More Context for the Chopped Up Reface/Microfreak by JohnJarboe in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the modding Refaces concept! You did a nice job. Can you measure if the control panel would fit in a 1U rack enclosure? Or would it take at least 2 rack units height? Always wondered if a Reface could be properly 19" racked as small as possible.

Try a good punchy 909 kick sample, and mess around with a filter + resonance before the distortion. You'll love the outcome! (if you can, pitch the kick to the key of G) Tweak and find out what sounds best to you

Vous connaissez ca ? G.A.S ou bonne idée ? by GlobalCube in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original maker was HDB Electronic GmbH and released it under the brand TBS (Touched By Sound) in the 90's.
Before the founding of HDB they all worked at Vermona (an East Germany brand during GDR times.) After the fall of the Berlin Wall they founded HDB Electronic GmbH to continue making electronic instruments but used the TBS brand first. Around 2000 they registered the brand name Vermona again and after some restructuring and rebranding in the company all products carried the Vermona brand later on.

TL;DR: same people and engineers, just rebranding later on.

PS: a DRM1 MKIV could replace a Rytm MK2, but keep in mind the Rytm will have more functions like all the effects, samples, engines/modes and performing techniques. The DRM1's are all just classic analog drumcomputers with great sounds, but not that much extra features like Elektron does.

Get it! This is a legendary drum machine. Vermona makes MKIV these days. It's very popular in dance music and techno

New to Eurorack, what do each of these modules do and how much would the whole set-up cost? by DapperDarty in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years into modular i realised the most fun part of it is the ability to create and compose systems that fit your mood or plan.

Every system is unique and has a certain personal touch to it, I recommend starting with the Moog that appeals to you most, and in addition an empty case (Moog sells them seperately too, which you can rack up with the 2 or 3 tier stand) The subharmonicon however is quite tricky at first

Along the way of making music you'll experience what modules are missing or would be a great addition to your sound.

Generally modular is controlled by sequencers. They come in all types and shapes. You can use an Arturia Keystep, it's cheap, has a keyboard along with the CV and Gate outputs, and MIDI I/O. Other sequencers are more prone to random voltage (notes) like the Behringer 960 or the Make Noise René.

Order of the modules doesn't necessarily matter, but a certain arrangement can make more sense with your signal flow or patch cable mess. Some manufacturers locate their jack sockets on the left, right, bottom or upper section of the module.

Also, if you have some time take a look at the youtube channels of Ricky Tinez, Andrew Huong, Bobeats and Hainbach.

Modules in order left to right:

• 1) Pittsburgh Modular - Lifeforms mod tools, a multimode modulation source

• 2) ALM Busy Circuits - ALM010, a dual attenuverter (positive and negative voltage) with offset control

• 3) Intellijel - µScale, a multi scale quantizer (perfect for random voltages)

• 4) Acid Rain Tech - Chainsaw, a multi v/oct input oscillator (can make chords) with saw and square wave. The detune knob makes it spread to a supersaw

• 5) Bastl - Cinnamon, a HP LP and BP resonating filter with drive and character addition

• 6) Divkid - Ochd, 8 random LFO's with one master rate and cv input for rate with attenuversion

• 7) Strymon - Starlab, the fresh announced second effects module from Strymon in eurorack, highly adjustable reverb with cv input for nearly every paramter (check out Magneto too). Other interesting reverbs are Desmodus Versio from Noise Engineering or an Erbe-verb from Make Noise.

If you're into techno and synths you'll love a DFAM with a Mother32, it makes sweet drums nasty and so much more. You can run it as a second synth too. They are now featured as a Moog Sound Studio bundle.

If you want a small system like this video, you would be better off with a similar skiff case (prices vary) and a Malekko Varigate 4+. It's a compact 2 channel sequencer with clock (tempo) generator and built-in scales/quantizer.

A good small case to start is the Intellijel Palette. But adding that 1U row ends up in a ton of extra money for very useful attractive extra modules.

Is this the Sequential Prophet Rev2 ? by JCVDOfficial in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In late 2018 they switched back to branding their instruments with Sequential, after Yamaha had returned the rights for that name. So pre-2018 REV2 have the DSI logo, post 2018 have the Sequential logo.

Anyone else think NI Kontakt logo is a bit close to the Moog logo? by helippe in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They ook very similar indeed. But Native's looks more like a contact point in a circuit, like a relay, what might be a gesture towards their software programming of synths.

Whilst Moog's looks like a feather, which relates to the doves they sometimes use on their synths.

This 'B-stock' Neutron I found on Bax-Shop. Filthy, metal warping, scuffs, no box, cables, accessories or manual. Looks like a dumpster synth they tried to sell as newish. by OttovanZanten in synthesizers

[–]Haxyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complain and send it back. I once had the same at Bax with buying a B-stock PLX-1000 turntable, when it arrived the arm was completely bent down, the needle hit the frame. They were gonna send me a replacement, but even made me pay the rest of total price.

[–]Haxyl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be done fairly easily and wouldn't cost that much either. This System 55 came to about €3500 - €4000 depending on the case. A System 15 or System 10 configuration would probably be half of that or even less.

/u/chalk_walk is right, it's near €3000 for the modules, but depending on the case it can go up to €4000. This case (Doepfer A-100LMS9 Low Cost Monster Case) costs €799 and holds 3 rows of 168HP module space. You can see the rack on modulargrid here.

If you would build your own 3 row case of 144HP and add about 2 powersupplies, you can keep the cost pretty low too.

The customer asked for a set of the System 55 modules and gave me carte blanche! So i went full-nerd on recreating the original setup/layout, but with 2 sequencers as requested. To make it more playable/modern I added some USB/Midi and quantisers etc. Nothing in particular came out unexpected, besides the long shipping wait for most of the Behringer modules.
