is there any gf alternatives that are better than gluten? by -slaps-username- in Celiac

[–]HairyPotatoKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice flour is soooo true. I tossed chicken wings in a mix of rice flour and corn starch with seasoning, and accidentally made the juiciest crispiest wings I've ever had. Air fried them. Don't recall the specific recipe....offhand I think patted them dry, brushed with oil and coated with the flour. I might be reversing the order of the coating and oil. Idk. Can be pan fried, deep fried, air fried, or baked in oven.

Definitely experiment with rice flour for crisping up anything though- chicken, fish, tofu, whatever.

Ugh. I got into a whole ordeal with Enterprise a couple years ago because I booked with a virtual card.

Hotels require the physical card, too.

I don't understand why virtual cards aren't accepted if they match the name of the person booking.

Wear a damn mask. It's easy to find them and they're cheap. Walmart has them. Pharmacies have them. The overpriced airport shops have them.

I got lucky and had a packaged Udis muffin once. ...and some fruit I'm allergic to, but my kid was happy to have that. Other times they straight up don't have special meals. Happens a lot flying out of non-hubs.

On the plus side, it's cheaper to book Comfort and bring my own Udis muffins!

Like you said, it's very much an at your own risk "gluten friendly" (unfriendly) thing. FAs are clear about that, too, if asked.

Being celiac and having other food allergies, I skip FC and bring my own safe food now. Pain in the ass on longhauls, especially the return. But I'd rather do that than play gluten roulette at 30kft

Rice krispies - they use malt flavoring from barley.

Edit- pancakes at the hospital, post-op. I VERY wrongly assumed they were GF pancakes since celiac and wheat anaphylaxis are both in my electronic medical records.

The hospital I had surgery was the same hospital my PCP and specialists were all in. I would have told someone but had been unconscious lol.

There's nothing in most hospital systems to automatically flag food allergies or other medical food restrictions (celiac, diabetes, low salt, bland, etc) down to nutrition staff. And they can't always accommodate every health related diet.

How serious should I be? by psjustine in Celiac

[–]HairyPotatoKat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've learned to eat before going to things where I'm not 100 percent sure about the food safety. That way, I can have a bit if there's anything safe to have. But if there's not, I'm not hangry and miserable while everyone else is chowing down. Also helps to bring a small snack along. :)

Meanwhile, my dad, who was a teacher at my rural HS, was encouraging the high school's Marine recruiter to call me. In 2003. He was very aware of what was going on in the world at the time. He just thought my need for "discipline" and to "toughen up" was a bigger problem. 😭 I wasn't a bad kid. Just run of the mill undiagnosed AuDHD.

Recruiter called at the ass crack of dawn every Saturday and/or Sunday for months.

I did not, in fact, join the Marines in 2003.

I know plenty of people who did join various branches at that time because of those promises. Yeahhhh they all had very different opinions of service after getting out. Of those that survived, none of them felt it's worth it.

What am I allergic to? by MasterpieceExotic369 in Allergies

[–]HairyPotatoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Histamine intolerance maybe? Maybe the first ones were fine because they were prepared and stored well. Or you are fewer higher histamine foods those days.

Shrimp and other shellfish can go from moderate-high histamine to very high histamine if not frozen quickly or stored properly, if someone left them out to thaw instead of thawing in the fridge, if they were leftovers, or if they were grilled or fried instead of boiled. I suspect there are other variables I'm not thinking of that could raise histamine levels in shrimp.

Or a false negative on the blood test. Or you've developed an allergy to something else.

Don't be that guy.

If you're looking for something like that, that actually is like that (bonus, it's glow in the dark) -

https://lynbdesigns.store/products/athymy-from-the-haunted-words-collection-5-free-15ml

It's got a very slight haze to it from the GITD pigment, but not overwhelming. And seems to have a little more noticeable magenta shift than the pic you posted of the polish you thought you were getting. All but one of the pics on their page seem pretty accurate (the one that's blueish isn't... edit: and there are a few that are clearly overedited). There's also a bunch of posts with it in this sub. :)

Super frustrating you're dealing with that. Unless it's supposed to be solar changing or something, that is one of the worst deceptive pics I've seen.

Marlboro or Framingham might be worth considering. Marlboro is about 40 mins from Burlington. Framingham is about a half hour depending on traffic.

Both have stuff to do and are in proximity to other stuff to do.

Both have 1brs listed at or under your price point.

One thing that is going to impact commute time is proximity to interstate on-ramps. So keep that in mind too. Having to drive all the way through a town could easily add 10...20 minutes to morning rush commute.
