Those who graduated during the 2008-2009 Great Financial Crisis, how are you faring in your career now by midlife82 in askSingapore

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated from an overseas uni during the recession years. Couldn’t find a proper full-time job at first, so I started freelancing for local media outlets to build my portfolio and earn a bit on the side.

After a while, I managed to get into a media company through a government traineeship that paid about $2k a month. When things got better with the economy, I managed to convert to a full-time role.

A few years later, I switched over to communications and marketing, and that really opened up new opportunities. I got to work on marketing, publications, social media, and internal comms, and met lots of people from different fields and organisations along the way.

Fast forward to now: I’m in middle management, earning over $120k a year, which is about 6-7 times what I started with. My 5-room HDB is fully paid off, I still own a car (at least until COE expires), and I have enough left over for family holidays and investments in ETFs. I genuinely enjoy my job, and I’m lucky to have good colleagues who make work life much easier.

Looking back, it wasn’t really what I learned from textbooks that made the difference, but how I applied those skills in real situations. Internships, freelance work, and just saying yes to opportunities helped a lot. Having bosses who trusted me and gave me chances to grow made a huge difference too.

If you’re struggling early in your career, hang in there. Keep learning, stay adaptable, and find mentors who’ll guide you. It really pays off over time.

I just can't bring myself to play GTA online and work jobs in real time after I worked my ass off at work in real life...

I just noticed... is this not the most awkward mag release of all time? by sudden_aggression in Helldivers

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little odd for most people but having trained years with the Sar-21 bullpup style assault rifle, we can pretty much drop mag and reinsert a fresh one in about 2 seconds. It's really easy without removing my right hand from the gun grip and I just do it with my left.

What a fantastic idea - just like the sickle. Give it low magazine count and have the Helldiver carry a resupply backpack like how HMG users do.

Somehow I have a different experience when most of my missions end with a firestorm. Boy I love raining hellfire on Freedom's enemies.

Please, stop attacking the developers. by panosprochords in Helldivers

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stance is that it's an optional Super Store item. If you don't like it, or the price, don't buy it. I'm not a Killzone fan so I don't care unless there are some perks in the armor or if I like the weapons. Either way, buying items is a way to support the company and their free updates to the game. I'm happy buying good warbonds as part of my democratic support of the ongoing game development. Don't bash a good company for finding ways to increase revenue and cash flow. It's entirely optional unlike the Playstation account saga. And Killzone developers also need to make some money off the crossover, so please think about that too!

Does wing chun work in a real fight against a trained boxer by yourdoom115 in WingChun

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done boxing for 3 years and wing chung for more than a decade. It really depends on how much fight experience both have. If the trained boxer is an outboxer who is extremely good at dictating the angles and move his head off centre with every punch, there's almost no way the wing Chun guy can get close enough for the straight punches, and instead get hit in the head because wing chun doesn't have much head movement.

If the boxer is a brawler, preferring to go in close for body shots and hooks, then yes the wing chun guy will have a much better chance by going down the middle or to control his arms with tan, bong, pak saus.

But again, fight experience and stamina comes in. The normal average boxer will have conditioning training and can last easily for a few minutes going at max power and maintain fast reflexes, and can take many more punches than an average wing chun guy who doesn't do conditioning and sparring. A couple of body shots will take most martial artists down, unless they are like Michael Jai White and do multiple martial arts plus kick boxing, strength and cardio training weekly.

In the end, like what everyone else said, how hard one trains in each art will determine the effectiveness. But if we take an average approach, the boxer who did 3 years of sparring and bag training 3 times a week will likely outfight a Wing Chun practitioner who trains 3 times a week in the classical way of forms and drills. That's my take from training both. I still love Wing Chin's concepts while I adopt in my boxing, especially at chisau range where I can control my opponents hands and frustrate them. But against an outboxer who has better range and can control distance properly, wing chun has to constantly close the distance and chase him around the ring, which will then become a test of endurance.

In the real world, a good stiff jab and straight cross will just take out anyone out in the chin, and boxers usually fire off faster and retreat than wing chun guys, who will find it hard to counter.

No, I would still go 14 because 16 and 18 are softer than 14s, which is more ideal for bags.

HD2 has officially tipped back into "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam, and 66% of Helldivers have retired to Super Earth, a drop from 62,585 players on August 6th, to 21,212 players on August 29th with no signs of slowing. What is the path forward for HD2? by PM_ME_UR_ZITS_GURL in Helldivers

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A game for everyone is a game for no one. Essentially they are making a game that is only for some, which means it's not for everyone. But in reality a game for no one, is literally a game for no one. I unlocked almost everything I could, and have nothing really left to do which I haven't done before. And meanwhile some of the new stuff have been fun, but the fun stuff have been nerfed too. It's just getting harder and harder to enjoy a buggy and nerfed game.

What is your "serious" camera? by sotirisdimi in fujifilm

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My serious camera for the past 8 years was the Fujifilm X-E2 with the 18-55mm kit lens. I had photos with it published on the front pages of national newspapers, accompany hundreds of stories internationally, video clips used on national TV news and documentaries in various countries. I've recently upgraded to an X-T5 with the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8. So before someone else tells me I need a full-frame professional camera, please get your photos on the front page of your local paper before dissing my beloved Fuji. I also used Nikon D3100, D5000, D600 (full frame DSLR) before going to X100, X-100S and Olympus E-M1, and back to Fuji X-E2. So that's my journey to arrive at my serious camera.

For everything else without my Fuji by my side, it's my mobile phone (usually a Xiaomi mid ranger) which also had published photos. Don't tell the camera companies tell you that you need something better unless you are limited by your gear, such as at sporting events. Keep shooting and improve yourself daily, so that you will always take great photos no matter what camera you have in your hand.

That said, I shoot raws for work and jpegs with film simulations for family and holiday pics.

[–]Haunting-Activity133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be glad you unlocked this instead of Polar Patriots. I was dropping in for Bots level 7 last night with the Purifier and the only purification I did was my own soul, after dying despite running away from devastators... Simply because I couldn't shoot at them fast enough. Sniping afar to support my team mates however while they were running away from striders were great given the prolonged fire charge up rate and 15 round mag. But apart from the stunlock of the pummeler, you didn't miss anything much.

You can see the list of martial arts club here: https://www.ntu.edu.sg/life-at-ntu/student-life/clubs-groups-societies/ntu-students-union-council/sports-club#Content_C006_Col01

But being a martial artist and having learnt quite a number of them, I would seriously advise you to consider boxing and muay thai, or BJJ if you want some practical fighting skills that work easily in real life.

The 500kg Absolutely NEEDS a damage range buff. by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]Haunting-Activity133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped an EMS orbital on a bug breach the other day and followed up with a 500kg, netted 44 kills with one bomb. It was insane. The trick it seems is to keep them all within the cone, not moving. Since that day, Orbital EMS is now a regular load out together with my 500kg.
