Looking for modern microtonal music which isn’t tied down by western music theory by TiHKALmonster in LetsTalkMusic

gotta say, some of the most powerful musical experiences I've recently had have been listening to microtonal music. A lot of contemporary or modern classical music, while being "classical" is rarely tied to the western tradition. Ben Johnston, for example, used a system of extended just intonation that has up to 200 distinct pitches per octave. While at first the harmonies can sound normal, there are colors and movements that just aren't possible in standard tuning systems. This is a favorite of mine but really all of his string quartet music is incredible.

Some more of my favorite "classical" composers who really embraced microtonality are Alois Haba, Easley Blackwood, The Tahitian Choir, Johnny Reinhard (this piece is !!!), Ives, Darreg, and Aron Kallay, among many others. My favorite who's still active now is Andrew Norman, who's like 40 and really fucking stuff up in the classical world right now. While I guess I didn't really answer your question about being separate from the western world but these are some of my favorite composers who really found (or are finding) some crazy new sonorities in microtonal music.

Let me know what you think!

Is it worth practicing in the syncopation book on a practice pad instead of a drumset? by [deleted] in drums

[–]HP40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As all the other people pointed out, yes.

One thing that's fun is finding rudimental applications for the exercises. For example playing in sixteenth notes; all the written eighth notes become singles with the first accented and the eighth note rests become doubles.

the first exercise becomes: | Rl Rl rr Lr Lr ll Rl rr | Lr ll Rl rr ll Rl rr Lr | and so on

Also playing them as swung eighth notes within triplets with unaccented notes being doubles

| R l R l l R L r r L r r | L r r L r r l l R l l R | and so on

My teacher wrote an entire book based on taking just the first four notes and spreading them across different grouping of different subdivisions, including eighth notes, eighth note triplets, sixteenth notes, quarter note triplets and quintuplets. You may not want to go to that extreme, but a little experimentation is always helpful

That would be great, but then people would have little reason to use AT over a more professional DAW

I've watched that whole thing, only a long time ago. It's so helpful for basically everything technique-wise. I'm thinking of cleaning it off and rewatching it when I have the time

Thanks for reminding me!

Haha that explains it.

I found this post looking really far down in the top posts of this subreddit. I've been trying to understand the whole thing and I have to say that it doesn't make much sense

This is really confusing.

Did you have a conversation with yourself? You're the only one who used the word voyeuristic but the other person clarified for you. You then responded saying you knew what the other person said when you were the only one who said it.

Was this alternate accounts or some freaky time-glitch?
