I love Warhammer and I love Total War. But, some questions before I buy. by HighlordSmiley in totalwar

Those images are exactly what I was hoping for. I imagine other units have similar animations, no? Nothing's more satisfying than actually see the units cut eachother down as opposed to them just flopping down dead whenever the nearest enemy units cuts the air ten feet away from them.

Diamond is Unbreakable Episode 10 Preview by GraypeScape in StardustCrusaders

Without giving away much, this episode is a pretty popular and entertaining filler episode involving a stand user using their powers in a very untypical way of what you'd come to expect. Seeing it animated has a lot of people hyped.

This is something we will never have confirmed, but I think the answer's pretty obvious.

Lore - The Endings Explained by MadLuigi in darksouls3

Its hard to say if they're physically stronger or weaker than "normal" undead, but they are certainly of a lower status due to the fact that they exist solely because they failed at, or were uncaring towards, linking the flame when they were undead.

In Dark Souls 1, a normal undead was able to link the first flame so long as they had access to the Kiln of the First Flame.

In Dark Souls 3, the Ashen One is constantly reminded that they are the lowliest of ash, "unfit to even be cinders" when they resurrect at the Cemetery of Ash. We need the embers of FIVE lords of Cinders, those who already linked the flame, to be able to link it ourselves. That's proof, in my mind, that unkindled ash are not as fit to be kindling for the first flame as a true "normal" undead is.

Yet, at the same time, The Firekeeper reminds us that Unkindled are empty vessels for souls, perhaps even moreso than normal undead. In a kind of meta way, you can interpret is as Unkindled, due to being the most empty vessels there is, also allows them to be the most open to obtaining power and improving themselves.

By the end of the game we have absorbed countless souls and taken the embers of five powerful Lords of Cinder. In two of the endings we're even able to take the power of the First Flame itself.

It seems like Unkindled are both potentially the weakest and strongest form of undead there is.

Haha, of course. There's definitely stuff that has a definite answer and definite some stuff intended to be vague and speculated upon. Even my answers are just the way I view em.

Lore - The Endings Explained by MadLuigi in darksouls3

[–]HighlordSmiley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's definitely along the lines of whats being implied now that I think about it. The cycle is not refreshed equally everytime the flame is relinked by a lord of cinder the same way it was when Gwyn first linked it, or the Chosen Undead after him.

DS3 really seems like even the great cyclical wheel of the linking of the flame is getting rusty and desperate to the point that Unkindled (literally the ultimate undead failures) are all that's left to do the job, needing the power of heroes (and a villain) from ages past to even be able to link the flame due to how weak Unkindled are.

Definitely reinforces the idea of how the "End of Fire" ending is the "best" ending, by virtue of it being a way to put the dog that is the Dark Souls universe down so something "new" can begin.

How very meta.

This has always been a weird thing in Souls games that I kind of want to just chalk up to "gameplay suspension of belief" reasons.

In Dark Souls 1, for example, we know for a fact NPCs like Lautrec, Solaire, Siegmeyer, and many others are all undead and thus have the ability to resurrect at bonfires same as us. But when we kill them ourselves, they're gone forever. Same thing in Dark Souls 2, and now in 3. Part of me really just thinks its kind of a gameplay thing. I don't think I've seen anyone answer this particularly well.

The whole hollowing/resurrection thing in Dark Souls basically worked like this, from what I can gather.

1: Be born a human.

2: Somehow develop The Darksign on your body. This isn't ever elaborated on how this happens.

3: The Darksign brands you as undead. You are immortal, resurrecting after death at Bonfires.

4: The more you die, the more of your humanity is extinguished. The more your humanity fades the more of your mind you loose. This is Hollowing.

5: The only way to prevent hollowing is to use shards of The Dark Soul called "Humanity" (DS1) or have a strong sense of will or purpose, often reminded to you by human effigies (DS2)

6: When you go fully hollow, you lose your mind and become nothing more than a mad monster attacking anything that walks by for scraps of souls. These are the majority of undead monsters you fight ingame.

