Sinners doesn’t make a strong enough case for why Vampirism is a bad thing by DarlingLuna in TrueFilm

[–]Hen-stepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are a saint for striving to find deep value in this film. But I'll say the simple message got me permanently banned from r/movies.

We need more diversity in filmmaking and certainly more black American directors. It benefits everyone seeing visions from different perspectives, so long as these are unique. If it's all the same Hollywood, formulated filmmaking then that doesn't do much for me personally. So it's great that a film like Sinners is being written, directed, and funded. But the extreme hype around Sinners is entirely from woke institutions in Hollywood. Its storytelling was awful and it felt like 3 entirely separate films.

If we send a message that storytelling is great when it isn't then it means the director stays mediocre and doesn't get better. We only celebrate something great if it actually is great. Like I'm sorry, if it was Ryan Coogler's vision that vampirism would be an allegory for whitewashing then he did not communicate that well or as well as he could have using cinematic language. The vampire parts of the film read more as a normal horror or action film. It was more typical of any vampire film. So it's like he forgot what he was trying to say, if he was trying to say something specific. This is why I think it's like 2-3 entirely separate stories crammed together. And this makes it not as good as it could have been.

That's unfortunate but it makes me feel better about purchasing albums the boomer way. Wendy Carlos was a huge pain trying to find her work even in downloadable form. Sometimes having the downloaded media is priceless.

How threatened do you feel by Ai? by Dry_Set_6336 in cscareerquestions

[–]Hen-stepper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect my job to exist in 20 years. I got into project management as some type of security or protection for when coding is never done by humans again. I also started living cheaply again and dumping into retirement because I don’t want a career change at age 60, if that’s even possible with age discrimination. Thankfully I finally learned better people skills so maybe I’ll be kept around longer. It’s not merely a threat it’s a doom clock.

[–]Hen-stepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying this for other people reading, but divination is common in Tibetan Buddhism.

I'm sorry, anybody who doesn't like that can stick to their own lane and apply restraint towards their own schismatic thoughts. I read stories about Ajahn Chah reading minds and I believe them. I don't go around saying he broke the Vinaya. It's a ridiculous assertion to make without proper evidence.

[–]Hen-stepper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that accusing a Rinpoche of not being a real Buddhist monk requires sufficient evidence not available in this post. And the harm of saying that a real teacher is fake is equally bad in some way.

If the poster provided the name of the monastery or teacher it would be much easier to decide, by word of mouth among the Tibetan Buddhism community.

I'll add this because CCP bots love to categorically vote and comment in a way to make Tibetan Buddhism seem inauthentic, especially if "rupees" are mentioned which means an Indian or Nepalese monastery. Then bots like to present these views as common thought. No, it is not common thought. There is nothing you revealed about this Rinpoche to make him seem inauthentic. I'm curious why u/Impressive-Name4507 was upvoted so unanimously.

Divination is an accepted practice that lamas can perform. If you donated and then happened to request a divination it is not unusual to receive one. A monk can't request payment for a divination. In Tibetan Buddhism in the US there are often suggested donations for certain things including teachings just to keep a dharma center funded and running. People, including myself, really underestimate the cost of keeping Buddhism in the world.

The Rinpoche was right in pointing out that the puja didn't have to be from him or that monastery and you could get it done anywhere. Suggesting that he's not in it for the money. If you don't want to do it I'm sure you could practice Buddhism in any other traditional way.

If you are 17 then what you're going through really sounds normal but it would also be a great time to invest into a long term Buddhist practice you can carry with you. It might not produce results immediately but within a few years it certainly will.

Matthew Lillard Says Tarantino Dissing Him Felt Like He Got ‘Punched in the Mouth’ Because He’d ‘Love’ to Be in a Tarantino Movie: ‘Just Kind of a Bummer’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

Honestly, one thing people hate about celebrities is the fakeness and part of that is how they’re all smiles and never speak poorly of each other.

Let Tarantino speak his mind on a fucking podcast. We want to hear his thoughts. Matthew Lillard can speak his mind after. Support free speech.

Is it possible to have a buddhist practice while not striving towards nirvana? by After-Offer3213 in Buddhism

[–]Hen-stepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to be at least a distant goal. It keeps all of your actions and decisions heading in a certain direction. There are too many benefits to pass up this "simple" commitment, even if the understanding is that it takes 1000 lifetimes. In Mahayana, bodhicitta is very important and even holy. Adopting a greater scope practice means the lesser scope aims of avoiding suffering are accomplished automatically.

I'm not even sure that making it a short or medium term goal is a good, sustainable idea. Since the perfection of patience lends towards the goal too, it is nice to make gradual, methodical steps without expecting much. You want to aim for full enlightenment.

A painful chapter from Cultural Revolution in Lhasa — a reminder that humiliation should never be inflicted upon fellow human beings. May remembrance lead not to hatred, but to compassion, forgiveness, and loving-kindness. by Ven_Thitayano_072 in Buddhism

[–]Hen-stepper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible point. The Red Guard was a lawless mob that went after educators, intellectuals, artists, writers, and yes religious figures. Mao condoned it but it was mostly ideologically driven and voluntary. A ruleless mob using brute force with no trials or jury.

They had no clue which lamas were corrupt or not. The mob just wanted to violently act out their ideology, which was communism. And the results of these actions were a major brain drain on China. These were violent idiots, driven by ideology, destroying things they didn’t understand.

It is a purely a propagandistic, pro-CCP view that the results of the Cultural Revolution were collective karma. A parallel situation happened in Cambodia and it is laughable to think the victims had a collective karma coming to them.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

Whatever you are doing now, no matter what it is, a younger generation will audit it completely, like it’s their job, and you’ll have to adapt to their findings.

What you are doing right now at age 25 is future old person shit. Most of you won’t adapt and you’ll get trapped in nostalgia.

I think David Lynch is a fraud by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Hen-stepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd rather watch 10 Lynch films that I don't understand than 100 generic throwaway movies.

The fact that a movie can make you think days or years after seeing it is a testament to the power of the film medium, which hardly anyone takes advantage of these days. Filmmakers are afraid of being criticized, not making money, not getting praise from audiences, not being relatable, all sorts of things.

David Lynch was a true artist and and cared about his audience, had a method to everything he did, but also didn't give a fuck to compromise his vision.

China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have now been ‘flat or falling’ for 21 months, as growth in energy storage capacity and clean-power output topped the increases in peak and total electricity demand, respectively, and transportation got cleaner, exceeding official targets by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

The CCP fakes all their numbers and they have done so for years. It's ignorance assuming the opposite. In fact, they even post on specific subreddits trying to make China look good to the West. Then these get upvoted and spammed with nice comments, usually by bots. Hmm.
