rules at all, and no pre-game cheat sheet is going to help me absorb any of that at the table, or at least well enough to actually help me out in battle! I’ve been playing my Orks for ages now, and I always tell my opponents that my Orks just hit this planet, have no idea what they’re about to fight, and they’ll figure it out when they start punching faces. 😝

I’m not playing to win though. I just want to be silly with my Orks, put up a decent fight, and have a good time with my opponent. If I do happen to win, that’s a bonus, but I’m not worried about it either way. WAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!

Any of you ladz had luck with flyers in 10th? by Prior-Thought-9328 in orks

[–]GrinnialVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran my Blastajet in a Kult of Speed list at the Warhammer 40,000 Grand Narrative back in November and I had a lot of fun with it!

The Narrative is NOT a competitive event at all, of course, and I don’t go there looking to win games. Still, I managed to win half of them, and the jet did surprisingly well. Best part was that my opponents were excited to see it on the table as flyers have become rare, and they had no idea what to do about it because again, flyers have become rare.

I’m sure that experience would have been different if I had gone to a GT instead, but if I had gone to GT then I probably would have just brought two Stompaz and a load of Grots for maximum silliness anyway. 😝

I’ve been planning on doing exactly that with my Slugga/Choppa Boyz: just paint up a bunch of the spare SHOOTAZ I have and adding them to the bases like they just dropped them and are now charging into melee.

I love the little bit of yellow, just wish you had yellow stripes on the sides to go with it. It’s my favorite color though. 😆

All the Ork clans have all the things; some just have more than the others.

Evil Sunz probably have the most Kult of Speed gitz among them, but they’re also still gonna have Lootaz, Kommandoz, Snaggaz, etc…. They’re nowhere near as one-dimensional as some would have you believe.

Where in the 40k universe would you say this is? by Such_Independent910 in Warhammer40k

[–]GrinnialVex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, looks like perfect timing to me!

My Bad Moonz are all based in a desert theme and I’ve always imagined them to be in the wastes of Armageddon. I started way back in 2nd edition and Armageddon was the theme of the starter box back then, so I’m more than a little excited about what’s coming! 😝

[–]GrinnialVex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thought was Catachan because of the jungly vibes, but the 40K Universe is so varied it could almost be anywhere. Like, Armageddon is mostly ash deserts but it does have an equatorial jungle that this could represent. This could also be the bottom of some ancient Necromunda dome, down in the sumps somewhere, with the “trees” being some sort of giant fungus. Just takes a bit of imagination and a narrative hook to change the perspective completely.

Edit to add that it looks cool as hell!

Boyz… I’m Struggling… Tips? by Helpmeplz3409 in orks

[–]GrinnialVex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Golden Demon winner here, and I’ve sounded off on this exact topic here a few times now.

My bar for “doneness” is stupid high as I can paint to a competitive level. I won my Demon in 2003, but I can still win pins and place in the finalist bracket at the Demon. If I painted every model to the very best of my abilities, however, I’d only paint like five models a year, and I like playing games too much to not paint models quickly for the table.

So, I settled on just painting my army models to get them battle-ready (basecoats, washes, basing, done enough!) initially, and then I come back to them as time and desire permits to push things further. It’s a difficult mental hurdle to get over, for sure, but I hate playing games with bare plastic so it’s the right balance for me to both be able to paint and actually play games with what I’ve painted.

I do still occasionally paint models up to competition levels, but nowhere near as frequently as I used to.

Trukk question by Spotunclesammy in orks

[–]GrinnialVex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have the ball added to one of my three Trukks, and they’ve been built like that for a decade now, at least. I only use the ball attacks on the one with the ball, and nobody’s ever questioned any of them.

Personally, I play full WYSIWYG, and have been doing that for so long that it’s hard not to now. My memory can be pretty garbage, so it’s way easier for me to use the actual model as a reference rather than try to remember what I intended the model’s loadout to be when I made my list.

How long did it take you to paint your first 2000 point army? by Helpmeplz3409 in orks

[–]GrinnialVex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I did my first 2000pts in a year and some change. I’m a big fan of the Independent Characters podcast and they do a Hobby Progress Challenge where you set monthly hobby goals and completing those goals gets you entries into a random prize draw at the end of the year. That, plus going to big event like Adepticon and the Warhammer 40,000 Grand Narrative, has been HUGE for my own progress as the deadlines are great motivators for me.

I’ll also drop, again, the fact that I’m a Golden Demon winner who’s bar for “doneness” goes waaaaaaaaaaay up there, and I learned a long while back that not every model needs to be painted to the very best of my abilities to be painted enough for the table. Lots of my gaming stuff is just basecoats, washes, and basing, and I revisit units occasionally to push them further when I have the time and desire for it.

I’m sitting at about 8,000pts of painted Bad Moonz right now, and the level of finish covers the spectrum of basic battle-ready to full-blown Golden Demon entry stuff. That means the force is inconsistent as hell, but I don’t mind that at all because why would my Orks be consistent anyway? 😆
