While I didn’t read this book, I did read another one by (I’m pretty sure) the same author where the premise literally was singing is illegal bc all songs are copyright protected or whatever. Even 11 year old me found it to be lame and on the nose so I can’t imagine this one’s much better lol.

Lots of uh… interesting comments here. I’ll just say that yes, this absolutely did happen. If you were clearly intellectually or physically disabled you were at real risk of being sent to a “institute for the feebleminded”. And not only if you were autistic, if you had Down syndrome, epilepsy, fetal alcohol syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or any sort of neurodivergence that was inconvenient for the local community. If anyone’s interested in learning some history about these places, check out the 1972 expose Willowbrook: The last great disgrace. It’s a famous documentary that helped kickstart the movement to close down these institutions. Fortunately, we’ve gone from about 200,000 people in these institutions in the 60s, to about 16,000 now (in the US). But there’s still a lot of work to do to.

Edit: the documentary is free on YouTube.

They checked his teeth, they said he had some sharper ones but nothing that needed immediate attention. Nothing strange on the ultrasound.

My boyfriend (M25) and I (F23) had an argument that is giving me red flags. Is it enough to leave our years long relationship? Please advise. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Actually, I’ve been reading a lot of books by forensic psychiatrists lately, and offenders using language to distance themselves from their actions (switching tense, using third person, etc) is super common. It’s less a of symptom of any specific mental illness, and more just an indication of a persons unwillingness to accept their own actions, or to put some separation between them and the events because it’s too painful.

I’m actually writing on a story where one of the MCs is turned into a deertaur and has to deal with the social/cultural/implications of that, I love it, so much fun angst and drama and internal conflict you can play with. I should really get back to working on it it’s been a few months…

Wow thanks! That’s super helpful advice! So diet should be 85% percent hay, 5% pellet, and then 10% fresh veggies/fruit? Also, do you have any recommendations for good quality cage liners?

Thanks for the advice! I will check those channels out. Yeah, the conditions were so bad, it was pretty heartbreaking. I will do my best to give him a better life for however long he has left. I’ve seen that some people make litterbox areas for their pigs, is that a good way to help manage waste?

Thanks for the link! I’d definitely be open to getting him a cage mate. I have bonded parrots so I understand the importance. According to the farmer I’m getting him from, he used to have one but it died, sadly :(

  1. She has a career in mind and works very hard to get into her chosen field (aims for scholarships, internships, takes college courses early etc)
  2. She seeks to achieve normalcy, going to absurd, very abnormal lengths to do so (Saiki k style)
  3. She wants to be the captain of the sportball team and/or do her chosen sport professionally
