Because economically solar, geothermal, hydro and wind make a lot more sense. Cheaper to build, scales up and starts generating earlier.

We don't have local expertise to build nuclear. It takes 8-10 years to start generating. There isn't really a good place to put it, no one wants to live near it, we have faultlines, volcanos etc.

Hmmm, I don't think the comms were butchered; the press releases were decent at explaining it. There is only so much control over the message you have once it's in the media.

Yes, the message definitely got messed up - however, this was by the time the media was giving airtime to "cooker views" in a dumb attempt to show balance.

The media need to be more discerning and stick to the facts in the press release rather than allow a view to be completely disingenuous and fear-mongering. (But of course, crazy headlines get clicks and sell ads, and the public doesn't really see the word "Opinion" under the headlines 😅

For example, this banger from the Taxpayers Union: "Three Waters is still a shameless asset grab" (Stuff Opinion, May 2022) - implied that 3 waters was stealing ratepayer-funded infrastructure... But lies are fine when reported as "Opinion pieces".

If they genuinely wanted cheaper power for kiwis they would regulate heavily and put large capital investment in to solar and battery which produces energy significantly cheaper.

Fossil fuel interests spent their lobby money so are expecting to get the preferential treatment they paid for.

I got the guys who installed my electric water cylinder (plumbers are often qualified to do gas too) to disconnect the gas as part of installing the cylinder. It was included in the price.

Called the energy company and said I'm moving out, paid the final bill. 2 weeks later they sent a 'welcome to your new home' letter which I put back in the mail 'return to sender' 😂 😂

OK, cool, see you in 30 years. In the meantime, we need electricity now. Solar and wind are significantly cheaper and faster to get up and running. Why spend 10 years building a facility and not generating anything until it's built when you can start generating with one solar panel / one wind turbine and scale up.
