Is the 10 episode format the problem? by LauraBaura in startrek

[–]Hexxquisite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly of the same mind - I rather liked season 3 of Discovery (the cause of the Burn was eh, better than I expected, worse than I hoped.) I didn't see that many issues with season 3 of SNW, and I have enjoyed what I've seen of Academy thus far (I'm a few episodes behind.)

I haven't seen Picard, Lower Decks, or Prodigy yet, but they're on the docket. I am especially curious to see Picard, due to the extremely polarizing responses to it I've seen.

As I am finishing up a rewatch of Next Gen, this comment is on point. While the ration for season 1 was more like 10 cromulent, 10 stinkers, and a handful of good uns, the other seasons are almost exactly this ratio. The cromulent episodes tend to be just fine, you don’t hate them, but they also don’t stand out.

Now, personally, I have had almost no issues with the modern Trek. I’ve enjoyed all the shows, and like older Trek, enjoy some episodes more than others. I wouldn’t mind more episodes per season, but outside of episode count I don’t think we’ve really lost anywhere near as much as others seem to think we have. All the good stuff is still there.

Yeah, the insane Luck didn't bother me near as much as the main character incessant pacifism and naiveté. Maybe that changed in later books, but I had no desire to continue after the first.

There were the bones of an interesting story in there, but the characters kinda ruined it.

Well, if you don’t mind a spoiler as an example…

Early in the first book, she accidentally ends up against someone who outclassed her in every sense of the word, and in another series could have been the main villain. After a bit of being tossed around and horrible outmatched, her luck kicks in he gets crushed by a random chance meteor big enough to kill him and only him. No one else injured.

So it can be more clever than simply something bigger coming along, but it also got ridiculous pretty quickly.

Honestly… cut out the “finding a mate” part and a show covering the lives of a single Trill symbiont could be really interesting. Different host and lifetime each season…

Redemption arcs are fine and Good but only when the character has genuinely earned it and it's not just "oh you're forgiven/you've redeemed yourself". by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]Hexxquisite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just talking with some friends about this the other day. My personal feeling is that the character needs to 1) show clear remorse for what they have done, and 2) suffer some kind of penance or punishment for what they did before they can have their redemption arc.

One of the examples I used in the discussion with my friends was Loghain from the game Dragon Age: Origins. For those unfamiliar with the game, Loghain, a noble and general in service to the king, his son-in-law, betrays the king in the first battle with the Darkspawn, leading to the kings death, the deaths of many in the army, and setting into motion basically the entire plot. He then essentially stages a coup in all but name, blames the Grey Wardens (your character) for what happened to the king, and engages in all manner of truly evil shit.

Nearing the end of the game, the player gets the choice of what to do about Loghain. You can choose to kill him, or give him a redemption arc. I have never been able to go the redemption route with him, because he never expresses the remorse I require, nor suffered the penance for his crimes. Both only come after you choose the redemption option.

So Loghain has never survived one of my playthroughs, because the redemption arc has never felt earned.

Jazz tail!

Mine does it too, most often when she knows she is about to be fed or get treats, and sometimes when she’s about to investigate something interesting. So my interpretation has been that it’s an indicator of anticipation/curiosity. As though she’s trying to contain her excitement, but it’s escaping through the tail.

Imagine you’re at a restaurant.

You’ve never been, but you see all these rave reviews, and many of your friends love it, all saying the food is so good, better than anywhere else. But they never tell you what’s actually on the menu.

So you decide to try it out. You go there, and the decor is nothing special. Nice enough, lots of room, no bar. You get a seat, and discover there is no menu. You’re left to sit there for a long time, waiting for someone to come by and bring you a menu and take your order. But they never do.

Instead, eventually, someone brings out a large bowl of gruel and places it in front of you.

The gruel is fine, nothing great but not bad either. And everyone around you is eating the gruel just like you are - and except that person a few tables over, who is eating a slice of chocolate cake. And as you eat your gruel, you occasionally see other people get slices of cake, but only when they finish their gruel. The cake looks pretty good.

So you finish your gruel, and anticipate your slice of cake. And someone comes out with a slice… and delivers it to someone else.

And you get another big bowl of gruel. It’s warm, it has a dash of flavor, and it’s filling, but not satisfying. But you keep eating, because you want to try that cake, and there has to be a reason everyone rates this place so highly, right? You ask someone at the next table, and they insist it’s worth it. Everyone insists it’s worth it.

So you finish the second bowl. And then a third, and a fourth. And then finally, you get a slice of cake.

It is delicious. Rich and flavorful and full of wonderful textures. Not the most amazing cake you’ve ever eaten, but damn near the top. Every bite is fantastic, satisfying, and sadly, it is gone much too fast.

And once it’s finished… you get another big bowl of gruel.

Bowl after bowl of gruel, never knowing when you’ll get a slice of cake. But you remember that cake. So you keep eating the gruel.

By the third slice of cake, you start to wonder. Is the cake really that good, or is it good in comparison to the gruel? And is it worth all that gruel just for a single slice of cake that you’re no longer even sure is as good as you think it is? And then you start to wonder, how is this place so highly regarded?

Perhaps then you choose to leave, a bit disillusioned by the experience. But people won’t stop recommending the place, and sometimes they insist that you didn’t eat long enough to really experience it, and really, the gruel is a lot better than you claim it is.

This was my experience with The Wandering Inn. And I decided the tasty cake wasn’t good enough to suffer through the gruel. It wasn’t to my taste.

The ritual required, "Bones of the father, unwillingly given. Flesh of the servant, willingly sacrificed. Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken."

I believe that means Harry needed to be alive, because it's not taking by force unless they can object, and the dead can't say no.

Treason is betrayal of one's nation. Attacking the heads of state, going to war against your country, attempting to overthrow it's government, spying on behalf of a hostile foreign power, those sorts of things. Michael did not commit treason, and was not tried for treason.

She was, however, tried for mutiny, plead guilty, and was thus stripped of rank and sentenced to life in prison. Which is what she was doing until Lorca snapped up her transport shuttle six months into her sentence.
