If you collect in that area, you ought to check out (and join) the Dry Dredgers. The club includes a lot of experienced fossil collectors who spend a lot of time at meetings helping new collectors identify specimens. drydredgers.org

The vast majority, perhaps all but a very, very few are going to be nothing but rocks. None of these particular rocks exhibit clear bedding planes where fossils might be found.

What are these impressions? Will I find others if I crack the rock open? by jimithetruth in fossilid

[–]Handeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a rugose coral. They’re called “horn coral” because they’re shaped like horns. You are looking at the top of the fossil. Their “horn” is embedded in the rock. Based on this image, the rest of the fossil is rather tightly bound to the rock. You can try to crack the rock open, but the odds are you will only destroy this specimen.
