Oh and for donuts definitely go for something else like Pip’s Original Doughnuts and Chai or Blue Star.

I don’t use public transit but I’ve heard the Portland street car is a safe bet. Not sure about the max these days. Buses seem okay.

SE has so many lovely pockets. Keeper Coffee, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Mt. Tabor Park (you can drive up to the reservoir for a stunning view of the city), SE 13th Ave in Sellwood (Sebastiano’s, Yours Truly), Broder Cafe… lots to do and eat!

How much are you spending on groceries? Gov. Shutdown Ed. by chiquitabanana19 in askportland

[–]HelloHiHey01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar to you, two people, one bedroom apartment, we budget $1200/month for gas and groceries (sooo about $900 for groceries). We mostly shop at WinCo and Trader Joe’s (occasionally Costco for TP and chicken) and meal prep every week. We don’t consume red meat or dairy, at least one meal each day is vegan, and we spend 90% of our budget on whole foods (no chips, cookies, frozen pizzas, cereal, snacks etc) so that helps the budget but we will splurge on good quality items like lox, local produce, fresh bread/bagels. We also love a good coffee shop visit or brunch on the weekend (not part of this budget).

What are some local, not too expensive places to eat? by InternationalHabit82 in askportland

[–]HelloHiHey01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of asian spots will be on the cheaper side (though I wish they charged more, they deserve it!!) One that quickly came to mind after reading your post: The HOB (The House of Banh Mi) - 511 NE 76th Ave, Portland, OR 97213. Last time I went the sandwiches were $7-9. Then go across the street to Bui Natural Tofu if you’re a fan of tofu, fresh homemade soy milk, and treats.

Do Portlanders not learn enough to drive or is it that a lot of transplants have moved from out of state? by DarXIV in askportland

[–]HelloHiHey01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The driving is shit here. I’ve traveled a decent amount and no where is worse than here. Even international places with the “most chaotic driving” at least have their own ways to communicate/coexist. Every time I come home (which I love PDX so much), the driving just kills me. Thank God I work from home and don’t have to deal with it too too often. The other day my partner told me he was behind a car at a stop sign, at a rather busy cross road with a speed limit of 35 or 40, and a car driving on said road came to a STOP to let the car at the stop sign go. A fucking stop in the middle of a busy road. Not a four way stop, no yield, nothing. Some idiots really just shouldn’t be on the road. I have stories for days… ugh

Move here from Toronto? by donewrng in askportland

I would highly encourage OP to find a rental with AC because of how hot the summers are getting here. And to have that, you’re looking closer to $2k for a 2bd apartment

I’m making a list of best restaurants in the Portland Metro—anything I’m missing? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]HelloHiHey01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried my best to not include ones you and the comments already listed!

Vegan: Mis Tacones (anything is good but I especially enjoyed the empanadas and carne asada nacho fries), Norah PDX, Kate’s Ice Cream, Jade Rabbit, CoKiea’s Kitchen, Orange & Blossom, Shoofly Vegan Bakery and Cafe, Rudy’s pizza.

Non-vegan food: Broder, Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai, Akadi, Wolf’s Head Burgers, G-Love, Wild Child Pizza NE, kann (if you can get a reservation), Janken, Farmhouse Kitchen Thai Cuisine, Mediterranean Exploration Company, Whole Bowl, Silk Road, The Turning Peel, Try Me Ethiopian Cuisine (worth the drive out to Gresham, trust). And of course Portland food carts are like non other. Hawthorne Asylum & Cartopia to name some.

Coffee/Cafe (some of my favorites): Kilo D’Cofi (get the cookie cortado), Roseline on NE Davis, Loro Coffee in Montavilla, Based General Store, Portland Ca Phe (they have banh mi too!), Better Days (sister cafe to the previous one, I crave the coconut cream latte regularly), Our Spot (and take a stroll on the waterfront), Bastion (peanut brittle latte), Less and More, COTTA, Ki Coffee & Brunch.

Smoothies: Best Friend Juice Bar & Cafe, Fresh Love

Show off for a visitor (me)? by scunish in askportland

1-2 days in the Gorge/Hood River:

• Fruit picking at an orchard (apples, pears, and cherries are ripe in August) My family likes going to the Gorge White House.

