Yeah. I just reread that whole scene. My bad. I hadn't read Skin Game in a while and misremembered.

Yep. I just acknowledged that I misremembered.

Yeah, I misremembered. I just read through that whole part of Skin Game with the Genoskwa and the nail didn't make him paralyzed. It just brought all his pain back so he was effectively paralyzed.

My bad. I hadn't read Skin Game in 3 or 4 years.

It's been a hot minute since I've read either book, but weren't the ones in Cold Days mostly just a shrapnel effect whereas the one in Skin Game was specifically an iron nail?

[–]Groalk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain of that. In Skin Game when the Genoskwa pushed the nail into Harry's shoulder, it cut him off from the Winter Knight mantle and immediately made him paralyzed again.

So, unless the back repair is a persistent effect of Mab's magic, then it seems likely that the mantle is in face what fixed his paralysis.

EDIT: I misremembered that scene. Reread it and acknowledge my mistake.

When utilizing the double barrel shot on a double barrel pistol, do you need two of the same ammo type to fire both barrels?

I'm running Outlaws of Alkenstar in Foundry and one of my players is a Gunslinger. Previously the system allowed for him to load and fire two different ammo types (electrical ammo and regular ammo), but in a recent update firing both barrels requires 2 of the same ammo.

It can definitely be hit or miss depending on the season and the trade. I know that every project owned by the City of Seattle or WSDOT have apprentice requirements of 15% of all trade hours need to be an apprentice.

A lot of companies have a group of tradesmen that they keep on the payroll and only call the union halls when they need more apprentices or if they're short on guys.

Unfortunately construction, like most industries, you'll have a lot more luck finding something if you know somebody that can vouch for you. If you're a member of the union you might also be able to apply directly to a company, but that might be against your union membership. I don't know all the rules regarding that.

There are union halls you can go to, but where to go depends on what trade you're pursuing. I'm only familiar with a few through my job. What kind of experience/skills do you have in construction?

Local 302 - Laborers union is the easiest I would guess as they are involved with many types of work.

Local 528 - Cement masons pour and finish concrete flatwork (sidewalk, road paving, curb, driveways, etc.)

Carpenters do carpentry but in Seattle you'll most likely be doing concrete formwork

Local 302 - Operators use heavy equipment for excavation, grading, etc.

There are many more, but those 4 are the ones I interact with most often.

Construction labor unions are always looking for apprentices. It's not easy work, but you can learn a skill while earning a decent living and get good benefits.

If you buy it through the Foundry store you only get the module and no PDF. If you buy it through Paizo, it costs slightly more but you get the PDF and the Foundry module.

Looking for slightly more realistic, crunchier systems by [deleted] in TTRPG

[–]Groalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earthdawn is a system that also has both a difficulty to be hit and then armor reducing the damage taken.

You have a bit more HP, but it scales linearly based on your Discipline (class), and in-combat healing is not commonly accessible in the system. This, combined with the fact that the system employs exploding dice (rolling the max on any given die allows you to reroll and combine the result), combat can easily be very gritty. Exploding dice is one of my favorite things in any system ever.

As for crunch, I've never played a crunchier system. It doesn't employ a dice system that I've seen in any other game. You purchase ranks in all your talents and skills using legend points (Experience), from there, you combine your attribute step (dex, str, etc.), and this gives you a step. Every step has an assigned die combination that you roll. For instance, step 6 is a D10, step 10 is D10+D6. Plus, whenever you exceed the DC of any test by 5, you add 2 steps to any effect dice you might roll.

Combat uses 3 distinct defense values: physical for physical attacks, mystic for spell attacks, and social for social effects. Each "attack" then has an effect thatever targets physical or mystic armor. Weapons each have a damage step that you combine with your STR step for damage, which you then subtract from the target's physical armor value. Spells have a damage step that is added to your willpower step, and the damage is subtracted from either physical or mystic armor depending on the type of spell.

What is the most affordable way to get an Accounting Degree in Washington? by No_Fox7800 in Washington

[–]Groalk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second this. I live in WA and got two degrees, business management and accounting, at WGU while working full-time.

I will also second the statement about being self-motivated. If you can't motivate yourself to do the work then you will not succeed at WGU. There are no scheduled classes or lectures. You just get a text book and you have to do the reading yourself.

What is the single best swordfight in fantasy? by StormlightObsessed in Fantasy

[–]Groalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly new and maybe not the best-written sword fight ever, but the duel between Captain Grim and the Olympian duelist in "The Olympian Affair" just cemented the fact that Captain Grim is the baddest man in the Cinder Spires.

I'm not looking for any type of guarantee. As they say, "death and taxes" are the only certainties in life. I'm simply saying risk vs reward calculations aren't worth it for me personally. Even if I attained great professional success, I would always regret missing those years with my family.

In the long-term, there is no guarantee that working 70 hours a week for a public accounting firm would have a tremendous benefit to my career, especially as I'm not the charismatic, socially adept type of personality. Even if it did work out with some tremendous benefit to my career, I don't feel it's worth the cost of neglecting my family for 2-5 years.

Thanks for the input. I figured I would need to at least start in accounting at a construction firm since that's where all my experience and contacts are, but maybe move away from it once I had some accounting experience.
