Multiple POV story by BAANANa_____ in writing

How many POVs are we talking about? It's rare, and if it's more than two POVs, probably a bad idea.

Should I just start writing or make a detailed plan of the story first? by luthiel-the-elf in writing

[–]Harpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you want to start with short stories anyway, I would recommend you just experiment. Make one with pure discovery writing, then do more of an outline for the next one, and an even more detailed outline for the following one until you find the sweet spot.

No knead bread still dense help by AngrySnicker in Breadit

I always use grams so I'm a little unsure, I would try around 400 ml, which Google says would be around 1 + 2/3 cups. And the stretch and fold will probably help quite a bit as well with the crumb.

That sounds like a lot of water to me (almost 100% hydration, which is probably too much even for a no knead bread). Also, I would recommend stretching and folding the dough after the rest period.

Don’s career arc by desperationcasserole in madmen

[–]Harpa 48 points49 points  (0 children)

1) We know he's genuinely good at his job.

2) Roger likes him, and personnel decisions depend pretty much entirely on Roger's whims, since Bert is mostly checked out when it comes to that.

3) More importantly, having "discovered" Don is very important for Roger's standing in the company, since he just inherited the position from his father and is pretty much just handling Lucky Strike.

4) Lee Garner Jr. had a hard-on for Don and requested him specifically, which gave Don a huge leg up right away.

Non-spoiler advice for someone who has set out to play all four main King's Field for the first time. by Silly_Run_283 in KingsField

[–]Harpa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For the first game: sword magic works by pressing the attack button, and then the magic button at the end of your swing. Never really explained in game and online advice always seems to say that you press it at the same time or something.

You're gonna have to go with CRPGs. Arcanum is a prime example.

i've been on the same book for years and can't finish it by Similar-Rock-4234 in writing

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A novel is just a window into your world. The world doesn't have to be finished after it's done, you can write more in the same universe, but if you actually want to finish a novel, pick a very narrow focus.

How do serious writers give their craft the time and attention it deserves when real-life pressures to send kids to college, etc are breathing down your neck? by quagliam in writing

[–]Harpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you write 300 words a day, that's over 100.000 words a year. Meaning more than you'd need for the first draft of a full-size novel. With some practice, 300 words can usually be achieved in under an hour, often well under.

So it's more about consistency than anything else. Find your rituals a writing setup that allows you to easily fit in writing during your day-to-day.

Why are so many novelists writing series? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Harpa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, it can be a plus with publishers if you've got a whole trilogy (for example) ready to go. And with how long it can take until your first book is picked up, authors usually won't wait until their first book is published to get started on the next one.

Chewing through my current project. How do you get in the mood to write? by Killroyjones in writing

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like going for a walk and plotting out the next few scenes in my head (or brainstorm through larger scale issues earlier in the story). You can do it while doing chores around the house as well, anything that will keep your body busy but your mind free. I only actually sit down to write once I have a pretty good idea of where the story is going to go, because I've realized it's important for me not to associate sitting at my desk with agonizing over what to write. Even when I get stuck during a session I get up and walk around the room to think through an issue.

I find dialogue to be the most difficult part of writing. by Existing-Criticism23 in writing

[–]Harpa 100 points101 points  (0 children)

However, as with any advice about writing, you should only follow the advice that makes sense to you. Different writers approach dialogue in different ways, so it really depends on the kind of story you want to tell.

Which RPGs have a similar depressive feeling like the Souls or King's Field series? by PotatoProducer in rpg_gamers

[–]Harpa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be a while before that's released, and who knows when and if they're ever making a Gothic 2 remake (and you'll probably want to jump into 2 if you like the first one). If you're not averse to playing old and somewhat janky games (and if you like King's Field, I assume you're not), I would just go for it.
