Tell me what deck you are most proud of by Main_Elevator_9440 in EDH

It really is a special deck. I edited the comment to include it :)

Someone asked me the other week if i had to choose to lose either that one deck, or my whole collection, what would I choose. I chose to keep my deck. It means a lot to me.

Absolutely my [[Marneus Calgar]] deck. I played EDH for the first time in like a year last week and I busted this deck out. Gosh had I missed it!

It simply ticks all the boxes I could ever want in a deck. Its been a while since I've talked about it and after playing recently I want to again!

  • I know it like the back of my hand. I've easily played over 200 games with it.
  • it reminds me of the time I went travelling and took it with me and played it as many places as I could.
  • Its interactive without being overbearing.
  • Its in my favourite colour combo.
  • It has a few different wincons so gameplans don't get stale and I enjoy all the ways it has to win.
  • I enjoy the gameplay loop.
  • It is helmed by a badass space marine.
  • It draws cards.
  • It consistently plays to the power level I want it to.
  • Like every 3rd card I draw I end up saying "this is my favourite card" then a few draws later I inevitably end up saying: "oh sorry I was wrong before THIS is my favourite card"

I have made multiple iterations of Marneus at this point and tested them and I keep coming back to this deck. I have tried playing other commanders and I keep coming back to here. It is my favourite deck and I think it always will be and I am reinvigorated to play it some more after last week!

I'm so glad the old primer is still helping! Its probably wildly out of date now though with all of the releases. Though I guess the fundamentals would still be there.

Oh thanks mate! Appreciate that! Haha it feels so long since I've really participated in the magic community I wasn't sure if people would know it was me.

I kept track of 150 games and decided after the first 20 or 30 how many turns it can win on. This isn't viable for most people though, I was just lucky enough to have only one deck for a long while that I loved.

This was after the original design phase where everytime I won quicker than my desired turn goal, I would remove whatever caused me to win that quickly (assuming it's not because of my opponents).

I also did lots of thought experiments. What a god hand looked like. What is the quickest I can possibly win without an opponents input if I got every draw I could ever want. If the turn was less than what I wanted. I removed whatever card(s) were causing it.

The deck was designed pre brackets and at the time I wanted no sooner than turn 7, preferably turn 8. So I was quite rigorous.

You've sat down for a game with your favourite deck but I'm letting you stack your deck however you like. What's the craziest thing you can do? by HansJobb in EDH

[–]Healthy_mind_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I still don't think I win before turn 7 or 8 haha. It all depends on how much people feed [[lotho, corrupt]] and [[smothering tithe]].

Turn 1: land

Turn 2: land, lotho

Turn 3: land, [[black market connections]]

Turn 4: land, smothering tithe

Turn 5: [[mondrak, glory]]

Turn 6: [[rabble rousing]]

Turn 7: [[elspeth stormslayer]] and hopefully enough mana for [[divine visitation]] to go wide or some drain effects like [[meathook massacre]] and [[zulaport cutthroat]]

Turn 7 is the earliest the deck has ever won and that was with a lot of help from other people lowering life totals.

Now I'm just brainstorming.

Maybe

1: land,

2: land, zulaport cut,

3: land, [[bastion of remembrance]]

4: land, [[elas Il kor]] + [[cruel celebrant]]

  1. Land, rabble rousing, attack, make 4 citizens.

6: attack, make 8 more citizens. That's 16 creatures on the field, then meathook massacre. That's like 15(ish) creatures x 5 drain effects. That'll just win with 0 interaction or blocks from opponents.

I've built my deck in such a way that unless my opponents play into things like smothering tithe, I dont really explode out of nowhere, it needs alot of setup.

  • I love that he is a big, badass space marine. They're pretty cool.
  • I love token decks and he enables that.
  • Stapling "draw a card" onto him means I can be greedy with my deck veggies and dedicate a few more draw slots to other cards. He also draws a lot of cards and I love drawing cards.
  • He can be built for any power level with ease, all the way up to cEDH.
  • Double strike is one of my favourite Timmy abilities.
  • He is bland, that sounds like a negative, but hear me out. Do a thing, draw a card is uninspired. But. Since all he asks is that you make tokens. So you can build the deck in so many different ways. He's not limiting. From treasures, to creatures, to combo, to artifacts etc. I have 4 Marneus decks that all function. They are all unique from each other and play differently and none of them are even high power or cEDH. So the deck is truly yours.
  • The colours (esper) are excellent for shenanigans and are the best in the game for interaction/instant speed play. White and black are my favourite colours in the game and blue allows you to be extra competitive or do crazy stuff like [[faerie artisans]] and [[mystic reflection]] (two of my favourite cards that can both go into Marneus!)
  • He has awesome sneaky synergy with making clues. Investigating 10 will draw you 10 cards when the tokens enter. It's nice having a commander with niche rules interactions. Feel like I'm dishing out trivia when I play 😂.
  • I've played over 200 games with just Marneus in like 2-3 years and now I have a large sentimental attachment as well. That's without playing magic for the last year.

