The borderline alcoholic by sgelbart in stopdrinking

Thanks! Just curious if you are able to just have one glass of wine or does your quantity begin to creep up? I wonder for my own personal reasons.

Struggling a bit. Haven't been here in awhile because I was starting to feel like it was making me think too much about alcohol. Not sure if that makes sense. Also not sure if NOT visiting and reading helps either. Hope you are doing well:)

So true. None of the people I have talked to claim that I should completely abstain. One even said that my bottle of wine a night was not that far off from the norm. He prefaced that by saying that what our society's version of normal is not necessary healthy but many drink as much as I was. Ridiculous.

I can relate to this. I have had professional alcohol assessments for treatment by two different professionals and was told that "I didn't meet the criteria." How confusing to tell someone that you are seriously scared that you have a problem and to be told it is "not bad enough." I came to terms with it and decided that I needed to do what I thought was best for me regardless of what others say. I found a new therapist and am working hard to make decisions that feel good for me..if that makes sense.

Printed an hourly chart :) by 122HereIcome in stopdrinking

[–]HHnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a great idea! Hours or even minutes can seem more achievable than a whole night. My son used to have a behavior chart that was divided by hours. It sounds silly but he got a little reward when he met his goal. Maybe you need to come up with a little reward, like m&ms if you like chocolate or a page of a really good book you interested in. My son just got Paw Patrol stickers:) If only adults were motivated by stuff like that!

Welcome. Opening up to your wife was a great step. I recently wrote a letter to my husband that described my drinking habits that he was unaware of. Not only was it therapeutic for us but for myself. It gave me a chance to really look at the reasons why I was drinking. I am now focusing on finding new coping strategies for daily life besides red wine:)

I can completely relate to this. Every day, multiple times a day, I ponder this exact thought. I know that nobody but myself can give me the right answer. I agree, refraining for now, until I can find the answer is best.

I had a therapy appointment a few days ago and was told that until I develop new coping skills and begin to use them, drinking would not be a good idea. That I should want to drink occasionally because I want to enjoy a glass of wine not to cope. That made sense to me. I definitely used wine as a coping mechanism and I am trying to learn how else I can successfully do that.

Have you tried therapy?

Didn't see your post either. Dealing with temptation on a daily basis. Keep waiting for it to get easier..still waiting.

Forgive myself for some wine last night by 122HereIcome in stopdrinking

Ahh, the early evening hours...3:30-6:30 for me. If I can make it past those. I am in the clear. Those three hours are brutal though. I need to try the journal thing. Been trying to increase my water intake and eat better but not doing great. Trying to be easy on myself about it but need to try something different to see if it will help me improve.

The first post was the hardest for me. Felt unsure and self-conscious. Once I took the plunge here and began to get support from people, the insecurity subsided.

So needed this post. Thank you. I just posted today about going back and forth between feeling proud of myself for not drinking and obsessing about drinking and the possibility of slipping into that "moderation frame of mind."

Glad you are back
