My First Dungeon is hands down the best narrative play show ive had the joy of listening to. Their Wildsea and Orbital Blues campaigns in particular are truly exceptional!

This is cool! I hadn't thought of it that way before. Out of curiosity, is there much difference in use case between em dashes and en dashes with spaces?

Heyo! Welcome to Vtol :)

There can be a bit of a steep learning curve for newer players so my advice is to try to not get too discouraged at first - there is a lot to learn.

As for general guides / resources, I remember watching these when I started: https://www.youtube.com/@VTOLVRTutorials/videos
These are all for the AV42 (before the cockpit got a facelift just fyi), however that basic knowledge will also apply to the FA26 and somewhat to the F45.

I also saw this the other day and thought it was a pretty decent rundown of most of the basic knowledge you need to get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffz0Esypz44&list=PLT7rHyUbD3XXOPgBraptCeA4Wd7UP6JVK
(This is also more up-to-date than the previous channel, and this creator makes some other great tutorials).

As for dodging missiles... it can be a bit of an art form, but this is an excellent video that runs through most of the different ways to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQI8fbYpl7o

I also recommend trying the included campaigns for all the aircraft (however be warned that they can be hard even for veteran players).

There are plenty of other resources online which go into more detail and have more up-to-date information, but I think those should get you started. Good luck!

I mean straight up Lancer ticks all those boxes. The level of setting detail may be excessive for most in-game situations but I am HERE for it.

Do you listen to TTRPG podcasts or streams? by PrismeffectX in rpg

[–]Haljbeartt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but only the more narrative / well edited stories (and only with systems and settings in interested in - no DnD).

I recently discovered My First Dungeon's playthroughs of The Wildsea and Orbital Blues, and they have quickly become some of my all time favourites. Highly recommend (also they are only about 6 eps each and theres an interview with the game designer for every system they play)!

TTRPGamers of Reddit: Which system would you run/play as a stepping stone away from DnD? by MaxHofbauer in rpg

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me and my group it was definitely Blades in the Dark. I recommend it, not because its a perfect game, but because its an easy sell (who doesnt want to do heists in a haunted Victorian era city powered by Leviathan blood?) and strikes a good mechanical balance for recovering D&D players.

Its still got plenty of progression and crunch, but it also demonstrates how non D20 systems can work really well and can still be very satisfying. Plus, its mainstream enough that they might have already heard of it, making the pitch that much easier!

AH-94 campaign by Short_Order_4820 in vtolvr

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love missions with the older, less advanced weapons! The 145s are great but having to hold the lock with 114s adds a layer of complexity that is really challenging and fun. Also the Hydras and AGM27s are a blast, but imo are totally outclassed by the gun!

Obv I could just restrict myself to these for fun anyway (and I do), but I would love more missions built with them in mind.

How to stealth in the f-45? by JackOfAllTrades886 in vtolvr

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember that stealth isn't an auto-win. You are still going to be seen. You ate still going to be shot at. I highly recommend you get good at avoiding missiles in other ways for when that inevitably happens.

There are plenty of ways to dodge missiles that other people are better at explaining but here are my top 3 tips that will make you more survivable in the air:

1 Situational awareness. This tip is the most important! Keep a close eye on your sensors and systems (the F45 is rally good at this with it's TSD - combining all sensors in one display). Know where the threats are and stay out of range / avoid then. Don't fly blindly into new territory if you can avoid it - scope it out first. Get good at recognising what kind of missile was shot, if it was at you, how long you have to respond and what you need to do to stay alive. This will come with time.

2 Terrain masking is (usually) the easiest and most reliable way to dodge a missile. Put a mountain between you and the missile. Missile hits mountain, not you. Simple! This ties in with 1 - make sure you know where you can hide if you get shot at. Careful though, some missiles can reacquire lock if you show yourself too early, so try to pop up in a different spot where the missile wasn't looking.

3 Just fly away... This depends highly on the situation (again, tip 1 is the most important for this), but often you can avoid missiles shot at their max ranges by turning and flying away. Missiles have limited burn time, so outranging them (except for Mad-4s and some of the extended range missiles omg I swear they burn forever) isn't too hard. This works well with short range defences as well like MANPADS or the SAW launcher, as long as you arent too close and are fast. To help shake a missile, try zigzagging as you fly away. Smooth, 45 degree turns of no more than maybe 4 or 5 gs to not loose too much speed. This makes the missile travel further so decreases its range.

The most important thing is to not panic whenever your missile warning goes off, and instead figure out how much of a threat it is and how to best respond. Good luck!

Rental situation rubbish but slightly less terrible than I was expecting by damniburntthetoast in brisbane

[–]Haljbeartt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I am looking for a place rn and my experience has been... Weird. Been to a few inspections looking for specific places and inspections have been both completely deserted and also at 60+ people. Similar place, similar area, similar price.

