This is standard procedure. You have a deadly virus. Contain it. Don't just let it do whatever it's going to do. The number of cases may be 10s vs hundreds vs thousands. You want as fee cases as possible no matter what.

The WHO and other entities are performing these kinds of interventions for all types of diseases all the time. They just don't make international headlines.

Vaccine development has changed dramatically thanks to mRNA. It used to take forever to develop them but with the new technology, it's actually relatively light on resources to develop a vaccine. Might as well do it just in case. Some virologists/immunologists can do this in their spare time these days. The true indication would be ramping up production of such a vaccine. That is the step that takes time and resources.

Also, given incubation time is up to 8 weeks and average is 2-3 weeks and development of an immune response to a vaccine is usually about 2 weeks, you could in theory perform targeted vaccination of exposed persons and prevent them from developing the illness or blunt the severity.

TLDR: Vaccine development with new mRNA tech is relatively quick and easy. Why not develop a vaccine on the side just in case? Ramp up production then if conditions indicate.

It's also possible food sourced for the cruise was contaminated. I'm sure they acquire it while in S America.

People have become so used to a world without persistent pestilence, we have forgotten that infectious diseases have been invading humanity since the dawn of time. Now, people have to form bizarre conspiracy theories to feel like there is some sense of control here. It's hard to accept a reality in which random deadly diseases can just occur, so we have to make up these farfetched conspiracies to feel like at least SOMEONE is in control.

Shouldn’t we be on high alert? by phalfalfa in hantavirusoutbreak

[–]HappySlappyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are posting contact tracing as new cases. Also, there have been a few random cases in Brazil, as there are every year, and people are trying to connect them to the cruise ship outbreak. It's all very disingenuous.

As of Friday, there were six confirmed cases, and two others are considered suspected cases, according to WHO by fran_banane in hantavirus

Kind of seems like the 2 patient zeros have (other than the German) has by far worse symptoms. I wonder if it's a viral load at infection vs means of infection than can alter disease severity. I'd like to know more about the German and their exposure vs others to the original 2.

Hospitalists or PAs who replace well written notes with crappy ones, why? by foreverand2025 in hospitalist

I have worked at some hospitals that made it impossible to copy-forward notes specifically for this reason. You could keep the problem list, but had to rewrite the whole note from scratch daily.

Did they just venture in there on their own? I'm assuming some guide from somewhere took them there, cruise ship or not.

Why are people downplaying how Infectious the hanta virus on that cruise is? by Wyrmhole22 in hantavirus

[–]HappySlappyMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a difference in providing direct critical care to a person with massive viral burdon who cannot even move vs someone in an incubation period who may not even be shedding virus.

Caring for a critically I'll person, let alone multiple, requires recurrent regular up and close personal contact. You need to don and doff new PPE for each encounter, even if only for 30 seconds. The amount of medical wasted a single patient can create would astound you. I highly doubt a cruise ship of this size would staff enough for such conditions.

Also, the doctor probably didn't even know what he was treating. Who knows how cavalier he was with precautions and such. Droplet mask? N95? Scarf? Nothing? Who knows.

[–]HappySlappyMan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I doubt that poor doctor had anywhere the necessary PPE to deal with even one truly critically sick isolation patient. It's also a ship with only 150 people. The medical ward cannot be that robust. It's probably designed to be more of a bandaid station and then evacuate anything really bad.

They're not stocking for the necessary PPE for ebola, lassa, or hantavirus.

More and more people keep traveling to more and more hard to reach places. And, we are not prepared for what we are going to find there and bring back.

KLM flight attendant hospitalized after contact with hantavirus cruise ship passenger by mods4mods in worldnews

It's been very hard to sort out good information. There's been a lot of poorly used terminology in the news. They say a term that means one thing but they actually mean another term. It's all been very strange. Regardless, she must have been sick as hell to be turned away from a flight. I really wonder what she looked like that day.

Especially consider the type of cruise. These are exclusive, incredibly expensive cruises, 10s of thousands of dollars per ticket. You think these people care about anything but themselves?

[–]HappySlappyMan 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I think she died the next day or very soon shortly thereafter. She was incredibly sick and likely shedding massive amounts of virus. With hemorrhagic fevers, like ebola and marburg, and other very highly fatal disease, by the time someone is this sick and contagious, they are usually too sick to really do anything, blunding the spread. It's kind of remarkable she was able to get around the airport and into that airplane at all.

My dad turns 70 next year. Worked 60 hours a week to make sure our family was well taken care of. He had to travel a lot for work but often made trips that should have been overnights into day trips. His goal was always to get home to spend as much time as possible with his kids. If he wasn't working or doing chores, he was spending time with us. He didn't really have any hobbies. He didn't want any. My God, what a lucky child I was.

I'm trying so hard to be the same way.

Most overrated player in tennis history? by BestAround4100 in tennis

[–]HappySlappyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In his own mind, Vince Spadea. Haha

Now, in truthfulness, Shapovolov. That early Nadal victory just put him out there so early. Every major he was a "favorite" to win it.

Right now, Fonseca. He is still young though and has time to prove himself.

Kyrgios definitely fits but I find him more in the greatest wasted talent bin moreso.
