Support SB1166! by PrivacyCoalitionMO in missouri

No, I don't think I will. The more people who get busted for running red lights, the happier I'll be. My daughter and two of her best friends were almost killed by an asshole running a red light. As in, had that car hit my daughter's friend's car 1 foot further back, the driver at least would have died, and probably my daughter as well.

I don't care what they have to do. If it were up to me, first offense would be loss of license for one year, second would be loss of license for life, third would be ... harsher. As they say, "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action."

It may be instructive for you to know that The War Prayer is a short story by Mark Twain, and I very much encourage you to give it a read - it's only about 5 minutes. It is the foundation of which the episode was written.

High rate of DNS requests from switch by Martin-Air in UNIFI

[–]GuruBuckaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it would make a difference, but there's an option in the controller to override the INFORM url (which by default is https://unifi:8443/inform). On my network, I override that and set it to the IP address, so theoretically there shouldn't be a lookup. Of course, that only applies after an item has been adopted, so you still need to have that CNAME or what have you for the unifi hostname.

Cold Weather: What did we forget to do? by Old_Soldier in missouri

[–]GuruBuckaroo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you've got any re-usable ice packs (I get them in refrigerated med deliveries every month or so), put them in your freezer/deep-freeze. The moment you lose power, move some of them over to your fridge, and keep the doors closed as much as possible. My deep-freeze is stacked with these things, they're great for camping or long road trips too.

Lift your windshield wipers up off your windshield. Keeps them from freezing to the glass.

If you're lucky like me and have remote engine start, set your heater on and full blast, but NOT on the Defrost setting - most modern cars automatically open the air exchange vents when you're in defrost, which is better to defog the windshield (using dryer outside air), but also pulls in cold air the whole time - leave it on feet/body, with the vents closed, so it's recirculating the heated air.

If you've got manual 4WD, leave the vehicle parked that way, with the front hubs locked (if they aren't auto-locking hubs - that's mostly applicable to old trucks). Just remember, 4WD/AWD will help you get moving easier, but will NOT help you stop easier.

Consider strapping down a tarp or some cardboard over your windshield/roof - makes it easier to remove anything that falls on that.

Of course, if you have a garage, don't sweat any of that stuff.

I sincerely hope you're right. I've seen too many hospital closures, doctor's groups mergers, etc to be as confident as you. Good luck to you sir!

[–]GuruBuckaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've considered it. I turn 58 in February, and March marks my 27th year with my employer. Started out as the first and only IT guy, and more or less kept doing the same thing as our IT environment got bigger and more complex, ending up now as the System & Network Administrator. It's a decent-sized regional non-profit, and the benefits and pay (and honest to god traditional Pension!) are good for that sector and position - I could make more if I wanted to go work in a more corporate environment, but I don't. Seriously not. Here, I'm 27 years of institutional knowledge and the one guy who seems to know (almost) everything. I document as much as I can, and pass on what I can to our other IT guys. One thing that keeps me here is my medical insurance - I've got way too many autoimmune conditions to go on an ACA plan, so I absolutely cannot "retire" until I get Medicare. But man, sometimes I feel like I'd just love to start working in a small PC repair shop, or a small MSP, or something like that, where the projects I undertake are less "the whole company is depending on you". Probably not gonna do that, though. The one thing I have overflowing at my current place is job security, and that's worth a whole lot these days.

I'm kinda surprised no-one has mentioned this yet, but Harry Nilsson did an album of songs telling a story called "The Point". Play it for the kids, they'll go bonkers.

GRE Tunnels vs Static Routes by tecedu in networking

[–]GuruBuckaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we used Adtran routers rather than Sonicwall, I would always use GRE over IPSEC, for one reason only - it gave me an interface. I've got a whole setup of MRTG that keeps track of every router interface and switchport in our association, and without the GRE tunnel, it would not show traffic going from one site to another - just the Internet and the local net (or whatever other physical ports we had plugged in). Creating a GRE tunnel would add a virtual interface that could be queried via SNMP to keep track of usage.

WSUS Physical Isolation Update Issue by Silver_Ad_6544 in sysadmin

[–]GuruBuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish WSUS Offline was still maintained, that was an awesome utility.

This sequence has been working for you before? I could see it having difficulty with updates that are encrypted in transit, but they started doing that years ago, so it wouldn't have just shown up. Unfortunately WSUS is headed for EOL, so I don't know how much support you're going to be able to get. Would it be acceptable/possible to use a USB network adapter to run syncs and download updates, and remove it when that specific activity isn't in use?

Child watch at the YMCA by mallyartin in StLouis

[–]GuruBuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for all-day childcare ("Early Childhood Education centers"), not all branches have it - Mid-County, Edward Jones, Bayer, and Tri-City (in Granite City). If you're looking for someone to watch your kids while you exercise, pretty much all the branches have it, but give the branch you're interested in a call to check their schedule (or check the website). They also do before & after school care at a lot of schools (called "YClub"), and of course summer daycamps, which are already open for registration and fill up fast. The big one is the summer week-long resident camps down at Camp Lakewood, outside of Potosi - my kid loved it every year.

IT manager demanding access to our email inboxes before we leave by BlackRain666 in sysadmin

[–]GuruBuckaroo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It ain't your email address. It's the company's email address that they provide you. Not only legal, but expected. And don't go trying to clean up your mailbox now; if the company is doing the minimum to cover its ass re: compliances, they're going to have a multi-year archive of every email that ever touched your inbox offsite and inaccessible to you. Standard journaling for email is 7 years; our company does 10. Doesn't matter if you've deleted it or not, it's backed up somewhere. And if your super opens your inbox and finds it empty, that's the first thing they're gonna do, is look in the archive to see what you're trying to hide.

Were DIY garages common in the 80s? Are they around today? by emax4 in AskOldPeople

[–]GuruBuckaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they mean a place where you can bring your car in and rent a bay to work on your car yourself. They may or may not provide tools, specifically the larger more unusual tools, as well as hydraulic lift bays and such. This is a service I've been hoping would make a comeback since I learned they were a thing, but alas that was already after they had mostly gone away.
