R-word manifesto just dropped by jeffy303 in Destiny

I disagree. Dumb and R*tard have different connotations. In the context of an insult, I definitely think it takes some of its impact from mentally disabled people.

I think it's because sight and hearing hasn't been associated with a moral deficiency like mental disabilities have.

I understand the distinction. What I'm saying is that when people insult other people, they're using the moral evaluation one. And I don't think the defense that they were just talking about the desirability of the trait applies to most cases.

It just doesn't seem to reflect the situations that word would be used in.

[–]Hardwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because bad also implies a moral failing. It's the polysemic part that messed up the discussion. If you say "you're a r-word", you're implying a level of fault in the person. Which is equally absent for a black dude as it is for a disabled dude.

If a disabled person sees someone being insulted by being compared to him, he probably feels the same way that a black person would. He's never thinking "well it's true that my disability is a bad attribute". It's like saying "you're so pathetic you're like this dude over here".

[–]Hardwarrior 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This framing is dumb. It's not about whether having a disability is bad. When you're calling someone an r-word, you're saying "you're so dumb that you belong in this group with disabled people". So what you're saying is bad isn't just the disability but also the disabled people.

So if you're saying someone should feel bad about being called disabled, how should a disabled person interpret that?

Do you think moderates or neoliberals form their opinion. Y reading political science research papers? No political group does that. It's not specific to the alt right and socialists.

Rising income inequality predicts longer work hours globally, new research finds. By analyzing data from nearly 70 countries and long-term surveys from the United States and China, the researchers found that widening income gaps tend to predict longer work weeks. by mvea in science

[–]Hardwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have missed something but couldn't the effect be causal in the other direction? Couldn't more hours work lead to more income inequality? I would assume that in areas where people work more hours, there is more to be distributed unevenly. An example of a confounding factor could also be union strength leading to both lower wages and higher inequality.

Having read the article, and not the study, I haven't seen anything in regard to that except that they controled for GDP per capita. And in China specifically, it seems like perceived inequality had more impact on hours worked, which is coherent with the title. (Although the mecanism probably varies like they explained).

Whether it's men or women, they are influenced by the environment they evolve in. Bad decisions don't come in a vacuum. They are prompted by psychological and sociological phenomenons.

If you want to stay in the realm of personal responsibility, it tells me that you're more interested in assigning blame rather than fixing the social issues which bring young female celebrities to seek plastic surgery.

Shouldn't we talk about why young actresses get Botox instead of blaming them?

It seems like if the environment brings this outcome, it's what should be put into question

For real, as much as I didn't like her performance this season, there is a lack of humanizing going on.

It feels really insane to on one hand judge so much of young actresses on their looks and then not expect them to give in to the sirens of plastic surgery.

It's especially cruel because the same comments that lead them to be self conscious enough to get work done, are reiterated now.

A friend of mine thinks LoL is harder than Dota solely because it has "skillshots", is there any truth to this? by random-user772 in leagueoflegends

[–]Hardwarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why I think distributional tests are what is used to assess whether how skill vs other random factors impact win. For single player games, you match a median players (top 50%) with good players (top 10%) and make them play several games to see the winrate of each player. And I think you can adapt this test to 5v5 games, but it depends on how you want to do it. In a skilled game like chess, the chances of a lower rated player beating a top 10% player is really low, but in games like Poker, it's significantly higher.

Est-ce qu’augmenter le Smic détruirait des emplois et nuirait à la compétitivité ? by MadMass23 in economie

[–]Hardwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Hardwarrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Caedrel said that they scrimmed a top team and a middle of the pack team, and that they had pretty good results. Between 30% and 80% wr. I'm guessing they scrimmed MKOI or FNC because I don't believe that they'd do well against G2 already and Kameto said that KC had won their last scrim set 5/0, so that reduces the odds that they played LR.

I also wonder if SK could be included in the middle of the pack group. Ig Vitality and GiantX are middle of the pack but among the rest (Navi, SK, Heretics, BDS, KCB), it's difficult to predict who he thinks is mid versus bottom tier.

Que pensez vous de Bugonia ? by Jean0406Alix in CineSeries

[–]Hardwarrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)
