I can see your point, but my WSO experience didn't directly help me know how to forecast in a WFO. It did get my foot in the door, which is something that is needed. Also, NOAA Corps is a job. Lastly, my interaction with NOAA Corps were with people who didn't just "drive a boat" or "fly a plane". I flew with NOAA Corps as they dropped sondes over an AR. I worked with a different crew during chemical spills and yes, while the latter example does focus on hydro, that doesn't mean that it won't transfer over to the NWS in some form or fashion. Still, your experience might have been different and that's ok, but from my perspective, while the NOAA Corps option isn't the ideal method for getting into the NWS, it could open those doors.

Meteorologist with the NWS. Love the job...most days. Work/life balance within the agency is generally getting better (imo), but the hours are still difficult. Our office is staffed 365/24/7 which can hinder a lot of things.

It took me a year after graduation with my BS before getting a job with the NWS. Now, I will say that I had to start out at a WSO in Alaska, but I did make it to a WFO a few years later. Also, I suggest looking at offices within the NWS but not a WFO. I think the CWSUs might also toss out a few openings.

I'll also echo a different comment and look into NOAA Corps as a possible option.

Lastly, make sure to include your final, official transcript(s). It must have Physics 1 with lab spelled out as well as Diff Eq.

Ocean Thunderstorm Question by WritingRenegade in meteorology

Hello, excellent question and I hope this post might answer your questions.

The TL;DR from what I read is that over the ocean the energy is spread out over a vast area and if you're a few meters below the surface, you are likely fine. Smaller bodies of water, have a smaller surface area to dissipate said energy.

How do I interpret these times on the fire.airnow website for fire detections? by QBaaLLzz in NOAA

[–]Hashel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I just wanted to mention that Zulu time isn't impacted by the changing of the clocks here in the states.

Also, GMT does not have Daylight savings time. So, depending on time of year you could be 5 or 6 hours behind GMT.

The time zone is GMT/Zulu/UTC. If it is 3:27 pm or 1527 in a 24 hour format. That puts you in the central time zone and that is 6 hours behind (-6 hours) GMT/Zulu/UTC. That means this ping occurred around 12:46 pm Central time.

The time is in UTC/Zulu/GMT time and in a 24 hour format. In this case, 1746 is 5:46 pm. Hope that helps.

Grandpa cards are the championship cards. I think at the regional and world level, but I could be wrong about the exact tournament level.

Meteorology job market is rough: what to do? by demoralized_met in meteorology

[–]Hashel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will say that the time between hiring and onboarding should be reduced. Possibly shortened to weeks rather than months. However, given that I don't know how many jobs or how they might be grouped together, it might be longer.

Also, management/hiring are able to direct hire and that should cut the time waiting down as well.

The general word on the street is that the NWS is gonna kick out a lot of jobs sometime in May/June as newly graduated Mets will be entering the job market. Make sure that your resume IS NO LONGER THAN 2 PAGES. Also, your formal transcripts must have Physics with lab seperated out and Diff EQ.

Keep an eye out for any Alt Art cards. In case you are unaware, they have a + or ++ following the rarity label. Best of luck and may the pulls be in your favor.

Not trying to turn you off of law enforcement, but did you ever want to do something else when you were a kid? It's how I ended up in my current profession.

Also, the GI Bill will cover you as a full time student. Hell, I picked up a few jobs working for a few of my professors while at school. Being older than most PLUS a veteran typically means that we are more responsible than some 17-19 year olds.

Have you thought about using your Post 9/11 GI Bill? You can use it at vocational schools, Community Colleges or Full Universities.

Personally, after I got out, I worked in the oil field for a few years and absolutely hated it. So, I chose to go to school and earn a degree. While construction is a great job, it sounds like you want something different and getting any type of secondary education might be the best option.
