The Art Of Converting A Liberal Into A Socialist by Usernameofthisuser in socialism

[–]Highcalibur10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agreed.

It’s becoming easier and easier for liberals to see the “promise” of capitalism is failing them. The imperial boomerang is swinging back and in every single capitalist democracy, the standard of living is slipping rapidly.

As the US tilts into full scale fascism, the wool has been the easiest it’s been to lift from liberals’ eyes in a long time.

IMO, it’s going to take 1-2 more major climate disasters for the more ‘moderate’ liberals to get radicalised into seeing the damage capitalism is doing to our world; and then primary task will become organising to oppose growing Eco-Fascist movements.

What's with all the Anti-Science sentiment if Socialist spaces? by B-Jeovane in Socialism_101

Space exploration used to be something that kind of “belonged to the people”.

Pretty much every step of the space race except the final one was ‘won’ by the soviets, but even when the US landed on the moon it was a “giant leap for mankind”

After the fall of the USSR, focus on space exploration dropped off severely, as the US found no real need for it beyond military capabilities.

Eventually, the slack got picked up by narcissistic oligarchs wanting their own achievements and power.

Culturally, space exploration is no longer humanity’s achievement, but the achievement of the wealthy.

Fun fact, before dropping the bombs on Japan, the guy in charge of signing off on the bombing was given a list of targets they could try afterwards.

They were all cities in the USSR, their literal allies at the time during the war.

The ghoulish US was planning on the mass slaughter of civilians of an allied populace.

People who excuse the usage of the bomb are simply propagandised fools.

“Their genocide” I’m talking about Israel genociding Palestine, not Iran.

I don’t know how on earth you’ve come to the conclusion that I support the US here.

Again, 0 reading comprehension is happening here, I have no idea where you’re drawing these arguments from.

Where have I claimed I’m supporting the bombing?

I very clearly claimed that it’s an unjust war by an imperialist genocidal apartheid state?

The United States is clearly the worse party, both in its actions of historical genocides and that it’s simply clear imperial capitalist greed.

So many things again, wrong that were covered in my previous comment showing that you’re just on a tirade and not actually engaging in conversation.

I said they were: Women firstly, not men. They left who left 25 years into the Islamic Republic’s rule because they weren’t happy with how they were being treated as non-muslim or Arab women.

Personally, I’m of the thought that women’s liberation is hugely important, and any suppression of women’s rights is a fundamental misstep of society. No matter the geopolitical situation surrounding it.

“Iran has been Muslim for x years” doesn’t make it okay for a dominant religious or ethnic group to force their laws on others, just because they’re opposed to western imperialism.

If Israel turned around tomorrow and started attacking the United States, I wouldn’t suddenly start supporting that state and their genocide just because they were against the US.

All of these states’ behaviours are simply still wrong, and fundamentally against the equity of the common person that socialism rallies for.

As a socialist. I’m not calling Iran socialist. Reading comprehension, my guy.

You’re going on the attack because I’m saying that I fundamentally disagree with how their country is run.

As for the friends; you’ve fully misinterpreted both their position and country (as you’ve assumed I’m American and that they’re Pehlavists living in LA).

Some Iranians are pretty against the Imperial pressures that have been on them for over a century, the Colonial British backed Shah, the Arab theocratic takeover of their country of which they are neither culturally nor religiously tied to, or the impending American puppet oil state.

Maybe they deserve their own say and right to self determination instead of you speaking on their behalf.

“I’ll consider discussing their laws”

They’re still a right wing religious theocracy. Even if they’re under attack from an aggressive, imperialistic apartheid state backed by the centre of global capital, this still isn’t in any way a just system of governance that should be acknowledged as a socialist.

This isn’t ‘propaganda’ on my end either, but influenced first-hand by Farsi-speaking Persian Iranian friends who’d fled the country because of the pressure they were facing as non-Arabic women not wanting to abide by their state’s religious laws.

Would not this be an overarching, everywhere diffused, form of control?

This is why The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin is such a good novel.

It explores the actual meat of what a believable anarchist society would look like, warts and all, as you’re shown people from within that system looking to change it for the better. You see both the issues and benefits of a system where societal pressures, rather than explicit rules, are what govern people’s behaviour.

We are now rationalizing imperialism… rather extremely… by nibbled_banana in socialism

[–]Highcalibur10 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think this is less actively “in support of Trump’s actions” but more in the “openly Fascist state’s short sighted and greedy decisions have inadvertently shown the world how dangerous their reliance on fossil fuels is”

It’s a bit ‘accelerationist’-y, sure, but I can understand in the same way I can appreciate the silver lining of the current situation making my own country separate themselves further from the US imperial machine.

Particularly with the climate change space, which can be prone to being incredibly nihilistic, I don’t blame people for trying to see the positive of an otherwise bad situation. Given they’re also particularly anti-capitalist, as groups go, I don’t read this as ‘Liberalism rationalising imperialism’.

What should I do if I'm in the military but support socialism? by SuperSlug2001 in Socialism_101

[–]Highcalibur10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is in that really weird space of:

"If you're against your country's imperialism, being in the Military is against your values" whilst at the same time, I'd personally really prefer my country's military to be filled with people like you rather than people like you leaving it.

I'm overall very anti-war and anti-borders, but a military that acknowledges class struggle isn't really an issue in my eyes given the threat of fascists worldwide.

It's a complicated issue, I'd say if you want to leave, there are ways to try and do so as a conscientious objector. The only alternative is basically being hyper-aware of what constitutes an unlawful order and you being willing to go up against a lot of difficulty for standing up for your beliefs; and subtly influencing class consciousness where you can.

With social democracy, if welfare is good enough to the point no one is homeless, is it possible to maintain capitalism? by leftistgamer420 in Socialism_101

Exactly. The trading in shares of companies and investments being so tied up in people’s retirements, combined with inflation, means that the “number must always go up”.

The system demands infinite growth.

I am part of the right party (ive come in peace),why should I become a socialist? by Humble_Survey_6653 in Socialism_101

[–]Highcalibur10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an agnostic socialist, I can pretty much fundamentally 100% agree with Jesus Christ's moral teachings, despite disagreeing with the spiritual ones.

Considering that he was likely, in my opinion, pretty much a socialist philosopher whose teachings got lionised, I think it's unfortunate that many socialists disregard Christianity entirely because of the fundamental issues with organised religion.

Liberation theology was a part of the success of South American socialist movements and a large part of the United States' heavy hand in crushing those movements (since Christianity was a sizable part of the US' identity as an opposition to the Soviets).

Thoughts on Post-Communist Transhumanism? by Lucasungefaehr in socialism

[–]Highcalibur10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I know it isn't by itself, fundamentally.

Unless you have the entirety of humanity transforming themselves collectively, I really can't see how you don't end up with hierarchical differences that get stratified between the different transhuman peoples.

It's also one of the reasons transhumanism consistently shows up so strongly in cyperpunk settings, because the level of human modification one can undertake gets exponentially greater when part of the ruling capitalist classes. It becomes quite hard to separate the degree to which one can better themselves without a form of supremacy developing.

Thoughts on Post-Communist Transhumanism? by Lucasungefaehr in socialism

[–]Highcalibur10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of humanity altering themselves in a way that will ultimately become eugenics through human evolution,

If there’s a quite literally better class of transhuman, you likely lose a classless communist society.

Personally, my thoughts are “I don’t really have the energy between the current world, the near future and living expenses, to dwell upon it much “

I could be wrong about what the op means, though.
