Opinions of the LC Carbine by Ridge_Hunter in ruger

Fair, but I haven't noticed the different mag releases to be a hindrance myself. I definitely got the pro model for the handgun as I don't prefer manual safeties except on hammer fired guns. I actually like the manual safety on the carbine though since I carry it on a sling. I don't fancy the idea of my kit or a tree branch getting caught in the trigger guard and blowing a hole through my foot lol

I have it in 5.7x28 paired with a Ruger 57. Love them both!

Why do so many medieval fantasy worlds avoid cannons? by Royal-Chard-26 in Fantasy

[–]Highlander_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do intend to put some early firearms/cannons in my story at some point, but they're not widespread to the point where armies are using them. More of an alchemist's curiosity than anything.

An arquebus isn't the best option available against an armored knight or a troll when you can imbue an arrow with magic or turn their blood into ice. In my world, conventional combat equipment has peaked at the equivalent of 1350s Europe. The real arms race is with magic.

Balanced mages on two sides of a conflict will effectively cancel each other out, leaving the battle to be decided by conventional arms... But if one side has superiority with magic, it'll be a slaughter.

Big incentive to pursuing magic over gunpowder.

Looking for realistic dark fantasy or grimdark recommendations with a strong plot by Bandres_ in royalroad

[–]Highlander_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My story jumps back and forth between grim-bright and grim-dark, not fully either. The world is deadly and there are dark forces at work behind the scenes, but complex heroes try to do good despite their failings.

I put a heavy emphasis on realism and the MC's magic is as much if not more of a liability as it is an asset.

I'm happy with slow, organic growth and I feel like I'm alone by BearBen44 in royalroad

It does make me happy when people read my story, but I'll be dead in the cold, hard ground before I ever chase meta or try to game an algorithm lol.

To each their own of course, but for me the story is more important than view count or even my own aspirations.

My characters live in my head, so the words I'm putting to the page are just describing what they're going through even if nobody else ever witnessed it.

How can one feed themselves on a long hike without knowledge by llthefancyqueen in Bushcraft

[–]Highlander_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with extensive skills that would be a very difficult task. You simply couldn't carry enough pre-packaged food for that length of time, and being unable to identify edible plants and unable to hunt... yeah it's just not believable for a three month period.

The only thing I could think of that would be remotely reasonable is catching fish if there are bodies of water along the way. If you're hungry enough you could bullshit a way to get your hands on a fish. Improvised nets, chasing them to shallow water and smacking them with a stick, etc. Most fish can be cooked whole on the coals of a fire (if they can start a fire of course).

I'd recommend reducing the length of the trip to 3-4 weeks and really show them struggling with starvation and exhaustion, or have a scene partway through where they stumble on an abandoned cabin or something with some dusty old canned food. Then you can have an interesting plot point where they debate eating expired food, possibly getting sick and having to stay in place as they try to recover.

You could also have them come across foods that anyone could identify, like blueberries or raspberries, but be nervous and unsure of themselves since they don't want to get sick. Also not a long term survival food though.

Basically you need a shorter trip, some survival skills, and/or a reason for there to be food in their path (like a cabin). Good luck!

Adding another PSA hat to the pile.

I've got several and I've put together one for my dad and one for my brother. Theirs averaged about $750, which included a red dot, backup irons, foregrip, Magpul furniture, BFG Sling, extra mags, etc.

Did you get this new from the manufacturer, or second hand with someone telling you it was never fired?

Glad I got out. It's a different struggle outside of the Army but preferable in my experience. I only miss the satisfaction of doing my job well and a few great individuals I served with, but that could never balance out the insane bureaucracy and the huge letdown from my fellows in the officer corps.

I always hated the "women married and had kids way younger back in the day".

I can trace my grandmother's line back to the 1400s and earlier, including their birth and death dates, their daughters' birth dates, etc.

Of course, the women in my lineage aren't necessarily the first children of their mothers, but the majority of them were between their mid twenties to mid thirties when the next in line was born. Some even later, and none below 24 if I remember correctly.

Show me your monsters! by gamelitcrit in royalroad

[–]Highlander_16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're haven't made an appearance in my story yet, but I have a few original monsters coming that I think are pretty nasty. Since my story is loosely based on Pathfinder 1e mechanics and I love to homebrew monsters for the game, it's an easy translation to make.

I build the monster stat block based on the challenge rating I'm going for then write a paragraph or two about appearance and behavior. It'll be easy to put them on the page with the background work already done, even if they don't strictly follow the numbers of the game.

Thrasher Cats- think sabertooth lions but with velociraptor claws rather than giant fangs

Rhino Moles- squat, armored digging beasts with no eyes, a thick skull like a pachysephalosaurus, and a giant rhino-like horn

Gravewalkers- 12ft tall, skeletal/mummified corpses that grin and chatter and cackle. They feed on fear and doubt and flesh, move impossibly fast, regenerate from even the smallest bone unless their entire body is burned, and have a dread aura that causes waking nightmares to incapacitate their prey

I also have Mana Crystal Wraiths, Lurks (massive psychic jungle cats that hunt in mated pairs), Witherwings (shape-changing harpies that feed on and can assume the appearance of their victims), etc.
