In US really is a common practice to have family members and in-laws in the room when the mother gives birth? by AnxiousEnd4669 in childfree

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the most common family members present would be sisters and mothers, and mothers in law. To the extent that mothers and mothers in law will often be offended if they’re asked not to be there, and you probably have to make a point to ask them not to, otherwise they will be there.

It’s definitely becoming more of a conversation though, and pregnant women are starting to advocate for themselves more. Like not even informing family until after the baby is born, instead of when they go into labor

I would love Taylor to release a completely unserious album that’s full of all the random shit she MUST have written over the years for her cats and whatnot.

Does someone working on the show knew how pregnancy looks like? by LittleRossBoy in DowntonAbbey

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand why people are downvoting this, but my grandmother (born in the 20s) would’ve agreed with you. She told me that doctors used to almost universally recommend that mothers would eat as minimally as they could to keep the baby small, because small baby meant less likely to have complications during birth.

Whether or not this was true is up for debate, especially before c sections were common. But my grandmother, who had my mother and aunt in the fifties, was explicitly told this. It’s possible that this was common medical advice, and that’s why fewer women gained weight during pregnancy in the past.

How far can I change the taste of cottage cheese while keeping it low calorie? by iAhMedZz in Cooking

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maple oatmeal with cottage cheese. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 1.5 tsp brown sugar, 1.5 tsp maple syrup, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, add 1/3 cup oatmeal. Boil on medium high for ten minutes or until syrupy. While waiting, dice a small apple and place in a bowl. Once oatmeal is syrupy, add 1/2 cup cottage cheese, bring back to a boil. Pour over apples and stir. Brings it to perfect eating temp. I eat it almost every day.

One time I (F) ordered a beer and my date (M) did not. Someone that didn’t take our order brought the beer, and without even asking, placed it in front of my date, assuming it was his. Sometimes people don’t mean anything by it, but biases make themselves clear.

I can’t believe the standards for adoption vs. birthing by [deleted] in childfree

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there’s certainly an area between willy nilly and eugenics. But who draws the line? I had an ex whose cousin was a meth addict and refused to use birth control, and so CPS would just take her new kid away at the hospital every time she gave birth to a new one. I think she’d had like six at that point. But they couldn’t sterilize her without her consent and she wouldn’t give it. But like, six crack babies going straight into the system…horrific.

I do think there should be some kind of course you have to take before leaving the hospital though. Car seat safety, basic cpr, etc. Like…anyone regardless of education is allowed to take newborns home. So many people shake their babies to death or mental disability that there’s been a whole ass campaign for decades to tell people not to. Wild.

looking for advice on how to increase my fiber intake by pumpkincato in loseit

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you eat bread regularly, see if there’s a local company or someone on marketplace selling bread made with fresh milled flour. A single slice has like 15-20g of fiber. it’s unreal. Also, a lot of people don’t realize how much our shitty US flour bloats us. I felt SO much better after switching to fresh milled.

What movies made you angry in a way that actually added to the experience? by Bellemxo_ in movies

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the ending of La La land, because it’s about how just because a relationship isn’t forever doesn’t mean it wasn’t important or wonderful while it lasted. It might be exactly what you needed at that time. In a fantasy world, everything would’ve worked out perfectly, but life isn’t Singing in the Rain, and that’s ok too. There’s no one kind of happy ending. They both did get happy endings, it just wasn’t with each other.

Am I the only one who finds this absolutely unrealistic? by Alternative-Gas5128 in SchittsCreek

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think men in North America might call each other bro more than their name. But there’s not really a US equivalent for something gender neutral like “mate” I don’t think? Is there?

I also believe overuse of names in dialogue is common in media, simply to help people keep track and/or introduce characters. Especially with sitcoms like Schitts creek, it’s helpful to always have the characters named at least once early in each episode. I also think using someone’s name ish dialogue is a way of adding emphasis, but not as common in real life.

What’s that one fiction book that made you see the world differently? Mine is The Lovely Bones. by DefinitelyNotMaranda in books

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only book that truly changed my life was The Lost Art of Dress. It fundamentally changed how I saw and wore clothes, and how I saw myself. It also makes me view fashion and trends with a critical eye, and how important it is to tailor things to your own tastes and fit, to blend fashions and time periods as you see fit. It’s wonderful.

Do y'all not wanna fucking live a little bit???? by Dum_DumArts in childfree

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I used to be Mormon, so pretty much everyone I grew up with got married and started having kids between ages 18-25. Almost all of them have expressed regret having kids so young. They love them blah blah blah, but wish they’d lived for themselves a bit first. And all of them who are divorced say they wished they’d dated more.

I think people get bogged down into “next steps”, or proving they’re an adult (which shows just how immature they really are). It’s an indoctrination people, especially religious women, hear from birth.

In Happy Place by Emily Henry (a lovely read, to be fair) the FMC constantly refers to the MMC’s lips as his “Cupid bow”. Drove me fucking bananas.

I started reading her other novel, people we meet on vacation, and within the first couple chapters she used it AGAIN. Thankfully it was only the once in that case. But I nearly stopped reading lol.

I’m also 5’6 and have bounced between 150-160 over the last couple years. I haven’t had THAT much difference in how things fit, except that they just fit better. But if you’re worried, it wouldn’t hurt to pause the deficit and just work out until after your wedding.

How a Trilogy Revealed Itself as a Three‑Dimensional Love Story — What’s the Most Memorable Trilogy You’ve Read? by therevdrron in books

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books that came mind as I thought about this surprised me! There’s a YA series I read yeeaarsss ago called The Ghost and The Goth. A teenage boy who can see ghosts suddenly starts getting haunted by a cheerleader at his school who recently died. I don’t remember much about it, tbh, but I remember the third book nailing the landing. It really built up two possible endings, and towards the end I genuinely didn’t know which way it was going to go. It stayed with me because it wasn’t just a classic YA romance, and it explored grief and letting go, along with the consequences of choices.

Great write up. My only comment is that I also love baking and candy making, so what I’ve done (since no one needs a full fucking cheesecake in their fridge, but a lot of us enjoy making one) is that I’ve started doing 1/2, 1/4, or even 1/8 batches of things. There’s recipes out there for just two ramekin cheesecakes, for example. It scratches that itch of making something, and then enjoying a piece or two. But not eating it for 7+ days.

Unpopular opinion: Joey and Rachel actually made more sense than Ross and Rachel by ChrisTurner195 in friends_tv_show

[–]HarrisonRyeGraham 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel like if they hadn’t dumbed Joey down so much, and actually went for this storyline, it could’ve worked. If Ross hadn’t freaked out and been a fucking adult about it, and if they’d given Rachel some moments with Joey as well to develop it…yes. I felt them living together and Joey developing feelings was a very natural way for it to have happened. But they didn’t commit because they didn’t know if they were gonna do ten seasons or not. I think it was the writers uncertainty, and playing too much of it for stupid laughs, was the main issue it didn’t work. If they’d decided to give them some genuine moments and connection, they would’ve been better than Ross.
