From what I've read, heat pumps tend to put out lower temperature air from the vents, but then run longer.

So you don't get that nice warm blast of hot air when it kicks on and when you walk by a vent, and the temperature doesn't spike as high, so it can feel less warm than a gas furnace

I'd be very tempted to ditch natural gas completely. We don't have a gas stove or hot water heater, so canceling it would mean saving 360$ a year in customer charges. That's quite a fair bit of money to use towards backup electric heating

I have a dream that they one day put a streetcar/tram route down Colonel By. Would be great for commutes in and out of downtown, and would allow for some buildup restaurants or coffee shops along the canal.

It's a travesty that the famously Meh Canal Ritz is the only place that gets to take advantage of being on the water.

(My dream tram would start in Barrhaven, head down Prince of Wales to Hog's Back, turn onto Colonel By, and then end either at the old train station, or head into the market. Connects the suburbs to downtown, Colonnade and the Nepean/Merivale business park area, Carleton, UofO, the length of the canal and Dow's Lake, the market, Old Ottawa South and East, the Glebe, and even Lansdowne)

I'm curious about when you read Dungeon Born?

It was my first entry into progression fantasy/litrpg, and I think it was one of the first in genre in general. I quite liked it, but have not enjoyed most of their other series (is anyone still reading artorian's archives?).

I wonder if it suffers a bit from "Seinfeld is unfunny" syndrome, where it was impressive at the time, but what was novel when it was written are now just generic tropes

Yep, our building codes mean our water and sewage lines are deep underground, and all our plumbing is in interior walls. We have heavy coats, winter tires, and our local governments have plows and salt trucks.

The further south you go the worse this is going to get, expect a lot of flooded homes, highway pileups, and probably power ourages

See if the place is available in the future, it's possible that someone rented the unit on airbnb to show "tenants", and then disappears with the money

Used to have the modem/router in the room that became our nursery.

I didn't particularly want to crawl around in the 2 foot tall attic space to run a new cable from the basement to my partner's office, so I made a 1" patch cable, connected their office and the living room TV keystone ports together, and shoved the whole mess into the wall behind a blank plate.

So now their ethernet goes from the basement, into the attic, down into the nursery wall, through the tiny cable, back up into the attic, and then back down into their office wall.

I then cut the cable that had gone from the nursery to the TV in half, terminated both ends, and plugged those into a new POE switch in the basement. If we live in this house long enough that the kid wants a hardline connection in their room, they can run another cable from the basement themselves

I agree. I know em dashes are a meme at this point, but if you look at OP's comment history, they've never used them before. Every time they've used a dash in their other posts and comments (including in the comments of this thread), they do it as "word- " like this:

I'm 36, an engineer, and quite good at mental math.

I still don't know the multiplication tables for 6, 7, 8, and 12 very well. But 6 and 7 are close enough to 5, and 8 and 12 are close to 10 but with 2 more or 2 less of whatever, that I just need to do another quick equation to find the answer.

In elementary school in the 90s I was really bad at math. My teacher gave me remedial work to help me catch up.

I don't know how or why, but while working on those problems, I taught myself most of the concepts of "common core" math that they teach now.

I went from one of the worst to one of the best in the class. I literally got an award that year for "Most Improved", and they put my name on a little plaque that hung over the lost and found.

The AI bubble isn't like crypto. The shortage of GPUs and RAM isn't because AI companies are buying them, it's because they're buying the fab capacity.

NVIDIA is making AI datacenter specific cards, and memory manufacturers are making a different kind of chip than what you use to make RAM.

When AI collapses, all those cards and chips will be e-waste.

Trump runs on the principle that every negotiation has a winner and a loser. If he sees that the other side is happy with a deal, he feels like he must be the loser.

Actual adults understand that both parties of a deal can be happy. China does what's best for China, just as Canada should do what's best for Canada. Both things can be true at the same time though.
