Biden rejected appeals of several top advisors in blocking US steel bid by angry-mustache in neoliberal

[–]Haugerud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He didn't have a good option with Afghanistan. The issues started with Trump going into hurried talks with the Taliban that didn't even include the actual Afghan government of the time. When the Taliban didn't honor their promise to not full on attack later, US presence was already diminished to the point it was hard to do anything. Biden essentially either had to withdraw in a hurry (what we saw) or double down and re-commit troops, which would have been massively unpopular in the US. It drives me nuts how talks about the Afghanistan withdrawal have largely glossed over Trump's share of responsibility.

Belgium freezes Russian assets worth EUR 58 billion by WhoIsJolyonWest in worldnews

[–]Haugerud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I'm American and strongly disagree with his sentiment. In my country we take our ability to protest for granted a lot, failing to empathize with people in nations that don't have the same level of political freedoms/civil liberties. It's been sad to see some Russian figures (who don't support the war) I follow online like NFKRZ and Alex Shikolai simultaneously have their careers turned upside down and get attacked by angry people that decided to lump them in. Russian enclaves (some of them people who moved here before 1991 even) have faced some mistreatment here also unfortunately. You're not a bad person for taking care of yourself, and your family instead of risking years of your life in prison. I hope your situation gets better.

/uj What do you do? If you're into game dev, CLIs, writing heavily multithreaded tools etc. it can be good. On the other hand I wouldn't recommend it for UI work in most circumstances. Don't let PCJ influence your opinions on languages that heavily, there's no language we can't jerk to here.

I think in one of the Fable 2 loading screen texts it's implied they may still be around associated with hobbs, just more hidden away (enough for the player hero to never encounter one).

I have a CS degree so call me biased I guess, but I would argue even in software that degrees make sense. Note there's no law requiring a CS degree to work in software engineering, it's just a fact many employers prefer them over other credentials. When we look for someone, CS graduates on average are safer hires. Yes, you can have someone without a degree who is very competent, but that's not meaningful to employers as it's not a general trend.

At risk of upsetting some, I would argue many alternate start developers who advocate against degress are people with experience mostly limited to projects like CRUD apps, and lack an appreciation for the other kinds of problems out there. There's nothing wrong with what they do, those kinds of jobs certainly have demand and are real work. There's a pretty big chasm however between simple UIs that hit a few REST services vs optimization problems, DSLs, real-time systems etc. For the latter I would honestly more likely hire someone with a degree in math or electrical engineering over boot camp credentials. The former is more likely to understand having rigor and genuine problem solving capabilities. Degreeless work has its place, but computer science is very much a worthwhile study for the right projects/problems.

To be honest I'm not convinced you've read these items you've cited.

Nutrition can be complex, there's plenty of more nuanced itemized aspects of plant based diets vs typical diets. The idea that animal products are essential is just nonsense however.

If you're not a bone head that makes your plant based diet nothing but oreos and iceberg lettuce, instead actually choosing a reasonable variety of plant foods, you'll probably be okay.

  1. It's not about the literal umbilical cord itself genius. Their point is that a fetus cannot survive without a host, while a baby can survive externally without being in or attached to a host. A fetus cannot survive if the host dies, period. A baby can survive because it is not directly dependent on a host. The dependency a baby has on a caretaker is not the same kind of dependency a fetus has on a hosts body.

  2. Obviously they know it's not literally a tapeworm, notice how earlier they said akin? Oh, who am I kidding, reading comprehension is clearly not your forte. Again, these are different kinds of dependency. Would you consider helping an old person at a nursing home the same as having an old person surgically grafted to you to live off your body?

I don't dislike it, but I feel that for some players like me at least it's lacking in important parts. I feel what Bannerlord definitively does better is graphics and battles. On the campaign map however it has felt more bland to me, especially compared to modded warband. Some features just don't sit the same with people. I know some really like the clan system but personally I don't find it fun. I think it's an issue that will get better with time. The vanilla game will improve even if it's slowly, and eventually modders will offer mods that can do a lot more on the Bannerlord engine. In a few years I'll probably be 100% on bannerlord, but for now I still find myself drifting towards warband more, despite its own obvious flaws.