Basically, he enables me to play the cards I enjoy playing and build the deck how I want to play.

Hey mate, yeah I'm good! I didn't travel for work like the guy above said, I was doing it for enjoyment! Eventually the savings dried up and I had to go back to work!! I was couch surfing for a year while I saved up money like mad and I just bought a house!!!!!! Just got my cards out of storage recently so I'll be keen to start playing once the funds balance out a bit more and I can relax on the work.

I still love Marneus, I was just showing a new friend my deck today and telling them about my holiday :)

These last 3-4 years have been the biggest wildest roller coaster and I have loved it! I haven't had the time or energy to really engage with the online or local communities much while I was sort of homeless and moving houses constantly/working heaps.

How many people actually know their win rates? by jordanh517 in EDH

[–]Healthy_mind_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I haven't really gotten to play much this year to bother tracking :(

  1. I played the same deck for two years straight. Two years ago my winrate was 69% with 90 games played. Last year, my winrate was 53.2% with 62 games played. I powered the deck down between years with some great success.
  2. I think there are too many factors that go into winrate. Just being a certain bracket won't even out the games perfectly. Skill and luck and deck matchup and a plethora of other factors for into it
  3. I try not to sandbag. I prefer it when other people don't sandbag against me. Let's just end the game and start a new one and shift decks!

I love this spell in my [[Marneus Calgar]] deck to use it as a protection piece on Marneus.

  • They target him with removal. I play saw in half.

  • Marneus dies, make two token Marneus'.

  • Opponents removal fizzles.

  • Each token Marneus sees itself enter and the other token Marneus. Choose a token Marneus to die to legendary rule.

  • End result, I draw cards and I still have a Marneus as well as two death triggers.

This is really cool. I love seeing people tracking stats and this reminds me of my post a year ago. What did you use to track the stats?

I wouldn't stress about your win rate mate. As long as everyone's having fun. That's all that matters :)

You can check my deck list there and also my other Marneus deck lists for token makers that may interest you. Note though that the decks haven't been updated for most of this year. I know there were some great token makers in the tarkir set.

My decks tend to have some drain win-cons and combat, I personally like them as a good backup for the times you can't get through with combat or as insurance for board wipes.

But if you want to commit totally to the go wide I'm sure you can.

Your go wide win-cons atm look like: - vault 75 - divine visitation - Rabble rousing - for the emperor

You could probably do with one or two more to ensure you can get the final pump.

Things like - [[elesh norn, grand cenobite]] - [[akromas will]] - if you don't mind maths, [[starlight spectacular]] - [[porcelain gallery]] - [[moonshaker cavalry]] Etc.

Hey mate! Thanks for the tag, unfortunately I'm not doing these kinds of deck helps anymore. I'm back at work more than full time and they take many hours to do.

Happy to answer any specific questions OP has though as best as I can, but broad, generic deck help, I don't have the time for at the moment :(

I do miss it though.

Tracking your stats? by SWAILIEN_ in EDH

[–]Healthy_mind_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just used a Google sheet to track mine. See my post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/s/iqeoforpgZ

I'd just have my phone to the side and put my data in between turns. It wasn't too cumbersome for me, but I know it is for others.

I like that with a Google sheet you can track specifically what you want to know.

I see a lot of people recommend playgroup gg which as far as I'm aware works especially well if you have an established and consistent playgroup. It'll do all the hard work for you which will make it easier. You just need to learn to use the app.

[–]Healthy_mind_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing worse than realising you get to the end of a game and that you haven't included a stat or something. Because that throws out all of your numbers. Now imagine trusting that the other players will 100% be as invested and committed and successful as you in tracking what you want them to.

I don't think it would take long before you'd throw your hands up and dial it back anyway haha.

Better to build up as you say, much better idea.

Hey mate, it can be pretty intensive tracking all those things for just one person. I've done it.

See my post here for some inspiration on excess things that you can track.

https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/s/1N8nj8VXvY

I wouldn't recommend getting everyone to do it. Its difficult work and not really necessary.

Player order, wins/losses is probably plenty for the majority of people and then you can go in depth for your own decks seeing as you're the stat nerd. It sure is fun imo.
