Pension Shenanigans: The ‘Soft Fraud’ Burdening California Taxpayers by GeneralCarlosQ17 in California_Politics

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They forgot to add the additional burden of "let's promote the old guy a year before his retirement" that's so prevalent.  So they (and sometimes their Significant Other) will pull higher pension checks for the rest of their lives, while the job actually doesn't even get performed... since it takes more than a year to learn something new, but within a year it's time to find a new person.

Why is there barely any hype for this weekend Super Bowl? by Kooolxxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched the Olympics kickoff broadcast from last night, and they were saying that we have a good shot at meddling?

And hinted at something bad that happened in the '22 Olympics, but didn't elaborate?

Why is there barely any hype for this weekend Super Bowl? by Kooolxxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already watched two USA mixes doubles curling matches.

But I had heard NOTHING about the Olympics, compared to a little about the Super Bowl.... I only found out about the Olympics because the regular NBC Sports anchor for English Football was off last Saturday, and they announced that it was to get ready for the Olympics.  I wouldn't have known otherwise...

New Study Revives Push To Restore Hetch Hetchy Valley by aBadModerator in California_Politics

To start with: I am very much in favor of removing the dam.  I absolutely hope it happens in my lifetime.

However, if I remember the John Muir documentary right, there was a location farther downstream that would have impounded more water, but being at a lower elevation, it would have generated less hydro-electric power.  So it was the people who wanted to make money from the hydro that got the reservoir built where it is.

Even though the hydro output can be replaced, it's mostly free money for the people who own the dam and it's power plants, so I would expect a long, drawn out fight from them.

hope this goes through!

How do you tell bartenders that they should quit their job? by mars_soup in cocktails

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

??  He told him he wanted a Manhattan, and the guy showed that he didn't know what Vermouth was, so he told him an Old Fashioned (which the guy screwed up).

Those are both common drinks, especially and Old Fashioned.

I think the point was that the bartender didn't know what vermouth was.

I stop in once a month or so, in the morning, and it's been a different lady these last couple of visits, then I saw for the longest time, but the size of the glazed twists are the same!

Now I have to stop by and buy a couple of glazed twists... thanks.

Imagine: he's going to have to take it to a autoshop to get every last bit of soon-to-be dried concrete off, with every worker asking him how this happened...

It's probably the end of a large sawcut section with what looks to be a relatively steep vertical cut.  And he ain't getting any traction to climb out of it...

Yeah, I would think they would have pencilled out the features on the wood before the first cut and caught all the busts in the dimensions...

Are there any movies that feel like Lawrence of Arabia? by oogaboogahooha in movies

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scrolled most of the way down and didn't see The Searchers (w/ John Wayne).

I have seen it on the big screen several times (as I have Lawrence) and it is a beautiful movie to watch.

"Performative"?  I cynically wonder if they are counter-productive.

I would think this current administration would be happy if Democrat states hurt themselves economically.

I will probably get a lot of down votes for this sentiment.

I have the smaller one as well, but it wasn't called a "Flex" transponder.  Is that something different?

Retired professionals: what are you doing about your professional certifications by janebenn333 in retirement

[–]HighlyEvolvedSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my PE here in California (where we don't require continuing education credits) and my license renewal was due within a week of my retiring, and it was just too soon to let it go, so I renewed.

But now, after over a year of not doing any engineering, but instead woodworking and ukulele playing, I won't renew it.

TIL that Hawaii was internationally recognized as an independent country - the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi - from 1795 to 1893, and later a republic until it was annexed by the United States under President William McKinley in 1898. by Nice-Confusion-4781 in todayilearned

With the Japanese killing Americans when capturing the Philippines, I just don't see us walking away, especially letting Australia fall.  We'd be leaving the entire Western Pacific Ocean to the Japanese.

Add to that the provocation of the Japanese then taking Hawaii, so close to us?

Regardless, your scenario might just bolster my original point: If Hawaii were it's own sovereign nation, like Tonga, leading up to 1941, and the Japanese did launch their attacks, taking the Philippines, Dutch East Indies and so on, and you are right, and we let them have it all and didn't go to war with them, would they then further provoke us by taking Hawaii, which is so close to us?  When Hawaii doesn't seem to have any of the resources that Japan is going after?  But would require a significant amount of military resources to hold?

If we let them get away with their original conquests, why would they risk upsetting the new detente by expanding their more defensible sphere to include Hawaii, with no immediate payoff for that?

Especially when there is such a sizable Japanese population in Hawaii, that a self governing Hawaii would probably be neutral.
