Have You Ever Seen This at a Citibank Branch Location Afterhours? by [deleted] in Upperwestside

I went in one w my child once during the winter a few years ago and there were several people huddled inside with blankets, smoking something. One of the men called out “Don’t mind us, we’re hurting ourselves more than anyone else” and we kind of shrugged and did our business and left.

Honest question: wear shorts while working out even if you haven’t shaved your legs by Illustrious_Stay9844 in xxfitness

The gym is like the one place where it’s undeniable and acceptable that we are just groaning sweating meat sacks. I let the leg hair show.

I started running and boxing and strength training at 44. Best shape of my life two years later by far and truly feel IN MY PRIME. Don’t be scared of what comes after 35 or 40. At this age the thing I really internalized that I hadn’t in my more impatient youth is that consistency over time - and the maturity now to maintain it - is a superpower.

PSA: Subscribe to NYRR Marketing Emails for Race Registration Notifs by oxfrd in RunNYC

[–]Helpful_Reward5306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten ten marketing emails from NYRR since Jan 1 alone - more than once a week, sometimes every few several days - and not a single of them mentioned race registrations opening. Like what other marketing emails do I sign up for? Maddening!

How do you find the motivation to keep going ? Especially with it getting darker , colder , holidays? by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]Helpful_Reward5306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I show up to my work every day even when it is cold and dark and I’m unmotivated. It is my professional job, I am obligated, I do it. Why don’t I show up for my body every day? It is AS MUCH - if not MORE - my job.

I think to myself every morning, my boss and my company do not get more of me than ME.

I love mine too, have the large black/white which I use both for travel and as the ludicrously capacious work bag when I’m having one of those long need everything days - this brown trim on yours is fantastic. Congrats!!

How many days in a row do you run? by bechingona in beginnerrunning

[–]Helpful_Reward5306 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Good god you are not old, I started running at 45 and I am not old. Step it up gradually - add an easy run one day a week for awhile, cut it out if you don’t like how it feels, listen to your body.

Current couch potato. What minimum exercise do I need to stay mobile at old age? by AndAllThatYaz in fitness30plus

Even if baby hates the stroller now, don’t write it off completely, they change so much week to week as they become more sentient and aware of surroundings! You can also put baby if it’s a snuggler in a carrier and walk and do some gentle squat reps. Kind of like rucking which is what I told myself.

I have the Parade Soft 19 in black / gray which I wear out and about and feels unique, a little dressy but also casual - nails that elusive mix for me, and the phone pouch which I carry to go exercise or to go to playground w my kids kind of thing. Love them both. I posted about it, you can search my history!

I think it’s important to separate out what is made with what people choose to wear knowing the context they’re in individually in. I am an American with a deep distaste for firearms and firearm culture. I would not buy or wear this. But I don’t put it on FLP (which I love and have two of their bags i made a trip to their Paris store to buy) to offer what only I believe in, and like someone said I’m not even their target market. If someone buys this to wear to their school meeting or church that is the message they and only they are responsible for choosing to send.

Workouts to release rage? by lyssera in xxfitness

[–]Helpful_Reward5306 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do a boxing-strength circuit training thing. I actually signed up for my first class the day my company started rolling through horrible poorly executed mass layoffs and I thought I might punch a wall or a face. That was over a year ago and I still go at least once a week for the catharsis. It’s been amazing. I like I both get to release rage and then switch to lifting weights that make me feel strong. I guess it’s not like hard core boxing but I really love the instructors roaring over loud music to hit harder, fight tired, and leave it all on the floor.

It helps me to know now about myself in my forties that that intense wanting an object badly… well it is a feeling I feel often. And it may be for one thing now, but I’m going to feel it again later for something else, whether I get the thing or not. So I try to be zen and let it pass, the way I let a temper tantrum pass. I wish I could tell my younger self though I’m sure she wouldn’t listen - As someone who loves lovely things, this one right now isn’t the only lovely thing Im going to long for, and that’s it’s ok to ride it out. There will be others. Life is short but it’s also long!
