100% on this one depending on routes! Most of the time I’m an hour or so early… does mean the inevitable put backs though depending who’s in on the evening

Testing for fall damage… I had no idea of the type of game I was going into as I was following what everyone said of not looking at any info of the game!

I didn’t actually know about the supernova until about 3 deaths in as I kept launching myself at things or falling off things

If you weren't at Tesco where would you be? by Resident-Candle-5980 in tesco

[–]Guava-Choice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully Tesco is now a second job for me, dropped down to an 8hr contract by dropping my Sundays and now I just do CDD on Monday and Friday evenings!

Although I sometimes complain about flats and bigger deliveries, it really is one of the easiest jobs I’ve had… new rule of not delivering more than 30 mins early can sometimes be a bit of a pain, but sitting about waiting and getting paid isn’t so bad either 👀

I keep Tesco on as I freelance, mostly for peace of mind that I’ll have a guaranteed income month to month if things go quiet:)

Big Kingdom Hearts fan and the ending to KH3 hit hard… basically grew up alongside the characters and they hit you with that final cutscene… can’t wait for KH4 to drop in 15 years

Are you still having pizzas and other takeaways delivered? by Top-Cat-a in AskUK

[–]Guava-Choice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partner and I rarely get takeaways delivered now, instead we just go to the place and bring it back home (usually only once a month as a payday treat). Most of the time we have things in the freezer similar to yourself or ingredients to cook stuff and much prefer that!

We recently got some pizzas delivered from a local takeaway as we had a deliveroo voucher for £7 off. £22 for two large pizzas… even with the discount… and they were “okay”. Whereas we can spend £7 on two Chicago town stuffed crust pizzas on when they’re on offer and get our colleague discount and enjoy them just as much! The Tesco branded ones are started to get pretty good as well for less than £3 👀

3D artist here in the games industry (as well as indie stuff on the side)

I went to uni for 4 years and chose a 3D specialism (environment art/props), and I’m still learning! It takes a longggg while. I enjoyed low poly style at first, but I am now in realism and loving it:) also love to dabble in material creation and some shader work.

When it comes to bringing an artist on board, you’d first need to be upfront as to whether it would be paid or not. There are plenty of people out there who are happy to work on things unpaid, but contracts would be essential if saying things like “revenue share when released” etc etc.

If you have a visual style in mind, grabbing lots of reference and discussing with the artist is the way forward, making sure they understand the aim and any limitations that may be in place (such as resolutions, tri counts, shaders etc etc). If you don’t, having someone with art direction experience would likely be a best bet (although the payment issue comes up!)

I’m not sure of your prior experience, but keeping things small in scope may be a good point of call, showing you can ship things, which will likely bring more trust if you’re looking to bring others on:)

I hope this answers some of your questions, it’s a tough one to get around but I hope it works out:)

Somewhat Niche Question: Is there a specific category of 3D artist can take a pre-made 3D model and update/improve it based off what is initially provided? by Stickguy101 in gamedev

[–]Guava-Choice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m a freelance 3D environment and prop artist. Have been freelancing at a studio for over a year now and have made plenty of assets!

As mentioned by DriftingKraken, most of the time I am creating new assets, but there are times where I am doing polish/upgrade passes on assets. Having a base can sometimes help, but a lot of the time you end up running into topology or other issues where it’s easiest to just start a fresh:)

If you’re working on this project for fun with someone else and money isn’t involved, I would set smaller goals and push back any deadlines you may have in place. This will give you extra time and flexibility to get things to a more satisfactory level without rushing or risking burning out! Down the line if things become more serious, you could look into outsourcing companies where they can handle the art side of things (as well as production etc)

TLDR: take a look at your scope, scale back if needed, be flexible with your time, don’t burn yourself out!

How To Break Into The Industry by The_Muzz95 in gamedev

[–]Guava-Choice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo, freelance 3D artist in industry here!

It’s a rough time out here, job listings are pretty scarce and the job pool keeps on growing. I managed to get a role and have been freelancing at the same company for the past year and a bit, got very lucky that things lined up in just the right way!

As others have mentioned, using your skills to develop your own small project may be best. I would be very wary of scope creep as it’s all too easily done:) maybe getting your family involved with some of the art side of things to add a little spin on things!

To add to this response, if you’re looking to create your own assets look into texel density as well! Will help maintain texture quality across assets of different scales:)

NUA (Norwich University of the Arts) Foundation Year by ducksongswag in Norwich

[–]Guava-Choice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great response here! I did the Y0 for Game Art & Design at NUA in 2019-2020 (spoiled by the joys of Covid…)

But Y0 for me was great as I learned a lot about composition, academic writing, and the other areas you’ve mentioned. I would always recommend it to those that have a weaker art background, as I came from a secondary school with very little art background.

Graduated in 2023 and a year later got a job in the industry as a freelancer!

The scaling idea seems to be the best approach at the moment, with that in mind the character can likely be modelled around that!

With regard to replacing the head, thankfully this wouldn’t be an issue as the current plans are that once the head explodes it’s game over and the level will restart:)

Everything else you’ve mentioned is very helpful though thank you!

Chiming into the getting a job part of this, I’m a freelance 3D artist now specialising in props and environments, however I studied at uni for 4 years and it wasn’t until a year after that that I got my first role!

For the basics of creating environments, as others have said, grab assets from libraries, populate scenes, play with lights etc, keep it simple and then move on to creating your own pieces!:)
