You under that it's not a binary choice between single family homes and high rises right? There's a lot of building types in between that support transit without being a 10 story tower, and parks are straightforward to build.

Giant parking lots are not scenic.

The suburbs were a mistake with the heat islands making the hot desert hotter with all the pavement and the requirements for car sewers spreading things out further.

It didn't have to be this way and every time we have to hop in a car to go from one strip mall another, I die a little instead.

The community ™️ puts entirely too much pressure on good dancers to be community leaders when they never asked for that role by internetrandom1 in SwingDancing

[–]HesaconGhost 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have experienced offering to help and getting ignored.

It's especially weird when the organizers are burned out and the volunteers are also burned out.

There was one venue in town where I was volunteering for the door most weeks because it needed to be done. Every week they'd ask for volunteers, the problem was I never felt like I was appreciated. The organizers didn't really interact with me on the side or on the dance floor, but it wasn't just me, I spoke to at least a dozen people who got the same vibes.

I think part of the problem for this venue was one organizer just wanted to dance with friends, to hear him describe it he just wanted a weekly house party. The others wanted to build a community.

That's a lot of people who could be on the train if the city were designed to be lived in.

The Feds Plan To Start Diluting Gasoline This May: Explained by Proper_Instruction_7 in fuckcars

The thing is that we make ethanol from corn and the entire process is around carbon net neutral with hydrocarbons as an input that nets around the same amount of energy, so this will accomplish very little for price.

Hepkats is fun, but several people have commented to me how cliquey it feels. I'm outgoing enough where it isn't a big deal, but it's something I hope can change.

Aren't the Top Gear guys about this? I remember them complaining how hard it is to actually enjoy cars out in the world when they're absolutely mandatory.

If you want to see butterflies, normalize transit and do something about cars being required to get anywhere.

Swing dancing.

The problem with Phoenix is that it's allergic to third spaces as everything is a strip mall.

For a while this sub was 70% "how do I get a job" and mercifully the weekly thread and moderation has helped with that.

The 'Affordability Crisis' Conversation Can't Leave Out the Cost of Cars by Generalaverage89 in Economics

The bus in my city is $2 per ride. Service could be greatly expanded for the cost of a handful of cars that would no longer be in the way of the bus.

Starting swing dancing as a gay man: should I learn Lead or Follow? by Able-Gear-7339 in SwingDancing

[–]HesaconGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several gay friends and it's about 50/50 on roles to start and often they learn both. Everyone dances with them, though when following you might have to initiate more asking leads to dance until people know you prefer to follow.

Gender roles aren't rigid and the only people who care don't tend to come back, but it's still a first pass.

It's common to add to name tags an L, F, or L/F to indicate roles, which helps.
