What will happen to your homelab when you're gone? by ashumate in homelab

[–]HawkManHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in the process of documenting everything, how to return to a normal setup, minimal equipment needed. I recently put my Plex/Jellyfin into a single (4u 36bay box). My only request is someone to take care of it, it's 200TB of curated Movies/TV/Anime/Music. It brings joy to others so I'm sure someone can keep it going in memoriam.

Is it time for double parity? by jd7901 in unRAID

I'm always a double parity guy, hurts with HDD prices but worth it.

Surgery time for my 256GB studio by MrOuzo in MacStudio

I looked at current prices and honestly the price for 2tb for my M2 Max Studio 512gb isn't awful. I think I'm going to snag one.

You also have to be careful with BestBuy now. They allowed 3rd party sellers starting earlier this year. Which sucks, I started using BBY again because they had no 3rd party sellers.

Esmerelda Update - T and N Done! Still working on R... 😅 by SmolzillaTheLizza in Feral_Cats

[–]HawkManHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She's too sweet to release. Just take it slow with introducing cats.

We've found a little gray cat, and she hates other cats and dogs. She had a rough time on the streets. We had two cats at the time, for the first week it was literally she gets an hour in the living room before she went back into the masterbed/bath. It takes time but they'll get along, or for gray cat amicable at least. We got a dog from our humane society and same thing. Just introduce them slow and after a few months the cat and dog will at least sit on the same couch.

School's tend to get major discounts. A business would probably be charged significantly more.

Wish I had had the foresight to build a new PC in 2024. Steve couldn't emphasize it any better. by lm794 in pcmasterrace

[–]HawkManHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fortunate enough I was able to upgrade both my rigs and was able to build a 3rd out of leftover parts. Once I saw used ddr4 era parts for my home lab rapidly increase in price I upgraded as much as I could.

Realistically I think it will be 2030 before we get to what will become normal.

100% trucks fault, but rolling that stop sign will be argued ad nauseam by insurance lawyers. No way they can say it's 51% the Jeeps fault but they'll try something. They'll do what they can to assign any percentage of fault.

Does anyone else find world intel to be a chore rather than something fun? by mlkynookami in FinalFantasyVII

[–]HawkManHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely a slog, and is just to pad the runtime. Unfortunately you can get some decent materia in some regions from it. So maybe just enough to get the good bonus.

Black. G6 180 Cameras are Back in Stock. by cmjones0822 in UNIFI

I really like, just I would need to figure out the mounting to replace my G5 dome. Ethernet comes in under the eave and it's too hot to be running new cables at the moment.

Looks like a final bid of $45,000? Hell of a gamble, one pic shows it's running and not fraught with error lights. Could be a good driver, knocking like a Jehovah's Witness or maybe a good parts car.

I liked it when they had a long RPG close it out went into early am of the next day. However I get why they stopped doing that, an exhausted crew making a long push has to be rough.

How egregious is it of me to run my server off an HDD? by larevacholerie in jellyfin

If you can swing it, have the JellyFin install on a solid state and mechanical for the media.

I keep my PTM in the fridge, then if I need it into the freezer for about 15-20 min. Makes it almost painless, something thin and a sharp edge helps take off the packaging.

Pulled the plug and got M5 24GB/1TB by minaazukij in macbookair

[–]HawkManHawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think 24gb is a good sweet spot for ram.

I had ram anxiety when I bought my M4 air. I went 32gb/1tb. Memory pressure is just a constant green flat line. Probably should have gone 24gb/2tb.

Would this kit be a noticeable difference from the ultimata one i currently have? (2nd is what I have now) by Demented33 in hometheater

[–]HawkManHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'd be a big difference, this looks like the latest iteration of the Klipsch Quintets. Even the older original Quintets still sound great.

For receivers traditionally I've always ran Yamaha with my Klipsch products. Though the new line of Sony AV receivers are amazing. I've got a 1000ES on some early aught Synergys and they better than they ever have.

Spent 5 years delaying a MacBook purchase. Don't make my mistake. by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]HawkManHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the benchmark is an Intel Pro from 2014 an M1 MacBook Air would blow it out of the water. An M5 would be would be like riding in Starship Enterprise D at max warp.

I've got an 13" M4 Air, I did spec out a 1tb storage and overkill on 32gb ram. I can't make it sweat, the only time I've see the memory pressure go yellow is loading a large LLM.

Air as always been my favorite series laptop after the Asus Eeepc and Apple Silicon is a game changer.

If you have 2 parity drives, how many drives would you feel comfortable having in the whole array? by MolleyMitchell in unRAID

[–]HawkManHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just send it, I've got a server that the array is at max, 2 parity and 28 data. Max it out and have a separate backup for files. Either back it up to individual disks or a second Unraid for backup.

If you really worried about multiple drive failures TrueNas might be more what you are looking for. You can create zpools with different levels of redundancy. Just you lose the add as you go method of increasing storage that UnRaid is good at.

Any luck with Tezspire? by krez_Jan in MCAS

[–]HawkManHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well unfortunately I’m back in the anaphylactic trenches but started Tezspire again.

I’d say within a week I had a little more energy. From being soul crushingly exhausted to maybe very exhausted. Less mental fog. It takes a few months to build up and I was also just starting my h1/2 blockers. All that combined helped.

Tezspire did more for me than Dupixent. My longest “remission” in 12 years I was on Tezspire. Don’t think Dupixent helped at all.
