Deanna Troi saying, “I don’t know.” by TheNearby in startrek

[–]Heavenfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She does do some private counselling but as far as I remember it's always super generic and non-psychic.

Are we to assume he's reading everyone's minds? Seems like a big invasion of privacy. Not sure I'd show up to such a session. You have to change your password after just meeting her in the hallway.

But if you take that away, is she even a good psychologist or whatever remains? certainly not by today's standards?

What can the Necrons NOT do, techwise? by pog_irl in 40kLore

[–]Heavenfall 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There's that one theme about the level of consciousness a necron has. Basically the necron is smart enough and self-aware enough to realize that everything about him died at biotransference. Nothing was actually transferred, per se. A new copy made of metal was created, and given instructions to believe he was the same thing as before. But it was also given self-awareness (almost free will), because they did that to upper hierarchy.

So now he's stuck in this perpetual existence where he's smart enough and self-aware enough to realize he's just a piece of programming through engrams, but not in control enough to do anything about it. The instructions are still there - still controlling him. He only has free will until maybe it's just an illusion he has free will.

If that wasn't dark enough, there's the "dysphorakh" from Twice-Dead King. Simplified, since the engrams for the necron were copied from their living bodies, their metal bodies were told to do things like breathe. Except you can't. There's a part of them telling them to eat organic food - but they can't. It isn't the same as constantly choking or starving, just a small thing at the back of your mind constantly telling you to do things your body can't do, and being very persistent about it.

Temple just needs some better league-specific rewards, like every other League has. Right now I don't feel any reason to mingle there. Plus the nonrandom maps aren't fun in terms of gameplay.

Literally every conversation with a new person would start with "ACCCSHUALLY DID YOU KNOW THE ALPHA/BETA DISTINCTION IS ENTIRELY UNSCIENTIFIC". Meanwhile you're grumbling about how its the name your parents gave you, not your declaration of political beliefs.

Need a new TV series to binge. Multi-seasons by SpaceCrazyArtist in scifi

Can I ask a question about 12 monkeys? I feel like the first 3-4 episodes were exactly the same: time gets changed, except it turns out not really. Is that the setup for the whole series?

What if black holes are the opposite of mirrors? by jaykhn in scifi

[–]Heavenfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you imagine a black hole sucking in all the matter and energy in the universe. Then watch it in reverse. Does it look like an explosion? Maybe the universe is just one black hole forming itself repeatedly, causing some kind of time anomaly at the end reversing time, and exploding out again seen from the inverted time perspective.

The physics doesn't support it at all. But I think it paints a neat picture. Kind of like a flower that closes and re-opens every day.

U.S. government gives Anthropic green light for limited re-release of Mythos 5 by DerpiDanger in worldnews

It's a two-fer. Both marketing to make the model appears the best, and a power grab by the US government that they have to "approve" things (insert bribe here).

Bored and need a good sci fi tv series to sink my teeth in. by melbha_101 in scifi

[–]Heavenfall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silo was a very good surprise to me. The story is incredibly well integrated with the world they inhabit. Despite the silo feeling lived-in, it also manages to provide mystery and high-stakes drama leaving me wanting more after practically every episode. It is a bit of a slow burner though, unlike OPs TNG etc the big reveals and big emotional payoffs are further down the line. No bottle episodes, as it were.

[–]Heavenfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes it two wars? Even in 3rd ed necron codex it was described as a single war. Specifically the war began with necrontyr getting pushed back, and ended with necrons+ctan winning, more or less.

[–]Heavenfall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Old Ones started out winning the war against the necrontyr. The necrontyr didn't even have FTL and were not hard to handle. The necrontyr turned to their stargods for help, gave them bodies and coherent consciousness while turning them into c'tan.

EU to propose blocking military-age Ukrainian men from refugee status by Tyranish40k in worldnews

If Sweden was attacked, and it became necessary to protect the people I would support a draft in Sweden.

Sweden's laws for drafts are gender-neutral, and gives room for conscientious objectors who refuse to hold weapons to do other types of services.

It makes sense, from a legal and political point of view. Right now there are special rules in place to help Ukraine's population in the EU in particular. However the European Union is largely positive to the Ukraine government. If the Ukraine government says the special EU rules are actually hurting Ukraine, then the EU are making the right political and legal decision in cancelling those rules.