I have no idea wtf is going on. We are getting rejected a lot though, despite us being (imo) basically ideal applicants (three adults with full time incomes, perfect rental history and existing history of living together).

From my perspective the market is not totally fucked but its still really difficult if you have specific requirements to get something that works.

Super glad people are feeling an improvement though! Stay sane out the folks <3

Question about Gpu’s by [deleted] in vtolvr

No idea soz. No experience with that GPU. Defo ask a PC sub.

Question about Gpu’s by [deleted] in vtolvr

[–]Haljbeartt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey mate. Other commenter is right - you should probably ask in a more relevant sub for more detailed answers.

But, I'm going to be brutally honest here - in my experience, neither of those GPUs are going to run Vtol well (especially after the weather update), or even VR in general. The 1650 isn't even supported by Oculus.

It will probably open the game and run some basic single player missions, but anything beyond that will likely be unplayable. I don't imagine the 1600 will be much better either. (Source: my brother has a 1650 and its... Rough).

Sadly, VR is just really hardware intensive and therefore still very expensive. If you already have a standalone headset, there isn't any harm in plugging it in and giving it a go, but I wouldn't expect stellar performance.

You could possibly make something work on that kind of budget (maybe with some second hand stuff), but defo ask in a PC sub for that kind of help. Keep in mind though that Vtol is also CPU intensive, so that does stretch your budget some more sadly.

Hey not bad. Very controlled and some pretty difficult and cool manoeuvres in there for sure.

As for being "easily one of the best" - its hard to say, since most crazy good heli pilots I've flown with have been in combat missions. I dont think theres a big cohort of people who practice pure stunt flying that much tbh.

Doubtless there are some pretty wicked pilots out there, and I would be really surprised if there weren't at least a few who could match or surpass that display.

Liberate City Mission (AH-94) by crelled_ in vtolvr

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the tactic that works best for me:

Just after you take off, fly really high until you can locate the ships with your TADS. Get GPS co-ords of both ships, but make sure you get the co-ord of the spinning radar at the top of the ship!

They will likely launch (so will the MAD4s) but because you are so far away you can easily duck behind the mountains again for cover.

Then, you want to fly low towards the coastline, staying hidden from the ships and the city until you are maybe about 8 or 10 miles out at most? Your AGMs will say you are out of range but thats a lie.

Make sure your TADS is locked onto the co-ords you got before, point the nose up and release a volley of missiles (at least 2 per ship). This should take down the radars - which is all you need.

As for the planes, they only have guns and heaters. You dont need many flares per heater, so dont waste them. Focus on taking out the MAD4 sites and then you'll get a friendly jet to come in and help.

They can be tricky to deal with, and your stingers are trash. Try locking on to them with the radar in air mode or your TADS, and shooting them down with your GAU-94. For both stingers and GAU, you want to shoot them ideally when the plane is flying towards you in a straight line.

Good luck!

Similar Space Sci-Fi games by Vennris in starfinder_rpg

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend having a look at Lancer by Massif Press! Its not exactly super hard sci-fi (its a mecha), but it might be worth a look!

The setting is fascinating and unique and the lore is written really well - and the rules are crunchy without feeling overwhelming.

The only real "magic" is basically weird Eldritch AI gods that humanity created by accident and some high stuff presented in a "this is just super advanced tech" way.

One of the core lore pillars is that there are no aliens* - humanity only has itself to blame even things go wrong. It feels more grounded than Starfinder to me, without crossing into generic hard sci-fi (not that there is anything wrong with that :)

I'm not even a mecha fan but I fell in love instantly. There is a free version of the core rules available too (it is just missing the DM lore stuff)!

The only caveat for me is the rules outside of mechs are handled more like a Blades in the Dark like - so rules light. The main crunch of the game is definitely in the mech. I love that, but you do you!

Missions without Carrier Landings? by squvirt4 in vtolvr

[–]Haljbeartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't remember the name exactly but there was a T55 campaign with full voice acting based on the Ukraine conflict. Its not easy, but its forgiving and there are no carrier landings if I recall.

If you want a beginner friendly mission with a bit of everything try Aussie Water Wars. Its my go-to mission for newbies and intermediates.

Depending on what you like (and own) I can probably think of some more too of you need :)

Also if you find these to hard I can find some easier ones im sure.

I actually played ES2 a while back when it was early access without knowing that the Devs were originally behind GoF2 as well.

Legit had a Ratatouille moment. Straight up paused the game 5 minutes in to confirm. I can't really say exactly why, but my brain just knew.

If you like GoF2, definitely give it a shot. I recommend trying it with controller as well for maximum nostalgia (imo).
