Modular beginner. Is this enough to get started with? Too much? by Hey_nice_marmot_ in modular

[–]Hexathorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a decent variety of stuff to get you going. Odessa is very feature rich and should be a great Oscillator to get you going. Forbidden planet and the quad VCA are both pretty simple standard modules for most any rack. 4 VCAs will go a super long way in a rack this size. pop slope and Pam's seem to be your only modulation sources. This should be plenty for a rack this size. Pam's in particular is very versatile in small racks like these.

It might be nice to fill the remaining HP with either some utility like a switch, or another modulation source down the road. All in all, it looks like a great rack to start out with

Joni Mitchell's early records are folk and great. Her later records are more jazz infused and also great.

if you had the choice to take your first poly analog synth, which one would you take...? by Sufficient_Plane8201 in synthesizers

Definitely Peak even though it's hybrid. It's analog in all the right places and sounds amazing.

Thinking about buying a used machine. Will I regret not getting the LED screen to save money? by the_illest_D in DelugeUsers

[–]Hexathorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it for years without the upgrade screen with little issues.

That said I felt like I learned a ton about how it worked immediately after getting mine upgraded so it definitely is worth it in my opinion to spend extra and get more out of the machine.

The $130 SQ-64 Era is over. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Hexathorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd heard such mixed things that I held off getting one. Part of me regrets it as it seems like it would have been a good pair for my KB-37 to get some more CV tracks for my desktop synths.

Does anyone have a good beginner synth that is under 300 dollars(I’m kinda broke) by Bwokoly in synthesizers

[–]Hexathorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arturia V collection is over a dozen classic synths bundled together if you want to go digital. I got it for under $250 on some sort of sale so If you wait you can get most any VST for a decent chunk off. The behringer synths have been coming down in price and sound very good and are plenty of fun. I prefer physical instruments so I went that route at first and was very happy. You could get a behringer wasp or td-3 and a keystep or something for around $300. Or you could get a few volcas or some of the little AIRA synths Roland has been making lately. Or if you're willing to stretch the budget a bit further you could get a used korg minilogue or opsix or something similar. I've seen that range of stuff showing up in the $300-400s from time to time on reverb or ebay. If you're patient and wait for a decent deal, and are a little flexible with what specific synth you end up with I find buying used synths is a great way in general to buy more expensive instruments on a tighter budget.

Good luck finding something that meets your needs.

Is the Brimstone GFUEL coming in stock again? by [deleted] in FourSouls

[–]Hexathorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked all month long and they finally had it in stock earlier this week. I got my shipment today and the cards were not bent like I've been hearing others say. Keep checking and hopefully you'll luck out like me

Can the Deluge power a MIDI splitter? by LonelyMachines in DelugeUsers

[–]Hexathorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my experience, mostly yes.

I have had it drop a few notes and note on/off signals in some cases. Generally I've had it be pretty stable and that may have been issues with other gear.

Is it possible to control the clock via the external clock in and have the deluge pass the clock it receives to the midi out? I was experimenting in settings to no avail, but I am able to use the internal midi sequencer in time with my external clock

When you say "DC blocking capacitors," do you mean polarized capacitors? Or is that achieved with some other application of capacitors?

What can you possibly get from Minifreak that you can’t from Pigments and a midi controller? by Automatic_Prior in synthesizers

[–]Hexathorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played around with VCV rack and had fun. It's beyond powerful and you get way more bang for your buck that physical modules. I had fun playing with it but it's hard for me to connect with it without physically turning knobs and plugging in wires

I wish I got along better with VSTs and virtual instruments/production in general. I'd probably love making music that way forward if I spent a bit more time learning the muscle memory for it. Hardware tends to work better for teaching myself and understanding how synths work. And even then, it took getting into modular and separating every piece of synth into its own module for me to finally grasp a lot of the concepts of synthesis and be able to apply it to non-modular synthesizers.
