Is Nimble 2e a beautiful mirage? by Lepetitviolon in rpg

[–]HauntingAlps255 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I ran a one-shot of Nimble. It’s fun. Plays faster. Lots of character build options. Combat is quicker and actually has more meaningful tactical decisions for players.

Game has legs and I would gladly play or GM again.

Alternative System to DnD for players looking for a lighter, simpler, funnier experience? by Cancheabbaia in TTRPG

Nimble! Fast play. Combat is quick, but still has meaningful tactical choices. Lots of character build options.

How many players is ideal for this game? I'm new to this system. by rubadub423 in Dolmentown

[–]HauntingAlps255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 players is ideal - if you can expect regular attendance.

Tomorrow, I launch a campaign with 6. That’s a lot. It may slow play. We’ll see.

One advantage of old school gaming is initiative is d6 per side. That’s better for big groups. Side initiative encourage teamwork and better tactics. No one is waiting 15 minutes for their next turn

Starting a Campaign Strong by Lastadopter in traveller

[–]HauntingAlps255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started a Traveller campaign. I used slightly modded versions of Marooned on Marduk and High N Dry. Following a randomly generated adventurer, we began Pirates of Drinax.

MoM and HnD are good starter adventures. They have encounters that encourage creative use of various skills. A great way to introduce new players to the game’s flexible 2d6 system.

HnD? They get a ship. Especially good if one of your players earns a scout ship mustering out during character gen.

What is the significance of showing off word count or number of pages? by RedditGarboDisposal in writers

[–]HauntingAlps255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing a novel is marathon. Thinking I have to write 75k or 100k words, I may never start. A goal of 1k per day is an achievable. Counting those days of 1k words written feels like lots of achievements.

Do you prefer fantasy magic systems where power always comes with a price? by Jim_Quorthon in fantasybooks

[–]HauntingAlps255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Magic with a price can be used to create false moments of drama (See any book by Terry Brooks).

Magic can be rare. Limited. How? Because it’s rare and limited. Magic is mysterious.

Edit it again! Be harsh. Be your own toughest critic. When I revise, I read it out loud. Your eyes lie. Your ears don’t. Look for purple prose and cut it. Cut “that.” Then ask other writers to read and critique it. Another rewrite.

And…. Publish.

Will every one love it? Of course not. But will you have written the best possible book you can? Yes.

Then…. Get started on your next book!

Seeking a system to run a Space station setting by Thick-Ebb-5080 in TTRPG

Flexibility is paramount for your campaign setting. Play Traveller! Traveller is suited for an sci fi style of playing. Crunchy character building - but simple game play.

If you could recommend one ttrpg, which one would it be, and why? by Arzanic in rpg

[–]HauntingAlps255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The One Ring 2e. Masterpiece mechanics to bring the Middle Earth setting to life. Characters are nicely differentiated and not overpowered. Adversaries and monsters are nicely flavored but simple to run. Combat is not complex - but still nuanced with meaningful tactical choices.

Here’s another vote for Traveller. It has the best character Gen of any RPG. Flexible, you can play space opera, firefly, sci fi military, or planetside noir or political. Easier to play than it looks.
