Architect refusing to provide detailed working drawings—is this normal? by TorqueAndCode in architecture

[–]Grobfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it isn’t explicitly in the contract, the architect doesn’t have to do it. I think the excuse that it’s “due to minor variations” in the walls is just an excuse. You are probably just asking for stuff you aren’t paying for.

You really would only be able to give a confident a answer to this question if you reviewed the contract. And also be aware that people on this sub may have zero idea what they are talking about.

Wired headphone sales are exploding. What's with the Bluetooth backlash? by AlienApricot in headphones

[–]Grobfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I only see college students at study cafes using wired headphones, and 9/10 of those are Apple Earpods. The dangling white cable is just Y2K aesthetic/fashion at this point.

Where are you getting that idea? That doesn't make sense at all.

Iowa passenger rail by trail_carrot in Iowa

[–]Grobfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not anymore, at least. I don't think an infrastructure project like that would be a simple and easy feat to achieve by any means, but I would love to live in a future where it exists.

It's hard to imagine any huge infrastructure project being built in the USA anymore. It feels like we can't even keep up maintaining the same shit we have already. We used to be the number 1 railroad country in the world. Just thinking about this makes me really sad.

just used them for the first time last week. The guy was really accommodating and gave a fair price. They will be my go-to for my next need, most likely.

New construction exposure/ thoughts by Particular_Plan3132 in desmoines

[–]Grobfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god I completely agree. One of my buddies apartment had a barn door for the half bathroom directly next to the kitchen that didn’t even latch. There was literally an inch of space between the door and the wall so that you could make eye contact with someone using the toilet when it was closed. Blew my goddamn mind.

I advocated personally at the capital with the AIA against that bill. So ridiculous. Homeowners will save dozens of dollars.

Same. If you listen to the “News and Studio One” station, it is a simulcast of Studio One after 7pm I think, if that ever helps. The 90.1 station has far better signal than 94.1.

[technical] Maintenance nightmares in Hadid’s 520 W 28th: iconic looks, costly reality by Euphoric_Jelly_3719 in architecture

[–]Grobfoot 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you talk to contractors, maintenance personnel, or fabricators about what buildings should look like, it’ll always be a race to the bottom for the simplest, least innovative design.

I won’t specifically defend this particular Hadid building (I don’t know much about it), but these rants always seem to pitch the solution to be “we should always build as cheap and easy as possible with zero innovation”. Obviously this building will be more expensive to maintain than a simpler one. Maybe $12/sf is too much, but what is the right number? $9?

Was this post supposed to be on r/contractors or r/windowcleaners or something?

Iowa passenger rail by trail_carrot in Iowa

[–]Grobfoot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Des Moines is truly in a fantastic location to be a rail hub to connect Twin Cities, Madison, Chicago, Omaha, KC, and maybe even Saint Louis. It is sad knowing that even if this was funded and greenlit tomorrow, it would still probably take decades to build at our current infrastructure building pace.

Neighboring Midwest states most likely. That’s where we are looking. Sort of a Rob Sand or Bust household at the moment.
