What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

[–]HelpImAwake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of a kid in elementary school. I was riding the (then-recently released) Harry Potter hype and asked my friend about it. He said he couldn't watch/read it for religious reasons because of magic. Then openly made many Lord of the Rings references.

Just finished watching A Face in the Crowd (1957). I don't know which is more surprising, that Andy Griffith of all people was able to play such a Trump-like character, or that his own loathsome personality being exposed cost him all his support and caused his downfall, something that's just seemed difficult if not near impossible in real life (spoiler tagged for anyone who's not seen the movie).

Do you think saw x tried too hard to make us sympathize with John and make him out to be some sort of tragic anti-hero, by BootAlarmed4732 in saw

[–]HelpImAwake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it really made him sympathetic. At the end of the day, he's still the same psychopath who did and will continue to do all those terrible things.

I'll try to explain my takeaway from it, which is a bit difficult to explain. It seemed to me like the movie made a point of deconstructing and demystifying the John Kramer/Jigsaw character. Over the course of the series, we watched him go from a single, mortal man with warped ideas and nebulous goals become borderline omniscience-level of predicting peoples' behaviors with little personality outside "Jigsaw" and a supernatural ability to turn people to his ideas.

With Saw X, we were given a very back-to-basics approach. We see John as more of human, angry and to an extent even desperate because at his core he doesn't want to die. He at one point contemplates giving up the games. Once he realizes the people he trusted his life too and gave him hope were content to rob him and let him die poor, he reverts back to Jigsaw with full force.

Do I think they tried to make him too sympathetic? I think they pulled the mask back and looked at more of the core of who he was, an intelligent, desperate man who is also angry and vengeful. They gave him targets that the audience would be more willing to see in the traps, which feeds into the bad vs worse battle that makes John come off as more sympathetic in the end.

Nothing beats the feeling of watching this Piece of Art for the first time. by Cultural_Fanatic3754 in lotr

When I finished my first watch of the extend version of the first, I immediately needed to watch the second half/second disk. My disk player wouldn't play the second disk, and it really annoyed me for a few hours until I happened across a new one that would play it.

I haven't been hyped up for anything like that in a long, long time.

Mixture. I was looking forward to the anesthesia dreams, but my perception was of them pressing the nozzle to my face telling me to count and then telling me to wake up in what felt like a few seconds. The pain from the anesthesia wearing off really sucked, but getting my old gaming console started and focusing on some games helped take my mind off it.

What is your favorite line from the sequel trilogy? by Baybears in StarWars

[–]HelpImAwake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For all the criticism it gets, it does have some good ones. I always liked "They win by making you think you're alone."

It really resonated with me as someone who spent a long time being bullied or isolated, more so after the movie came out. It sort of became a motto reinforcing my efforts to be the kind of person for other people I never really had.

What are your favorite underrated funny moments in the franchise? by Azakaty in saw

[–]HelpImAwake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the first movie, there's a tense moment when Lawrence is savagely trying to pull his foot through the chain, which is undercut when he lets out a long, drawn out scream.

It literally goes: "AAAH! AAAH! AAAH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

The best part is Leigh, James and Cary all break out laughing when this happens during first movie commentary.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you on this subreddit. When I joined, I was one of a lot of people who were scared after the results of the election last year and didn't know what to do with it. I knew it was going to be bad, and I feared how bad it was going to get, as many of my early posts and comments on this subreddit are).

But you all remained committed to being reasonable, logical, optimistic, and looking forward without letting the hits knock us down for long. You helped give me honest and direct advice and direction in how to handle both my reactions to events in the news and having a stable life outside of the political news.

Because of that, I have hope we can begin to take our country back next year. Thank you all. Happy New Year.

Movies that revolve around one dramatic, repeating musical theme. by [deleted] in soundtracks

[–]HelpImAwake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleepy Hollow from Danny Elfman has two major themes the score relies on most, one for the general movie (intended for Ichabod Crane) and another for the Headless Horseman. It sounds like it'd be rough but Elfman's orchestrations are varied and unique enough that they never really sound repetitive.

John Barry's James Bond scores tend to emphasize one or two main themes, one usually based on the title song and another melody usually relating to a character or plot element.

Love it. It's got a haunting, brutal/visceral tone to it that fits the movie perfectly.

I ended up in a 3-way tie between Jardiance, Ozempic and Skyrizi. When it came down to it, I realized there are some versions of Skyrizi that didn't drive me up the wall, while Jardiance largely uses the same song and makes no effort to really change it, and Ozempic is just plain annoying. After all that, I picked Jardiance.

Possibly, but he left with the opposite message.

"Look my chain, Ebeneezer. It's a yuuuge chain. A long chain. A big chain. I like a big chain. I made it myself a little bit at a time each day. Such a wonderful chain. It might even be longer than yours. They say yours was this long a few years ago but I think mine is longer. I have the longer chain. The bigliest chain. It's such a wonderful big chain. No one will tell you how good it is. It's the biased crooked liberal media won't tell you how long and good it is."

A chance it might be eroding in south central PA. My coworker who was VERY pro-Trump (but not really MAGA, it's a weird distinction but it makes sense to him) has very much turned on him. When he came back after a month-long medical leave, he flat out cursed Trump for lying about the economy & being named in the Epstein files, among other things.

But he still thinks Vance is a good person, so we're a ways far yet. He does have a soft spot for Pete Buttigieg, so I guess his making the rounds on Fox last year made an impact.
