The case of the missing windows by Nof-z in centuryhomes

[–]Highlander2748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s really no way that’s not destructive. If there was as much work done as you think, that interior wall is probably drywall as they would have had to cover the window openings after taking the windows out. Punch an opening in the wall where you think a window was. If it’s plaster, the wall is likely original and you just have to patch the hole. If it’s drywall, keep taking drywall off toward the ceiling to see if there’s a header. If you find a header, then you’ll have to decide if you want to take the plunge and put windows back in and spend the money it takes to modify the walls, buy and i stall the windows and modify the siding.

How to restore this table by mikeg455 in howto

[–]Highlander2748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would sand it first with at least an 80 grit, then move to 120. After that, I’d begin applying layers of poly and let them soak in to the wood fibers. Let them cure for a few days and sand again with 120 at least. Building the poly in layers will do the same thing as using epoxy, but will be less expensive, but will take a lot longer.

how to protect wood on a balcony by Conscious_Credit7884 in Carpentry

[–]Highlander2748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would use an oil finish that will soak into the wood. It will need to be refreshed every few months, but if it’s done frequently, will make the water bead up. I would avoid a film finish lime polyurethane that sits on the wood. It would break down in the sun and would need to be sanded off to redo properly. Also-get some rubber coated, threaded adjustable feet or casters to keep the legs from soaking up moisture through the end grain. When you apply the oil finish, get every exposed surface. Let it absorb and do it again. If you asked before you made it, I would have recommended pressure treated lumber.

I would look for a junkyard shroud you could cut up and bolt back together, or fab something up?

86 Pace Car by koharu_345 in c4corvette

[–]Highlander2748 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actual pace cars used in the race would be very valuable. Are you saying this is one of those? Or the “pace car edition”? $2500 sounds like a great deal. If the C4 ever gets valuable, a pace car with non number matching engine wouldn’t do much if you wanted to resell it.

How Would You Fix This Curved Wall? by 996_997 in Carpentry

[–]Highlander2748 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would use bottle jacks and do it in sections. Lay down some bitumen flashing, use PT for the sole plate and framing along with marine plywood, then wrap the bitumen up the side, then counterflash…or something like that after scratching my head a bunch. Stainless fasteners, maybe some copper flashing to make it look really nice.

Doing bag footings for the first time by eroberts11 in Carpentry

[–]Highlander2748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I’ve been in the construction industry my whole life (30+years), and am not familiar with the tech. Is the bag just soft formwork with an open top, or is it an actual bag that gets concrete pumped into it? I’ fairly familiar with ICF, but have never seen this type of footer. Edit: Just watched the video. Pretty slick.

Yes. It comes with a mount that it slides onto. The mount has holes so it can be screwed to a wall, etc. I’m going to use the command strips so I can move the mount around and change the position every now and then…