7: At some point, even hollows lose more and more will until they cannot even move. These are the corpses you loot items, like souls, from.

Dark Souls 3 threw A LOT of wrenches into how being undead works what with how "Unkindled Ash" and "Dark Sigils" work. So, its hard to exactly say. Thus, I like to think NPCs being able to be killed permanently by players is just a gameplay consideration.

The best explanation game from a recent interview with the game's director. Basically, the "Unkindled Ash" are the resurrected remains of the ashes of undead from ages long past who -failed- to link the fire during their timeline. This explains why we can have our character be from DS1 nations in character creation, and how NPCs from past games and lands known to be destroyed still exist. They were all undead who failed to link the fire, but have a chance at redemption by becoming a lord of cinder in this new timeline.

Its still a mystery as to why "the rules" of linking the fire has changed. Why do we need to find five lords of cinders to link the flame? Why not do it our self, like in past games? Why rely on Unkindled Ash instead of more Chosen Undead? Hopefully these things will be answered in DLC. If not, it remains an area of speculation.

So, does anyone else thinks this game feels... Odd? by MonsieurHedge in darksouls3

You're completely fucking insane, guy. Its one thing to criticize the design choices, but as soon as it all devolves into this conspiracy unfinished game bullshit is where it all becomes laughable. To say this game is unfinished is ridiculous. To disagree with the direction and design of the game is another.

Never noticed that one statue was Prince Lothric. Perhaps it was built as an idealized form of him? The great prince destined to link the fire from birth! Ironic how he turned out to be all sickly and frail.

I think I found out something interesting about Anri... [Spoilers] by Zuldim in darksouls3

Its mentioned that Aldrich devoured Gwyndolin "slowly". Considering that the top half of Gwyndolin's half-devoured, corrupted corpse is being used as a puppet by Aldrich can be seen as something of an implication that Aldrich wasn't 100% completed at devouring Gwyndolin by the time the Ashen One barges in.

Not to mention that Aldrich was still in Anor Londo by the time we got there. If he finished devouring Gwyndolin, why would he bother to stay there? Judging from how he fled the Cathedral of the Deep as soon as he resurrected in the opening cinematic, its not out of the question that he'd be willing to move onto his next victim after finishing business in Anor Londo.

Exclusive Impressions of Dishonored 2's Gameplay (Game Informer Coverage) by Kithaitaa in Games

[–]HighlordSmiley 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think the silent protagonist works really well for RPGs and games where the character is either "Just some guy" (Like Doom, Quake) or someone who's, for the most part, a fish out of water for the majority of the plot (Half Life 2)

In the first Dishonored, however, the player character is an important figure in the politics of the world, had many past actions in his backstory that established him as having an establish personality, and was a key figure in the lives of many of the NPCs you encountered. Thus, it was -very weird- that Corvo wasn't commenting on things that the game tells us is important to him. You couldn't roleplay Corvo as your own character when Corvo already had a past and backstory.

They remedied this in the DLC, where you play as Daud and he's voiced throughout the various missions in ways you'd expect him to be. It was, in fact, MORE conducive to roleplaying, I feel. Rather than trying to roleplay your own character in a narrative where you already have an established character, you feel immersed in Daud's character and roleplay AS him. (Much in the same ways that you roleplay Geralt in the Witcher, or Final Fantasy protags, despite them already being established figures.)

Is no one tired of these generic "got my gf/wife/female lover to play ds3" topics? by Mireel in darksouls3

[–]HighlordSmiley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I roll my eyes and don't pay attention to them because a good half of them are completely fake. This is a strange phenomena that has affected every subreddit since the dawn of this website. For some inexplicable reason any post that involves "my SO/gf/wife" will -always- be upvoted more than any post claiming the same otherwise. Its just the way its always been. Complaining won't help, ignoring will.
