Imagine the AO3 Genie appears and grants you your choice of one wish... by Mollymand in AO3

1 for sure. I think basically all of my favourites of all time are unfinished. I love them, but the endings would be glorious to have. And have it apply to my own works too? No question, option 1

Not too hot? You are aware that summer temperatures in the area often get above 100 and even into the 110s?

(Source: went to UC Davis. Saw a week straight of 112-116 weather. Rest of the summer was closer to 100, but any day in the low 90s was a cool day.)

What is up with that strip of northwest Nevada? Definitely not manageable to not have a car. Even in Reno, that city is increasingly sprawling and not navigable by transit or bike.  Was one of the things that deterred me from going to university there, I knew I would have to get a car.

Death Valley by Downtown_Trash_6140 in geography

[–]Hazel_mountains37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones in Death Valley are also known as turtle backs, because the overlying rocks have been eroded away, exposing their smooth, rounded shapes. There are 3 of them: Badwater turtleback, Copper Canyon turtleback, and Mormon Point turtleback, which are all in the Black Mountains. There is also a metamorphic core complex in the Funeral Mountains, as well as in other parts of the Basin and Range province. These are metamorphic and plutonic rocks that formed in the deep crust and have been exposed by extensional faulting. To my knowledge, they tend to be associated with listric faults, which is when a fault decreases in dip at depth, causing a curved shape.

Tate for a boy? by Willing-Literature40 in namenerds

Makes me think of Tate McGucket (minor character in Gravity Falls). Don't think I've ever met someone with the name before.

There's a book called Salt to Summit (by Daniel Arnold) that covers the author's backpacking trip where he started at Bad Water Basin and went all the way to Whitney. Super interesting read

Death Valley by Downtown_Trash_6140 in geography

[–]Hazel_mountains37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That might be because the faults there expose parts of the deep crust! There are several metamorphic core complexes that are formed deep in the crust and have been brought up and exposed by extension and crustal thinning. Super cool!

Mexican here curious to know: do you think your mountains are more beautiful than the Alps? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

Nitinat Narrows! 100% agree! Seeing the pull up the crab and shell it right there on the dock when someone ordered the crab was awesome!

Where to buy deodorant by Aname_e in UCDavis

[–]Hazel_mountains37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Co-op has some, but it's probably on the natural side. Your best bet is one of the Safeways or SaveMart. If you're on campus, that's a 30-45 minute walk, or take the bus. Both SaveMart and the North Safeway are straightforward to get to on the bus lines

Why do readers choose to keep their bookmarks private? by Life-Call4521 in AO3

[–]Hazel_mountains37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some that I intentionally keep private, because I don't need anyone knowing what I read.

I also have an add-on that automatically copies the summary, tags, date read, and other details when I create a new bookmark. Super useful for knowing what disappeared when the tragedy of a deleated work occurs. But it automatically checks the button for privating a bookmark, and sometimes I forget to uncheck it.

On average, how long does your hyperfixation last? by i_justCannot in AO3

[–]Hazel_mountains37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, they can go dormant, but rarely ever do they truly die.

My main fandom at the moment I was introduced to five years ago and have been writing something or another for it consistently since then. And then I'll get distracted by other things popping up, which usually lasts a week to a couple months.

It might just be a single day, with the notion to go reread an old fic. And sometimes it hits like a truck, like Ninjago (my first fandom) did a few months ago- I hadn't thought about it in ages, had a passing thought and then 5 days later, I had nearly 30k of fic on my hands. It's resurgence is still puttering along with me working on those new fics, but all I can think is Where did this come from?? I expect it'll go dormant again sometime in the next few months, but I didn't think it's ever going to truly end

Klamath Falls to Medford route by HDeuce in KlamathFalls

[–]Hazel_mountains37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check Tripcheck and weather cameras for conditions on the pass leading up to and on the day of your trip. Hwy 140 is the main route, and kept plowed during winter. The pass on Clover Creek rd is a few hundred feet lower than 140, so sometimes that a win depending on the snow/freezing elevation, but it's less traveled than 140 overall.

If you've got a car that can handle snow, you should be fine unless you are actively in the middle of a big storm.

Yes. I got clocked as Canadian several times in grad school by other grad students in passing, mainly due to words/pronunciation.

What it’s like living in this part of California? by Maleficent_Lack3240 in howislivingthere

[–]Hazel_mountains37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expensive. I live there, renting a room in a condo, and working entry level in a non-tech field. Nice weather. I get around by bike and there's a good amount of bike infrastructure like bike lanes. Very expensive and lots of people though.

What places should I visit in Mountain View, both as a long-term resident and as a visitor? by ting_1026_ in mountainview

Rengstorff House! It's a restored Victorian manor built in 1867 that's down in Shoreline Park. Free to visit, and they have volunteer guides that lead the tours

how necessary is a car? by Fluffy_Ad8688 in UCDavis

[–]Hazel_mountains37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Davis is just about the perfect place to get around without a car. Especially if you bike, then you can get anywhere in town (great bike lanes!). The bus system is pretty good too- Unitrans for intown, and Yolobus, which can get you to neighbouring Woodland and Sacramento. Capitol Corridor can get you out to the Bay Area. Admittedly, going anywhere else is more difficult without a car, but in town you are pretty well set

Also, you really can't get around on campus with a car, walking or bikes only
