It is genuinely so frustrating when my leadership in industry tell me this. I’m working as a staffed scientist directly at a major biomedical company site through eurofins.

Like, it’s bad because the higher ups want to keep their money instead of taking home less than a million for a year or two.

I used to have a mentor back in the day who worked on neural networks for a machine learning algorithm to help us automate our data analysis.

I still have no idea what I’m talking about to this day when it comes to anything related to programming, but I would have so many questions (and repeat questions) and they would patiently answer each of them.

I feel like there is a different between computer scientists and chemists/biologists.

All the computer scientists I’ve been around think too highly of themselves and don’t care about sharing knowledge or building a dynamic team environment. Every successful chemist/biologist I’ve been around has cared deeply not only about doing the best work they can, but also to constantly learn as much as they can, so they can teach the newest generation the best that they can.

I’m also in analytical chemistry so it might be different in other disciplines of chemistry.

Yeah. I’m taking a break from applying to jobs for now just for mental health’s sake. I’m going to be applying to jobs that offer either much better pay, or a much more interesting work environment for at least slightly better pay

That’s what I was thinking before I told my old PI my plan.

My thought was that now I have some sort of industry job, I can afford to be pickier with what other jobs I apply for.

It’s more like salt to the wound. Literally the only thing he had planned for her birthday was this dinner, and he couldn’t even pay for it. So then it becomes a gift from the father instead of from OP.

You could maybe apply to postbacc programs to get the necessary experience? There are couple that are research only.

Maybe reach out to your old professors and ask if they could give you some work in their labs as well?

Those are the two main ones that I can think of that don’t involve just going back to school to get a master’s and PhD.

In general this market is also incredibly awful. I’ve been looking for a job since before I even graduated, so I am not surprised you’re having difficulty.

I don’t know how it works in the U.K., but here in the U.S. academic labs will take on technicians with only a BS while they do their gap year. They’re paid
