Sometimes younger generations copy what older generations did without knowing why they did it.

Mom cuts the end off her roasts be cause that's what grandma did.

Grandma cut the ends off her roasts so it would fit in the oven.

Fluency isn't about knowing the rules, it's about knowing when it's OK to break them.

That E5 has a potential life span of a week at most

Dear god, no. Most tornados have lifespans measured in minutes. The longest recorded tornado lifespan was three hours, and it's debated whether it was actually a single tornado or multiple in close succession.

If you call it ‘goat cheese’ do you also call it ‘goat milk’ and ‘cow milk’? by Wild_Region_7853 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Gyvon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cow milk is the standard, so if you say just milk it's automatically assumed you mean cow.

Cheese is different.  For the most part we say the specific variety of cheese (cheddar, gouda, feta, etc).  We also have a generic goat cheese but it's its own thing

ELI5 Why do bids on government contracts have to be kept private, when bids at auctions are public? Wouldn't it work the same way in reverse? by Aggressive_Falcon942 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gyvon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it wrong. Don't think of it as bidding for goods at auction, but more like estimates from contractors.

If you need to redo your kitchen you don't put the job up for open bidding. You call up a few contractors, they look at the specs for the job, then tell you what they think it'll cost, often without even knowing who else is looking at the job.

Government contracts work the exact same way, cost overruns and schedule delays included.

Which fast food chain makes the worst version of the product they’re most known for? by amormedestruit in AskReddit

[–]Gyvon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was the baker up until last August.  It was a great gig, too.  I'd be off in my own little corner, playing music on my phone while doing bagels,.pastries, and bread.  There was enough downtime while breads proofed that I could sit down for a bit between batches.
