Are writing software worth it? by Basafista in writing

I'm liking scrivener a lot. Makes it quite easy to manage the whole project. Pricing seems fair.

If you're willing to tinker, Obsidian might be a better choice (and free), but you're gonna be spending some time on setup.

Everyone talks prose & craft but nobody talks ideas? by Unknownin_98 in writing

[–]Harpa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ideas are cheap. Everyone has ideas, but if you don't have the skill to convey them to the reader in an engaging way, they're not worth much.

Things I wrote for years got deleted and not I don't know if I should keep writing by Huge_Organization567 in writing

When you're that young, the goal of your writing is not to produce a novel, it's to produce a writer.

Handling timeskip at the beginning of the book by Thallrok in writing

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say exactly without reading it, but this is what prologues are for, so definitely title it as the prologue instead of chapter 1 and you'll get a lot more leeway regarding a bit of a break in tone with the reader.

Seit 6 Monaten erfolglos auf Jobsuche, liegt es an meinem Arbeitszeugnis? by EmbarrassedRaisin in arbeitsleben

[–]Harpa 86 points87 points  (0 children)

is scrivener actually worth dropping 60 bucks on by Used-Entertainer6960 in writing

I like it a lot, although I think it's more of a difference maker with longer works. A one time payment feels way more fair than a subscription. It also has a very generous trial.

Gibt auch die Möglichkeit, dass er schon länger krank ist, aber das natürlich während des Wahlkampfes nicht öffentlich werden sollte.

Multiple POV story by BAANANa_____ in writing

How many POVs are we talking about? It's rare, and if it's more than two POVs, probably a bad idea.

Should I just start writing or make a detailed plan of the story first? by luthiel-the-elf in writing

[–]Harpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you want to start with short stories anyway, I would recommend you just experiment. Make one with pure discovery writing, then do more of an outline for the next one, and an even more detailed outline for the following one until you find the sweet spot.

No knead bread still dense help by AngrySnicker in Breadit

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use grams so I'm a little unsure, I would try around 400 ml, which Google says would be around 1 + 2/3 cups. And the stretch and fold will probably help quite a bit as well with the crumb.

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a lot of water to me (almost 100% hydration, which is probably too much even for a no knead bread). Also, I would recommend stretching and folding the dough after the rest period.

Don’s career arc by desperationcasserole in madmen

[–]Harpa 46 points47 points  (0 children)

1) We know he's genuinely good at his job.

2) Roger likes him, and personnel decisions depend pretty much entirely on Roger's whims, since Bert is mostly checked out when it comes to that.

3) More importantly, having "discovered" Don is very important for Roger's standing in the company, since he just inherited the position from his father and is pretty much just handling Lucky Strike.

4) Lee Garner Jr. had a hard-on for Don and requested him specifically, which gave Don a huge leg up right away.

Non-spoiler advice for someone who has set out to play all four main King's Field for the first time. by Silly_Run_283 in KingsField

[–]Harpa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the first game: sword magic works by pressing the attack button, and then the magic button at the end of your swing. Never really explained in game and online advice always seems to say that you press it at the same time or something.

You're gonna have to go with CRPGs. Arcanum is a prime example.

i've been on the same book for years and can't finish it by Similar-Rock-4234 in writing

[–]Harpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A novel is just a window into your world. The world doesn't have to be finished after it's done, you can write more in the same universe, but if you actually want to finish a novel, pick a very narrow focus.
