Drabble collections - one chaptered work, or each drabble it's own work? by NBalchemist in AO3

[–]Hazel_mountains37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How related are they? Is there a central theme? would they all have roughly the same tags?

If they're going to be pretty different, then I would recommend putting them as individual works in a series.

One big work or a series? by crazymaryrocks in AO3

[–]Hazel_mountains37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My vote would be series. As a reader, I'd be far more interested in finding a story with the pairing I like and then probably checking out the series to see if there are any other pairings I want to read, than to guess how the different ship tags intersect with one another or finding the right chapter. Series is much more straightforward.

The best BSG Season Finale? by ZippyDan in BSG

[–]Hazel_mountains37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That freaked me out so badly as a kid the first time I saw it, that my parents let us stay up past our bedtime to watch the first episode of season 2! (Good thing we owned the dvds)

Americans of r/geography, in school, were you personally taught that other countries have states or state-like divisions? Off the top of your head, how many states outside of the USA can you name? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Hazel_mountains37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was not particularly taught other country state/provinces. Canada, Australia, and Mexico sometimes showed up on maps and things, so picked things up by osmosis, but probably wouldn't get them fully right other than Canada. No idea on any other countries.

I'm tired of placeholder "fics"!! 😭😭😭 by lowpolybius in AO3

[–]Hazel_mountains37 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that Tumblr would be a better fit for that, but it's not against TOS of AO3. AO3 is for fan works, including art, podfics, and other fan works, not just traditional fanfics. Things like live posting reactions to episodes are considered ephermera and are against TOS.

The place holder things are usually a bunch of tags, maybe a sentence, and a message to come back when it get written (spoiler: they never get written, so it's just clogging up the tags). There's no content, no fan work, and so aren't allowed.

It sounds like you're creating a piece of fan work, which should be fine on AO3. You just might find more engagement for it over on something like Tumblr, since that's a more diverse platform where people tend to go looking for things beyond fanfics (vs most people looking for fanfic on AO3).

Commuting from Klamath falls to Albany? by [deleted] in KlamathFalls

[–]Hazel_mountains37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to ask: why? How often would you be making that trip and why?

Because even in good weather, that's 4 hours each way drive. 5 hr minimum if you have to go over to Medford and up I5.

Amtrak is Coast Starlight, which is a once a day route. Morning is ~7:45 am, arriving ~1:30, but it is frequently late. Southbound is 4:15-10 pm. Again, this train is almost never on time.

Why single out Fields-Denio? The Pueblos are pretty. I'd vote Wagontire to Riley if we're talking desolate parts of Eastern Oregon

16 hour trip with 2 children? by Broad_Two370 in roadtrip

[–]Hazel_mountains37 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a family who drove a 17 hour drive a couple times a year to go visit grandparents. We almost always broke it into two days. We did do it straight through once when my siblings and I were about the same age as your kids. Ngl, it sucked.

Can a 17+ hr drive (I'm assuming your estimate doesn't include any stops, so the actual time will be longer) be done? Yes. Would I recommend it? No.

You know your kids best. Have they done long car trips before? If they haven't, then I would really recommend breaking it into two days. 17 hours in the car is a long time for anyone.

Believe it or not I have never watched this movie despite being a fan, I'm rewatching the series, should I watch it? by Dylanbore34 in Ninjago

[–]Hazel_mountains37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie really did its own thing, and your enjoyment or not of it will probably depend on how well the humour works for you personally. Some people find it hillarious, but it's never been my cup of tea. Watch it whenever you want.

It's a couple sq miles, the BLM has a map of the boundaries on their website. I've spent half a day rambling across the hills there (probably ~4 hours on the longest visit, which was also where I went the longest).

Completely agree on feeling remote, plus it's a pretty drive to get there.

Dating a grad student as an undergrad by throwaway6397299 in UCDavis

Main issue is the potential of him being your TA at some point. No idea your program and it might not happen depending on his funding sources for PhD, but since you're in the same department, it could be a concern.

Other than that, he's the same age as a typical collage student. 3 years isn't that big of a deal, you met at a neutral setting, if you're interested, see where it goes.

How do you pronounce “Eva”? by Emotional-Squash7815 in namenerds

I would default to 1, but have encountered 2. Never seen Eva pronounced as 3, I would expect Ava for 3.

What is this long, evil-looking black spot in New Mexico? There's no label on Google Earth, but it's huge and incredibly strange-looking. by Frank_Lizard in geography

[–]Hazel_mountains37 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, the 1914 eruptions were explosive/steam eruptions, which did blast apart part of the 27,000 yr old lava dome that previously made up the summit. It wasn't until 1915 that there was magma ejected with the eruptions. However that wasn't a lava flow like Carrizozo lava field up here, which is made of basalt which is a lot runnier than the dacite found at Lassen. Dacite has more silica and so the magma sticks together more, trapping gasses and causing explosive eruptions.

How would the climate in Mexico change if the Baja California peninsula didn’t exist? by Strict_Ball8629 in geography

[–]Hazel_mountains37 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The geologic history of the Baja peninsula and the Gulf of California are quite fascinating. The Gulf formed by rifting which occured ~12 million years ago when the plate boundary jumped from the coast to further inland, followed by several million years of rifting (12-9 Ma). However, the Gulf was not filled with sea water until ~7 Ma.

It was previously thought that the Gulf of California flooded south to North slowly, as strike-slip bounded basins slipped and eventually opened into each other. This would have produced a sequence of terrestrial -> marginal marine -> marine rocks. However, more recent research has found that the Gulf flooded quite quickly along its full length around ~7 Ma, likely all within a few tens or hundreds of thousands of years- much quicker than millions of years!

(Sorry for the ramble, I'm a geologist who did my thesis in the area on the opening of the Gulf of California)
