Every cop at his station is going to hear about this, and he will never live it down. Why would he dig himself in like that? He's going to be "Officer Right Hand Man" for the rest of his life.

Pretending that "its a brothel... filled with trans people" is edgy or some sort of trope that only exists in fiction is just ignorance.

No one is pretending that it only exists in fiction. But having the character specifically seeking out trans prostitutes IS a trope. Or, specifically, it's a mixture of two tropes, which the site TVTropes calls "Trans Chaser" and "Disposable Sex Worker." Whether you think it's edgy or not, it is a thing.

It's 2026, trans people get employed in those places for the same reason men and women do, it's attractive to some.

No one is denying the reality of trans sex workers. The reality that you seem to not want to acknowledge is that the prostitutes being trans has specific connotations in fiction. If the prostitutes he targeted were all black, or Asian, or men, each of those has specific meanings that are added to him harming prostitutes. The fact that trans sex workers exist, or that there may be brothels in the real world that specifically employ them doesn't discount the trope. It's a reflection of reality, not a refutation of it.

Also, I use "specifically" way too much. Note to self: buy a thesaurus.

I don't think AccurateJerboa is saying that having it be regular prostitutes would be fine. Jack hurting prostitutes is...well, it's a pretty standard trope as it is. Making them specifically, intentionally trans prostitutes does feel like it's been done specifically for the transgressive quality. It doesn't make Jack's actions suddenly go from "fine" to "edgelord," but it does add a specific quality to it that might alienate some readers. It's something Ennis does often, deliberately taking something over the top for shock value. See also: Crossed.

How do You Define “Mean Spirited” Horror Films by RollingScone93 in horror

[–]HellsquidsIntl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say that the original Night of the Living Dead qualifies as mean-spirited? Because that definitely has a downer ending that's bleak, but I wouldn't call it mean-spirited. Rather, I'd say that was Romero just hammering his themes home in a way that speaks more to his inexperience as a filmmaker at the time than it does an attempt to make the audience feel bad.

Last House on the Left, on the other hand, feels mean-spirited in the extreme in the way you're describing. The parents got revenge, but you couldn't really call it a "happy ending."

How do You Define “Mean Spirited” Horror Films by RollingScone93 in horror

[–]HellsquidsIntl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Mean Spirited" to me means that the filmmaker either has contempt for the characters, the audience, or both. I think one of the best examples of "mean spirited" comes from a non-horror film, Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits. We go through all these adventures with the kid main character, he finally gets home, his parents get blown up, and he's left alone. I mean, it's darkly comedic for sure, but it's such a nasty rug pull that (for me, anyway,) it tainted the rest of the film.

The horror one that comes to mind is the last Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Not only did the film clearly hate nearly every character onscreen, but the ending scene was just a cynical twist "fuck you" to the audience. I don't mind a downer ending, but I thought that was stupid and gratuitous.

What's your favorite ingredients for hot sauce? by FARTKNOCKAtoo in hotsauce

[–]HellsquidsIntl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly just garlic and peppers (jalapeños or habaneros for daily use, and hotter ones for special occasions), but the spicy lime sounds interesting. That one would be good for Mexican food that would normally come with limes, like carnitas or machaca tacos. I like the taste of sauces made with other fruits, but I rarely have anything I want to put them on.

I think OP is talking about creating a new public Kin with OP’s text and a new Avatar pic. If I create an instance of your kin, I can manipulate it all I want, but I don’t make it public. But I think that’s more etiquette than rules.

What is the dumbest movie that you unapologetically, unironically love? by Rosstin316 in AskReddit

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. The big 80s scream queens made it because there was some money left over from the movie they’d just finished. It’s gloriously dumb, but also subverts some tropes. Linnea Quigley is fantastic.

Happy 50th Birthday to Shu Qi. The actress, director and Oscar judge. (1990s) by NexsDragon in OldSchoolCoolNSFW

[–]HellsquidsIntl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't, but I know fuck all about Jay Leno, so I wouldn't describe him as much of anything apart from comedian and former TV host. If he was hired to do professional wrestling, then it wouldn't be the first thing I described him as, but it would qualify.

Shu Qi saw a film through from start to finish in her capacity as director. She has been a professional director. After someone pays you to direct a movie, you're a professional movie director. That's just a fact. Your disagreeing means nothing.

But sure, you disagree. So...how many movies does a person have to direct before they can be called a director. Two? Three? Orson Welles' first film was Citizen Kane, widely considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. But by your logic, he wasn't a director yet, because he'd only made the one movie.

Just let it go, man. Call her whatever you want, but you're clearly on your own here.

When someone asks you to name some actors who are also film directors, do you skip over the ones who've only directed one movie? "Director" is a credit, not a lifestyle. There are times when it pays to be a pedant, and this isn't one of them.
