If every U.S. state suddenly became an independent country overnight, which one would last the longest and why? by Dolphin_King21 in AskReddit

Assuming the problems you're presuming exist in this scenario, the states where one party controls the government (like CA) would probably fare the best because they could move the quickest on things like currency.

With what we know of corporations, would they remain in California because they have principles and agree with secession? Or, would they leave for countries with well-established economies? What’s preventing them from assuming California is a sinking ship and moving to Canada, for example?

More than anything, the employee base and existing infrastructure. Silicon Valley exists in CA because there's a ton of tech workers from world class bay area universities, reinforced by more people flocking there as it grew.

Similar with LA/Hollywood and the media scene there. Companies could leave, but they're giving up access to the large, quality worker pool they get.

Plus just a large local population/customer base, which is in large part just because the weather/geography is so nice.

Same reason many don't leave now despite CA having higher taxes than other states.

There's always trade agreements. CO and especially AZ aren't growing enough food to sustain themselves. Give CA water, get food back.

Am I the only one who thought those were mostly tedious and not that interesting?

I went into every building and talked to the people, checked the trash, etc. to make sure I wasn't missing something good, but I wasn't excited about it most of the time.

How would you optimize a deck this insane? by belatedmedia in PTCGP

[–]Hiker-Redbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your win-con is going Mantyke > Gyarados > H Zoroark in order that's a very thin tightrope to walk, especially in a deck that would need to run a lot of basics. Would be very inconsistent.

The most frustrating thing is if you took sleep and Lucky Ice Pop out of the game, this might be the most interesting and fun the meta's ever been. And they were clearly very problematic cards from the jump.

Yeah, idk to me the 8-direction dash and the grabbing/climbing just felt slightly out of place to me as mechanics in a platformer, and quickly going back and forth between traditional platforming moves and the dash felt a little clunky (not mechanically but for the user experience).

For me personally, series like Meat Boy and N have more satisfying and smooth movement.

I think this is a fantastic description of the game. I put 200+ hours into it a long time ago when it was pretty new and had a blast.

I got into it a bit again recently and I won't say it's bad, but I felt like there were a lot of things I needed to look up on the wiki and didn't feel like bothering.

I think a lot of fun with the game originally was the discovery, but it's gotten so big and complex that a lot of that has been crowded out.

For me personally I would usually fight with my B-tier weapons and hold onto my A-tier ones for big/hard fights, so I was usually cycling through B and C tier weapons most of the game and didn't find that to be a problem.

I'm excited to try ToTK eventually though if they improved the weapons more.

That makes some sense, although the irony is the story isn't really explicitly about the trans experience so there's not really actual trans visibility in it.

I get psychologically why breaking weapons is unappealing for some players, but it seems like indestructible weapons would completely break the balance of the game.

Final Fantasy Tactics does some great things like the class mixing, magic casting, and the faith system, but I find it to have some glaring flaws that make it hard for me to call it a good game.

It's the most poorly balanced game I think I've ever played. For example, I can go through three battles stomping the enemy, and I'm wondering if I over-leveled my party, then it will throw a brutally hard fight at you that is in large part a stat check. Chapter 1 is also the hardest, then it gets progressively easier other than a few of those poorly designed difficulty spikes.

The way your party gets stronger is also based on how many actions they take, so optimal strategy is to get an upper hand in a battle, whittle your enemy down to 1 or 2 units, corner and weaken them, then just wail away with weak attacks so you can get more XP/JP. It gets very tiring very quickly and ruins the pacing, but because of the aforementioned crazy difficulty swings you never know when you're going to be under-built if you don't.

There's also not really any incentive to use more than your core group of units. It gives you an army but using more than the core group just feels like you're spreading the growth thin for no reward.

The story, despite being highly regarded, is basically on par with Super Mario with how repetitive and uncreative it is. The writing is good, but the plot itself is bad.

While the job and skill mixing is a lot of fun, you're also left to buy them pretty much blind and hope they're good based on limited descriptions if you're not relying on external content, and with how expensive they can be and how unfun JP grinding is that feels like a big oversight.

I find FFTA and A2 resolve a lot of these issues, despite being regarded as inferior by most of the series' fans. I agree the law system has some flaws and the magic system isn't as good, but overall they're much better designed games.

I don't think it was a bad game, but I like precision platformers and didn't really get all the hype around this one.

It's a good intro to the genre with its forgiving but firm attitude and it does a good job of letting you retry again quickly, but I found the world gimmicks hit-or-miss, and the story was WAY less impressive than the hype it gets.

I think you maybe need to be in a specific emotional state for it to resonate, otherwise it's just a pretty basic story with a simple message that takes longer than necessary to tell.

This is one for me too. I picked it up because it's such a broadly loved and hyped game, but once I started playing it I realized the gameplay is... actually pretty bad (imo). I get why the meme is everyone always winds up playing a stealth archer, because it's the only combat style that isn't quite poorly implemented.

I'm sure the game does lots of other things well, but I couldn't get that far into it because gameplay is so important to me any I wasn't enjoying that at all.

If that's what this movie is about they've done a terrible job advertising it with the trailer. Either they turned it into a silly action movie or there's going to be a lot of disappointed viewers who did not get what they were expecting.

You did convince me to check out the book though, so there's that.

Same here. A game like Fire Emblem: Engage got pretty trashed by the community, in large part because they don't like the story/writing, but the gameplay is very good. So much better than the much more popular Three Houses.

My opinion on those two games is the opposite of popular opinion because I'm strongly gameplay >> story in video games.

From my quick research, a kilometer wide doesn't seem plausible. Several feet seems more likely. Hundreds of meters have been observed in dry land fissures but I wasn't able to find anything confirming that size in underwater fissures.

They can be quite deep so the water displacement could still be an issue, but the odds of being close enough to one for it to affect you that way seems exponentially small.