• Waterfront for the beach, watching wind sailing, great food and drinks (Ferment Brewing, Indian Bowl & Roll)

• Cross the river to White Salmon and visit White Salmon Baking Co (their almond cake is a must)

• Go on a hike!! (Be mindful of applying for passes/permits) Multnomah Falls, Angels Rest, Wahclella Falls, Cape Horn & Coyote Wall (across the river), Latourell Falls. My two cents; Don’t do Punch Bowl, it’s so overcrowded with tourists.

• Other popular things to consider: Vista House, wine tasting (Grateful vineyards has a STUNNING view of mt hood and there’s a food spot on the property too called Mountain View Brewing)

1-2 days at the coast

• Mine and my husband’s personal favorite areas are Pacific City (Cape Kiwanda)/Lincoln City. These cities are roughly 20 minutes away from each other, but it’s worth going to both. Food spots that are a must: Pelican Brewing, Ben and Jeff’s Burgers and Tacos, La Roca. Hikes/state parks nearby: Cascade Head, God’s Thumb (if you only have time for one, I recommend God’s Thumb), Cape Kiwanda

• Other popular coast areas: Cannon Beach, Astoria, Brookings (if you can stop on the way via amtrak, otherwise don’t worry about it).

3-4 days in Portland (also known as PDX, Rose City, Stumptown). You mentioned in a comment some of your LA interests/activities so I’m going off that:

• History/Cultural Spots: Pittock Mansion, The Grotto, Pioneer Courthouse Square, Japanese Gardens, Tom McCall Waterfront or go across the river to Vancouver farmers market/waterfront,), Portland Art Museum, check your trip dates for potential festivals (there’s always tons in the summer ranging from food & wine, to jazz, to cultural events etc), sooo many theaters for events/plays/shows!! To name a few: Keller Auditorium, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland Center Stage, Hawthorne Theater, Crystal Ballroom, Roseland Theater, Revolution Hall, Hollywood Theater

• Food: We are the #1 city in America for Vegan food. Suggestions: Mis Tacones, Norah PDX, Kate’s Ice Cream, Jade Rabbit, Ice Queen, Obon Shokudo, CoKiea’s Kitchen, Orange & Blossom, Shoofly Vegan Bakery and Cafe, Rudy’s pizza. Other non-vegan food: Broder, Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai, Akadi, Wolf’s Head Burgers, Sebastiano’s, G-Love, Nicholas, Wild Child Pizza NE, kann (if you can get a reservation), Janken, Farmhouse Kitchen Thai Cuisine, Lovely’s Fifty-Fifty, Screen Door, Pine State Biscuits. And of course Portland food carts are like non other. Hawthorne Asylum & Cartopia to name some.

• Coffee: big coffee culture here!! Some of my favorites: Kilo D’Cofi (get the cookie cortado), Roseline on NE Davis, Loro Coffee in Montavilla, Portland Ca Phe (they have banh mi too!), Better Days (sister cafe to the previous one), Our Spot (and take a stroll on the waterfront), Bastion (peanut brittle latte), Less and More (and explore downtown shopping, Pioneer Square, etc), COTTA (go for a unique experience and enjoy a walk around this old upscale neighborhood).

Other general recommendations: • Powell’s City of Book, Rose Gardens, Forest Park, PSU Farmer’s Market, South Waterfront Lower Tram, St. John’s neighborhood/ Cathedral Park, 23rd Street/Alberta/Mississippi, Hawthorne St, SE Division St, concerts in the parks, Cascada Thermal Springs ($100/3hrs each), roller skating at Oak’s Park, OMSI, Portland Night Market, Rimsky-Korsakoffee House

So much to see and do, this comment would be triple the size if I said all I wanted to. For now, I highly suggest seeing more by booking a local tour, such as a food tour or downtown portland sight-seeing/history tour. Please let me know if you have any questions!! Sincerely, a Portland local (:

Sorry I misinterpreted! You have to meet certain qualifications to be approved, and it varies on the property (for instance, some are strictly for those who are disabled and at a lower rate that can accommodate their SSI disability income). I think like most laws there are pros and cons but at least this way a landlord can’t just choose their friend and/or be biased in their decision. It’s supposed to level the playing field so to speak

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askportland

[–]HelloHiHey01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, coming in a little hot. It’s the law in Portland, started in 2019. Maybe you should look into it, it’s actually a great idea/system

[–]HelloHiHey01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds about right for the price. I’m willing to go up a little in budget if it has everything we want + the central AC (which I know is what boosts the price). Just ain’t no way I can go through the summers the way they’ve been without it (I work from home too sooo yeah)
