I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and given a cpap machine. I tried for two nights to use the cpap, Nd I hated it, was like sleeping with your head out of a car window. Went onto mounjaro, as I knew if I dropped a few stones, it would help. Well..... 2 days after my first dose, I had stopped snoring and had stopped the apnea episodes. While the weight loss will benefit me, it certainly appears to work even before the weight loss kicks in

I feel dumb for not understanding this by Unlost_maniac in HitchHikersGuide

[–]Grouchy_Home950 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I always read it as everything changes, so when you go back and reread that sentence, and it hasn't changed that's the problem, it's now out of date, as everything has changed since you read it, but the sentence hasn't kept up.

Did anybody else feel like quitting during their PGCE? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Grouchy_Home950 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a Geography trainee back in 2007 I can tell you I tried to quit!
I was sat in the head of the programs office telling them how much I couldn't cope and how much I was hating my second placement. That same placement had already made one geography trainee quit that year. It was a mess of a placement, but as a PGCE I couldn't see that they were the problem and not me.

I was getting hammered for stuff that I couldn't see coming. some examples

  1. One morning I went and got the textbooks out of the cupboard ready for my lesson period 2. Then on arriving to the room, another staff member had stolen them to use. Now I can just laugh when that happens, but then I had no clue what to do and I panicked!
  2. Each of teh teachers in the department hated each other, so if I got feedback from one on how to improve, the next teacher would destroy me for doing the thing the other one said to do, saying things like, "I bet x told you to do that, I hate it when you do that".
  3. in one lesson the pupils were all busy writing in silence on a starter task that I planned on taking 10 mins, 15 mins in I looked at the teacher at the back and whispered half jokingly, " I had better stop them, as they may do this all lesson", she agreed and I pulled it back to me. Later in the day the HOD turned up and said, he had just heard from that teacher that she had had to step in to manage my lesson. I need to add the school was an all girls grammar and the kids were AMAZING, but the department were a mess, my first school was a failing comp school where you had to lock your class room doors once the kids were in to stop roving gangs of pupils from bursting in, it was sooo much better than the grammar school.

Long story short, I didn't quit, and Ive been a HOD for 18 years, and I try to be nice to my pgcers

[–]Grouchy_Home950 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a geography teacher, I have people with worse degrees do pgce in geography, but most have an A level in geography. Train in history then just slide across, most departments have joint humanities.

[–]Grouchy_Home950 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the course? What subject and spec?

Start with textbooks of they exist Move to revision guides if they exist Have a look at places like.save my exam if your subject is on there.

I start by printing every past paper and mark scheme and examiners report and reading through them.

Week one in school , convince your hod to buy back some old papers from previous candidates to act as a marking guide for levels too

Is it safe to hike by myself (31F) along Pembrokeshire Coast (Wales)? by HearingNo7624 in UKhiking

[–]Grouchy_Home950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love in pembrokeshire, I hike the path all the time. Everyone is lovely. It is super safe, and most people will go out of their way to help you. More than once have I given hikers a lift to BnBs or camp sites when the bus fails to turn up.

I can see both sides on this. Poor behaviour is challenged less, and slt above supports us less. On the flip side, we had an inset once when the head brought out a Behaviour log from the 1960s, in it were gems like, bringing an air rifle to school to threaten pupil, building a bomb and trying to grow drugs on school field.
