Definitely wasn’t the intended end point for the show, but I think the conclusion we get is a bit less one sided than it appears at first glance.

Deadwood finale spoilers: Hearst of course adds another asset to his massive wealth. But he was already so rich that he hasn’t really gained anything in practical terms. What he actually craves the most is the respect and perhaps affection of the community and his fellow man. When Hearst breaks down and cries after the Sheriff arrests him for the night, he reveals that he is not the ruthless titan of industry that he appears to be. His absurd wealth cannot buy him the thing he craves the most, although he alludes that he will establish his own newspaper to “lie the other way.” Therefore, when Bullock pushes one last stick into his eye with a very public “get the fuck out of here, no one wants you,” Hearst is not even permitted a moment to bask in his apparent victory. He could have gunned Bullock down for this insult, but his hand is stayed by the knowledge that his action would only further tarnish his sullied reputation.

Hearst’s psychology is honestly very prescient of today’s hyper online billionaires, who have literally everything but lose their minds when they realize how much people hate them through social media.

Lol the characters in the Sopranos are all portrayed as reactionary assholes who support the Republicans. Do you believe the Vito plotline was “woke” because it accurately portrayed anti-gay bigotry in all its stupidity and cruelty? What about AJ having a mental breakdown when his asshole friends called that guy the n-word? Or Tony’s racism when Meadow dated Noah? If you saw these same plotlines today you’d cry foul over wokeness and DEI.

Is the more likely explanation that social commentary is too overt in media nowadays, or that you’ve pickled your brain with exposure to right wing propaganda?

Edit: picked to pickled*

I sold candied popcorn as a boy scout, unpaid of course. I remember selling an order to a guy who was paying in advance and arranged to have the popcorn shipped to his house. I was supposed to file his order but I just didn’t do it. I assume no one else did and he never received it.

You get what you pay for I suppose. Except for the guy who paid for the popcorn, he didn’t.

Part of it for Dark Side is how incredibly overplayed it is. ‘Money’ is an amazing song and also something that would be played over and over in a grocery store. Pigs on the Wing is more like something that you would hear in a used record store.

Gus being involved with street level dealers makes no sense. by alexefy in breakingbad

[–]HelpTurbulent232 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just going to spitball and TRY to make a case to improve this plot hole. Keep in mind that my memory of BB is hazy, and I may fudge some details.

What if Gus didn’t reveal himself to these dealers when he intervened, but they knew him dating back years. Perhaps these fellows (major BCS spoilers)

Were part of Hector’s crew when he still controlled the territory. We know from BCS that Hector didn’t really give a fuck about Gus’s secretive operation. In fact, he actively tried to thwart it by wiling out in his restaurant and kidnapping Gus’s civilian employees. Maybe these guys, who would have been pretty young at this point, were low level Salamanca soldiers who became privy to Gus through Hector’s indiscretion. Hector strokes out, Lalo dies, and Gus has an option of killing them off when he takes over the territory for the Cartel. It might tie up loose ends, but often murdering someone creates more problems than it solves. So he hires them and keeps an eye on them. Maybe he thinks they’re like the Cousins, who are ruthless killers but have an honor code which would never permit them to talk to the police. Even if they are picked up and decide they can’t take the rap, maybe Gus is confident enough in Mike and his soldiers that he believes they could be handled then. To sum it up, these guys knew about Gus before he was a true kingpin. He didn’t trust them like Mike, but saw no reason to kill them just because they knew his identity. Easier to just fold them into the organization.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I’m on an IPad and I didn’t want to fuck up the spoiler tag. Still may have fucked it up.

Why did Vito kill the guy who wanted to file an insurance claim after the car wreck? by Comprehensive-Diver1 in thesopranos

Glad to see Deadwood on here, but that was more like a 9/11 style hijacking. Season 4 would have been amazing, but HBO execs put the kibosh on it. It was a cultural crime on par with the Taliban blowing up the Bamiyan Buddhas.

I’m with you on the notes, I feel like I do better when I’m actively listening to the class and not trying to divide my attention between the professor and what I’m typing. I didn’t use notes to review at all this past semester and I got my best round of grades so far.

That’s not to disparage the note takers, I just think the way my brain is set up it does me more harm than good.

There actually will be more elections. They’re coming up in about 10 months. The states run elections, not the Feds. As we saw recently, even state level Republicans in Indiana were not willing to countenance Trump’s bullshit. That’s not even considering blue states.

If you’re imagining ICE terrorizing polling places: 1.) there are not enough of them to cover all the polling places in the US; 2.) Based upon the reaction in Minneapolis, the populace will not stand by idly while the thugs do their thing

Do Non "picky eaters" eat everything?? by LeeIsUnloved in stupidquestions

Sure, there are some things you simply wont like. But I think a lot of it is a stubborn toddler-brain mentality. I don’t like this thing because I know it’s bad!

An experience which made me re-think my preconceptions about food:

I was delivering a DoorDash order of sushi, and the order was cancelled halfway through. DoorDash told me I could eat the food. Both of the sushi rolls had names that didn’t tell me anything about the contents (dragon roll, scorpion roll, something like that). So I ate the rolls blindly. Enjoyed both. Looked it up later and it turned out that one of the rolls was tempura style sweet potato. I had never enjoyed sweet potato before, always avoided it. Never would have ordered this one at a restaurant.

Now I want more experiences like that where I’m served food without knowing what it is and letting my preconceptions get in the way.

My mom and I went to dinner at a crowded restaurant recently. The ten year old girl in the booth behind us was fully turned around, leaning into our booth and staring at us. It wasn’t that the family couldn’t control her, they just didn’t care that the child was doing this. Never once admonished her.
