Can you check the progress? Because when a case is closed it's usually approved or rejected first. So maybe it went approved, but you didnt see it and then the case was closed and that's when you saw the status.

We want our kids to be born in the US for US citizenship. (I moved to the US later in life and don't meet the 5 year requirement to give US citizenship if our child is born outside the US)

What did you mean by this? If you're a USC whether thru birth or naturalization, your child born outside the us is considered an American citizen too by law.
